Evil Within is only 30fps on PC and no one should care

1 min read

Shock horror! The truth has been revealed and the upcoming Evil Within will only be able to hit 30 frames per second on the PC version which has ignited Internet gangs everywhere to spew hate at Bethesda.

But does it really matter?

The Evil Within is a tense survival horror game which places more emphasis on puzzles, tactics and thinking than it does on twitchy shooting and 30fps really is perfectly acceptable in virtually all game types of its ilk.  Maybe it’s because I’m coming from more of a console background and we are more used to 30 fps in games but the current uproar building on Neogaf and around social media says otherwise.

Personally I’m not into horror games because I’m a small minded child when it comes to scary things –  but this latest trailer from Bethesda really appeals to me. The puzzles and construction part of the game is definitely my thing.

Now this hasn’t yet been officially confirmed by Bethesda but the user who posted it is known for mainly getting these things right and he had the following to say, in his usual broken English:

PC TEW caped 30 fps, not dev internaly by TNGO.
xtnrnl wosrkshop.

It’s a strange world we live in when the master race’s version of the game is being outsourced to external developers while the console versions are being done in house. Publishers have been preferring console over PC for quite a while now and it seems the developers are now being forced the same way.

So PC gamers, are you going to avoid this on principle even though it looks awesome?

Correction, son: Console gamers are overall more gullible and more easy to handle, and it helps a lot that they lap up DLC (something that could only be “established” because of you mouthbreathers) than PC gamers “were” (what a pc gamer was in 99 is not the same a pc gamer is nowadays mind you).
All in all the overall mainstreaming and bastardizing of my favorite past-time can be tracked down very easily to the the begin of the last gens console-cycle.
I hope you are very proud of that, kid. It certainly sounds like it.

You mean you are stupid enough and uninformed enough to say that, son…
The magic word is “exclusive” these days, and what it means is publishers/Sony/Microsoft pay a very generous sum of money to specific studios so that their game only comes out for specific platforms. Which for some very shitty games is the only way to break even in the first place. It’s quick and safe money, which you wouldnt need if your game is actually quality to begin with. I mean do you really thing Bungie made MORE money by NOT releasing Destiny on PC? Like do you think they make more money by not making their product available to millions of people? The architecture is the same. No in the end they lose a lot of money but their publisher contract forces them to lose money.
And then you come in and tell me “see consoles is where the money is”. No son, you are just braindamaged.

Let’s take Remedy with Alan Wake for example:
            http://pc.mmgn.com/Articles/PC-Gamers-Saved-The-Alan-Wake-Franchise

Same happened recently with Crytek, Ryse: Son of Rome. Sales on the Xbox One were way too low to recoup the development costs. Since Crytek was in a financial struggle and big reorganisation the could ignore the “Xbox One exclusive contract” they had with Microsoft. Crytek released Ryse: Son of Rome for the PC to get more money.

Also most Indie developers are choosing for Steam (PC) as primary releasing platform.

Maybe percentage wise there is more pirating on the PC but that’s still a relatively small group. Also don’t forget that all Microsoft and Sony games have ~8 dollars on royalties. That’s also the reason why PC games are cheaper.

The advantages of PC gaming is that there are maneuvers to unlock and squeeze the game.
Probably someone will unlock the game to 60, such as Dead Rising 3, NFS Rivals and other games that were capped to 30FPS. Meanwhile, on consoles can’t say the same thing about it
If look at the current game, it does not look as a proper optimized game for consoles. The footage clearly shows some frame drops on PS3/Xbox in close environments and rooms, and I doubt it will look significantly better on PS4, which is also locked to 30. The game was developed with the hardware of past generation, not in mind for the current one, I don’t see the PC version getting the worst version of it, it is almost equally for every platform.

    What does it matter?

It’s a survival horror game, absolutely nowhere will this game require you to have double the amount of time to put in inputs or where a-little motion blur will kill anything.

60fps is good for fighters, racers, competitive FPS games. For action adventure titles or survival horror 30fps lends to a more realistic cinematic feel.

I think the bulk of people just rage about 60fps because that’s the in thing and they do not really have a clue what purpose 60fps serves.

    ——————————-

On that note for anyone who wants it higher why do people think this will be any different from other pc games that have be “capped at 30fps” and that cap can be broken by simply messing with some files?

Once again it’s the dregs of gaming society throwing a hissy fit over nothing.

Or maybe just because it’s a direct port, and the guys did not have the budget or time to start optimizing?

I prefer playing PC over console but a large portion of the pc gaming community imo needs to get their heads out their asses. PC went through a mother of a rough patch where it was devoid of many games because people were developing exclusively for console.

