Epic is working on a new triple-A shooter

No dammit, I said a Triple A game!

What’s next for Epic games? Gears of War is pretty much a fond memory of chainsaw swords for the company, while they’ve focused on graphical engines and some zombie-slaying action. But don’t count them out of the shooter market just yet.

Speaking at Develop Conference in Brighton via Eurogamer, Epic founder Tim Sweeney confirmed that the company was prepping for a new projects that included their next shooter title. “We’re building several games at different scales,” Sweeney said.

We’re building Fortnite, a PC online game which is a fun, sort of Minecraft meets Left 4 Dead. It’s a 35-person team. It’s not aiming to beat Call of Duty in terms of graphics. It’s more of a Pixar art style and a limited project in scope, just aimed at fun as opposed to massive breakthroughs in scale.

We’re building a bigger, triple-A shooter project that hasn’t been announced yet.

And we’ve also internally started developing really tiny projects with two or three guys working together as a team for a few months in small scale game development.

I like this direction.  Epic pretty much defined big budget shooters with the Gears of War series on this generation of gaming, but seeing them go off in more imaginative (and literally colourful) directions? They need, as does the rest of the gaming industry.

Although that’s not to say that seeing a next-gen shooter from the company won’t be welcome either.

I think I played that game way too much. But it’s still installed, I just can’t bare to take it off.

My new co-op zombie game is Dead Island. Mostly just because four guys can stand around a zombie and kick at it.

It should come around again, most sale items get repeated at least once.

GOW Judgement was a piece of crap compared to GOW 1-3, but I personally would love to see a new GOW game on the next gen consoles, even another prequel would be cool, as long as they include Marcus and Dom Im happy!

I think a nice break from the series, and then a revisit would be better. Epic have the potential to innovate, and they grew fat and stale on GoW. Seeing them do something different, and defining the genre yet again would beat yet another Gears.

Seriously? That’s the one game they choose to compare against?

Thanks, had a good laugh now.

Have not heard much from Epic since the Chinese take over resulting in Cliffy B becoming the new David Jaffe.

Yawn! Epic hasn’t been epic since late 2006.

Where’s that lion of a developer that enthralled all with the first Gears of War? These guys need to dig deep to impress me now. Ever since Gears of War 2 and 3 (the latest one, GOW Judgement, I didn’t even bother with), I’m convinced they’re a one hit wonder. In other words, the Carl Douglas of the gaming world.

They don’t say it here but these new games will have Linux support. But Shooters aren’t really that interesting anymore, If you played one you’ve played them all pretty much.

The Indie guys are the only ones taking risks in actually making original things. AAA Games aren’t important anymore and focus on stale ‘it just works’ material. With all due respect, Indies are the future AAA companies for a future that doesn’t involve being a Microsoft wh*re.

That’s not to say they never made good games, in fact they did. But those days are long over. It’s time to move forward. You guys only eat-it-up because you don’t know any better, and looks like most of you still use Windows. Which says to me you don’t care about the NSA having back-door access to your system or Microsoft’s treasonous crimes against Americans. So, you deserve exactly what you get for being ignorant.
