Everyone is getting an Elite: Dangerous Steam code

Little over a month ago, the incredibly popular space sim that isn’t Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous, made its way onto Steam. This prompted an outcry from existing customers to have the ability to migrate their own copy of the game onto Steam’s library – which is far more convenient than having to remember to manually update a separate client. For a while, it seemed like these requests were being jettisoned into space and forgotten, but not for any longer.

Frontier Developments have confirmed that come the end of the month, any existing Elite: Dangerous customers will be able to claim a Steam key from the official website. This will allow you to migrate over to Steam, which should keep your game updated with little worry from you. It’s unclear how account migration will work, but let’s assume for now that Frontier is working on it.

“Thanks for your patience. We’ll soon offer Steam keys to anyone who bought Elite: Dangerous from our store.”

Aside from providing this service to fans, Frontier is still requesting that purchases of the game be made via their own website. This is primarily because Valve takes a cut from games sold on Steam, which don’t reach Frontier’s pockets. Either way you’re getting a Steam key now, so it’s up to you to decided who really deserves all your money.

“From May 28 you’ll be able to generate a Steam key from your account page, and we’ll have full instructions right here on the forums closer to the time.”

“Elite: Dangerous runs on Frontier’s servers, so we’ve been working with Valve to give you a way to seamlessly connect your Steam and existing Frontier accounts in a way that’s easy.”

It does seem a little unfair a request though, given that Valve and Frontier are both working together to get both versions of the game seamlessly working together. Still, at the very least, your OCD can be satisfied with another game added to your growing digital library. I look forward to never having to deal with the game’s own client ever again.

Also that is not the same as “Everyone”, as the title states. Title implies the game could be had for free.

There should be one game client and one game client only. If the public had to vote it would be Steam obviously. But that might not be fair to other companies.

Might not be fair? Interesting choice of words.
      Might. Not.
      Might.

Eishkom? Hellkom? Monopoly teaches you just how bad an idea it is to OWN everything. You basically become Satan. Without the cool gear. And without eternal life. And without a Kingdom. And without an ideological perspective to consume your waking moments.

So basically nothing like Satan. Forget I said anything. It’s Monday. Hi. LOOK A PONY!

I’m just waiting for Steam to forge the One Hat to Rule Them All. Since many Hats have been given to the Kings of Gamer Dwarves, Men, and Elves.

          Yeah. We’re screwed.

Clearly I took issue with “might”. I ran with it. Didn’t know that there was a whole bunch of crazy on the other side of that bridge.

i want something similar to Pidgin for IMs.

where you log in all your instant messengers (mxit, msn, skype and more recently whatsapp) into one client and have all your contacts in one place.

that is what I want from a game client. a client manager.
open up a single client, log in with origin, steam, blizzards thing & ubi-thingy and have all my games in one place.

My first though: “Free Elite: Dangerous Steam keys! Thank Oprah!”
My second thought: “A competition to win a Elite: Dangerous Steam key? Nice.”
