Epic: Next Gen consoles like high-end PCs

We’ve been wondering about the capabilities of the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony for some time; based on their rumoured specs they appear to be little more than current mid-range PCs but, being dedicated hardware means you’re able to do more with it than comparative hardware in a PC environment. According to Epic’s Tim Sweeny next gen consoles will match high end PCs – and that’s got him excited.

We’re more enthusiastic now than ever about the future of high-end platforms," Sweeney told Edge. "What we’re doing on high-end PCs is going to be representative of the future consumer gaming experience and it’s going to be awesome," he added.

Many, including myself, don’t really believe that the next generation of consoles will offer a much more visual clout than the current gen – but apparently that’s not the case.

"It’s going to be a substantial leap over the current generation," he said.

Of course, the cynical bastard in me wonders if it’s not in Sweeny’s best interests to start hyping this next-gen business. Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 is arguably the most popular engine used in this generation’s games, and Epic’s biggest source of income. Of course they’d want people to be excited for the next gen, and the next generation of Unreal engine.

Here’s the Unreal Engine 4 at work. Let’s hope next gen games really do look like this.

That is why PC is waaay better than consoles in terms of technology. What you see on that reel has been possible on a PC for the past 4 years already. Not to mention that consoles of today can’t even handle the previous gen of the unreal engine properly

I think it’ll be more a case where they wont have to trim the game engines just to make console games run at 30fps anymore. That said I think the visual enhancement will be more than expected by most people.

In the future, there will be no more consoles, just different brands of PC’s with different peripherals and software and/or operating systems patented by different companies. Master Race domination 😛

“Master Race domination” is such an ugly phrase, I prefer “benevolent overlords.”

One cool thing about this next gen consoles is that they will be like a mid range PC. So you wont see so many console exclusive or one brand exclusive game anymore. Hopefully, this will be the end of the console exclusive games.

Yeah, I mean if that’s what the Unreal engine looks like on current-gen PC’s and future-gen consoles, then imagine what that engine would look like on a next-gen PC!

When i compare this tech demo with Square Enix Luminous Next-Gen tech demo, then it’s not that impressive at all.It does look good, but coming from epic i expected allot more. They are claimed to be the pioneers of Graphics Engines?

Dude, I wasn’t stating that it’s UE4. Read the original post. He said that he would expect better. So I simply showed a video whose graphics ARE better and showcases just what can be done even on an OLDER engine.

UE4 is still in early stages and if the Samaritan demo is what the UE3 can achieve then by logic (Which I thought people would actually use) it means that once the UE4 is utilised properly and refined that the graphics would be even better.

Please use some common sense. I didn’t state it’s the UE4. I just simply stated that it is something that looks a lot better. Even if it is older.

Sheesh. Burn a guy at the stake for showing what older tech is capable of. Well done you bloody troll

I’m not a fan of the Unreal engine (Bloom covers all), but I’ll admit… this looks damn impressive.
