English Final Fantasy trailers bring dramatic news

FF Type 0 Marshal Grinch

I love JRPGs, but the translated voice actors are often horrible. You just need to play Final Fantasy X and listen to those awful voices and laughs to realize that localization isn’t always a smooth process for Japanese games. Luckily, it seems the latest Final Fantasies have some excellent voice talent on board.

First up, here is the trailer for Final Fantasy Type-0 HD that introduces the characters and their play styles all under the guise of a fake news program:

If you don’t have YouTube access, you can watch it here.

It’s nice to hear their voices and see what kind of localization we can expect when the game comes to the West. They are sounding pretty good and it’s great to get some insight into what the various characters can do. They seem to each fit into standard RPG roles, but it will be interesting to see what abilities or special approaches they use to make it fresh. It’s promising to be a whole new Final Fantasy for a new generation – let’s see if they can deliver.

Of course, the biggest marketing point for Type-0 is that those who pre-order will get the Final Fantasy XV demo code. FFXV also released something new in English – that trailer we’ve all seen. Sure, the trailer is a repeat, but it’s fantastic to hear what the characters will sound like – I’m happy with the voice acting thus far, although of course we will need to hear more before we’re sure it’s not going to include awful laughter or awkward inflections. (Here it is for the YouTube impaired)

Are you won over after hearing the English version, or will you be playing in the original Japanese with subtitles? How important are the voices to you, or is it all about the content rather than delivery?

Voice acting in both videos sounds good, looking forward to both.

Japanese with subtitles, Emotions aren’t carried over with the translation. Same with anime shows.

Uhm..maybe this is because I’m coming from The Last of us, and GTA V, but the voice acting kinda sucks. Its stiff and accents are a bit out of place. I think Jap with subtitles is going to be better, but I’m a lazy SOB, so will probably get the English version anyhow, first(ish) world problems

I remember during a FFXIII interview with the creators, the question “Will FFXIII have a Japanese dub option on the disc?”

The reply was laughter, “Why would you want that?”

It showed just how out of touch the East is with the West. At least the father of Final Fantasy included 7 languages in Lost Odyssey.

Who has watched both versions of Crouching Tiger Hiding Dragon? Without a doubt, the original language is more authentic to match the emotion of the scene.

Give me Japanese dubs or go home.

I could also be argued that the voices were only recorded over the trailers and dont necessarily indicate the quality of the voice acting in the final product.

Why listen to english or read a jrpg with english dubs when you an just learn the language and enjoy the best of both worlds, western and eastern.
