Eurogamer Face Off: Round 14 – Avert your eyes PS3 fans

Fanboy wars

So it’s that time again.. time for the PS3 fans to cringe and warm up their excuse making machine.

It’s the 14th Eurogamer console face off and with the current score being 13-0 to the Xbox 360 you have to wonder if the PS3 is ever going to come to the party? We were all promised that the PS3 would deliver like no other console on the graphical front and I am pleased to say that the PS3 has put in its best ever effort in Round 14… but still lost miserably.

Before commenting that Eurogamer are biased please check the full technical details that they have implemented in this analysis.

If you are interested in the full breakdown and dirty details then click through to the Eurogamer website to view their write up, if you just want to know who won and why then click through to see the simple summary.

Ah a sucker for punishment I see… okay let’s get straight into it.

Soul Calibur 4 (Xbox 360 is the winner)

“Soul Calibur IV is stressing Xbox 360 in ways Namco-Bandai has been unable or unwilling to match on the equivalent PlayStation 3 code” <—Ouch…

Kung Fu Panda (Xbox 360 is the winner)

“The only difference concerns the framerate. PlayStation 3 is locked to 30FPS, whereas the 360 code does its best to run at the more preferable, fulsome 60fps”… though the 360 does experience some screen tear but so does the PS3 version

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames (Xbox 360 is the winner)

Xbox 360 version has additional depth of field and an improved refresh rate…

Guitar Hero: Aerosmith (Xbox 360 is the winner)

It’s really appalling that anyone is actually the winner here, but apparently the 360 is actually miles ahead in the graphics department in Guitar Hero Aerosmith… are there even graphics in GH Aerosmith? How did the PS3 not manage to tie this game?

Beijing 2008: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games (Xbox 360 is the winner)

I’m starting to lose count here, again another sub quality PS3 port (58% on Metacritic) being soundly beaten by it’s 360 compatriot. “the PlayStation 3 rendition of the game looks a bit unfinished in comparison”

The Incredible Hulk (PS3 Takes it)

No that is not a typo, the PS3 actually takes this one and by the sound of it it takes it by quite a bit. Though it will be said that the only reason the PS3 version won this one is because the developers tried to do to much with the 360 version and dropped the ball in the end.

Facebreaker (360 sniffs it)

It was close and it seemed that it was finally decided that the 360 was the winner as the victims eye’s don’t reflect on the PS3 versions gloves… that’s about it.. Well that and some arb aliasing differences.

EA Sports Roundup  (Not sure… tie maybe?)

This time around they decided to review a bunch of EA Sports titles at once so it makes it a bit difficult to actually get a direct answer… But for one thing the PS3 versions have drastically improved since last year and are now compare very very well with 360 versions.

The only bad thing mentioned was the dodgy menu systems on the PS3 version as they kept on locking up while testing.. something which EA’s developers have confirmed as being a lack of memory on the PS3.

So that’s it… this round clearly goes to the 360 and what surprises me is that the PS3 has not been able to match the 360 yet… how is that possible?

    Eurogamer writes:
So the Xbox 360 version is tangibly superior, right? Wrong. Well, it’s not as superior as it could’ve been, that’s for sure. Right after rendering Xbox’s higher resolution image, Namco’s coders then scale it back down again to 720p! Neither version has any anti-aliasing effects but the idea in using the Xbox 360’s higher resolution is to downscale the larger image in order to smooth off edges and reduce ‘jagginess’. In theory, this should produce a smoother-looking game for Xbox 360 owners – but as you can see from the video, you have to wonder if the effort was really worth it

After reading the above I would have said that Soul Caliber 4 is equal on both consoles. Yes, the 360 is technically supurior, but what you see on screen is basically the same for both consoles.

Anyway, from a controller viewpoint I would prefer the PS3 version of SC4. For the rest of the games, I’ll get the Xbox version.

Come on Abe, surely by now you know not to compare exclusives
    with multi-plats. It’s just not fair. 😀 😉

I think a problem with multiplat is that the devs normally start out on 360 as it is a familiar development environment, coming from a DirectX and Windows development background, and then have to move to a ps3 conversion of the game which is quite different and they might not be up to the task to do a proper ps3 version.

yes the deiierance between dirext and opengl is just
what this is about. It is much easier to do certain graphical shading etc with directx vs opengl.

“Well, it’s not as superior as it could’ve been,”

In other words it should have been ever more superior but it was still superior so the point still goes to Xbox 360

I actually only got Uncharted, it really is as good as everyone says. So a game brought out last year is still better than anything the xbox has produced before or since

Not disagreeing with you there… it’s just that it doesn’t really count in this regard..

We are comparing cross platform games

Will disagree, that there is nothing better
on the xbox, yes uncharted is a good game, but
    i can;t remember that it sold 1 000 000 ps3 just because
    of it.

I just knew you were going to get technical (Since you are a 360 fanboy!)

In my books, I’d still go for the PS3 version, the 360 controller just doesn’t do it for me in fighting games.

So if you’d like to get technical:
    Controller +1 for PS3.
And although the loading times are overall a match, the PS3 pimps it in certain areas, +1 to the PS3.

    Enough said?

er way to go for attacking the man and not the point.

There is nothing technical about it, they said the 360 was graphically superior. That is all this comparison is about.

When it comes to which controller is better then things get a bit messy as it is purely opinion and cannot be compared.

Loading times can be compared but then the 360 side could just bring up the install point and even that one out.

I like the facts that Eurogamer post in regards to graphics comparison.

sales dont reflect the quality of the game.
I know this is all about cross platiform games,
my point is everytime you publish one of these its the usual doom and gloom for PS3. In reality, the difference in cross platform games is invisible to the “human” eye, so saying the PS3 is still struggling is a wrong when considering current exclusive titles.

er, not attacking you Lazy. (Or not trying to)

I agree, controller is purely opinion, and in my opinion the PS3 wins hands down for this type of game. (For FPS the 360 pad still reigns supreme.)

I’ve never seen Eurogamer diss installs, so that is also a matter of opinion. My opinion states that installs are good as long as it makes the games play better. +1 to PS3

The feeling I’m getting from Eurogamer is that they look at the entire package, not just the GFX. Nowhere in the article did they actually mention that they prefer the one version above the other, so in my book that is a draw.

I think that there probably are better games on xbox than Uncharted. Uncharted did not do anything new to the genre, but it (nearly) perfected it. But to say that it did not sell millions of consoles is far from the point.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were probably some of the best games I ever played, and they sure as well did not move consoles.

“saying the PS3 is still struggling is a wrong when considering current exclusive titles.”
Sure but considering the fact that 80% and more of the games on the PS3 are multiplatform, don’t you feel a bit dissapointed that the PS3 is only tagging along graphically on multiplats?
