 Unreal-Engine-3-Samaritan

Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein thinks that the next generation of consoles is going to need to push the limits on their hardware, and that they should look to computers for inspiration.

Back in March at the Game Developers Conference, Epic showcased a tech demo by the name of “Samaritan”, a short clip of what future games could like with the proper hardware behind it.

Now, in an interview with Eurogamer, Rein further explained the importance of PC gaming and the impact that it could have on the future of the industry. “We’re at the stage in the life of the consoles where the PC has shot by them in terms of capabilities. With the PC you can simulate the future – you can put enough hardware in a PC to show you what a future console will look like.”

“(Samaritan) was kind of our love letter to hardware manufacturers. The next-gen, we expect, will look like that. If you fast forward a year or two years that should be a fairly common gamers spec. We hope the console manufactures look at that and go, jeez, if we aim for that in our next consoles we’ll be competitive with what you’ll be able to do on a PC in a year, year and half from now. A reasonably priced PC – obviously you can do it on an expensive PC already.”

There’s been conflicting reports so far whether the two big guns in gaming, Microsoft and Sony, will be pushing for a console successor anytime soon, with both camps being vague about the subject. But if the next generation of consoles packs enough power to stand toe to toe with the best hardware on the PC market for several years, then maybe gaming can finally take the next step forward towards realistic games and finally bridge the uncanny valley.