Now we are finally starting to get games across all the platforms and PC gamers are just raging because it’s not optimized for pc! Well what do people expect when the market is primarily console based, business caters to the majority not the minority.

        ———————

More important than if this game hits 60fps, the question should be will it maintain and solid and stable 30fps. A stable FPS is far more important imo than having a fast one.

End of the day people are still acting like brat’s over something that is hardly game breaking.

I play on console and pc.
Pc is my first preference though, because I know it has better hardware and theoretically it should be better. I got Watchdogs on pc for this exact reason. How disappointing.
I really believe the pc should not be restricted. Like I said elsewhere, If my pc can only handle 30fps so be it.
But if my pc can do 50, 60+ why MUST I run at 30fps?

I’m sorry, but while I love survival horror, 30 FPS makes me physically throw up now that I’m used to my 144hz screen. It physically makes me upchuck my lunch.

So I couldn’t play it, even if I wanted to.

Also, obviously there wasn’t much effort if they couldn’t do a fucking reasonable PC port.

I find the whole 30/60fps bitch fight idiotic, but if that badly mangled English is trying to say the game is capped at 30fps then that’s bullshit for PC – seriously. If it can handle more it should be allowed to. You’re not going to hurt someones feelings if someone who has a better PC than them has a higher frame rate – THAT’S WHAT WE EXPECT TO HAPPEN. No choice is for consoles, not PC – how about you let us decide if we want to play the game capped at 30fps for whatever BS reason you have, 60fps for more high-end rigs, or shock-horror fluctuating between them NOOOOOOOO!

No I didn’t insinuate that & I’m not denigrating consoles. What I said was choice is being taken away from a platform that’s capable of it. If I want to turn my character why shouldn’t it happen as smoothly as my PC is capable of doing it? It’s a technical limitation, not an aesthetic design choice. Some games have an option to cap your game at 30fps, you have a choice whether you want to or not. It’s like that horrible film grain effect in ME – I had the option for it, I tried it, I turned it off because I thought it looked crap.

I would assume it costs more to code a game to run at 60fps as it requires more art work? Not sure but if that is the case then I can understand why, if they didn’t want to do the extra work, it doesn’t run at 60fps.

            October 8, 2014 at 09:45

They’re using the id Tech 5 engine. I’m sure it can handle more than 30fps by default. And definitely not more art work – the textures don’t change. The fps changes how you perceive the game, not the game itself.

            “Cinematic feel”

            Get. Out.

There is nothing “cinematic” about 30 FPS, nor does it “feel” more cinematic. It feels “stuttery”, it feels jarring. It feels like garbage.

The hell are you talking about?

There is no design around frame rates.

60 FPS is better, objectively, in every single way. Period. You are a fucking moron if you think otherwise. you are OBJECTIVELY moron if you think otherwise. It’s like saying 144p is better than 4k sometimes.

Maybe the game is designed to be played at 30fps not 60fps which makes sense for a game of this genre, maybe it does not run well when or feel good at 60fps I don’t know with all that being said I guess they could have given you a choice at what you want to run at on would not have hurt anyone.

There is no such thing as a game being designed to be played at a certain frame rate.

Higher frame rate is OBJECTIVELY, and ALWAYS better. There is absolutely nothing lower frame rate does to warrant choosing it.

One thing I’ve learned is that people will rage on the internet over anything and everything. PC gamers who love horror games will buy this…. eventually….. on sale probably. Those who don’t like horror games wont. Those that rage over 30fps should stick to angry birds or facebook games because if they haven’t realized by now that a mod will fix it eventually they never will.

      Why limit it?
Because it’s a console port, poorly optimized for pc.

Maybe the studio who Bethesda outsourced it to doesn’t have the required skills to make it run smoothly at 60fps. There are so many different PC rigs out there that it can be hard to compensate for everyone whereas consoles are consoles.

But every PC doesn’t have to run at 60fps. We know that every one can’t & we don’t expect it too. That’s why we get min specs, recommended specs, etc – so we know what we can expect based on our hardware. Consoles don’t have to worry about it – just stick in the disc & play.

Dark Souls is a crap console port ;P I like the game, but damn it’s bad. Press red button to perform action…. BUT MY KB DOESN’T HAVE A RED BUTTON 🙁

This looks cool, I’m just annoyed that choice is taken away. It’s simple enough to have a check box “cap fps at 30”. Done. That’s not console port problem, that’s a dev problem.

So true. My question though is why lock it at all? If my pc can only handle 30fps so be it.
But if my pc can do 50, 60+ why MUST I run at 30fps?

Optimizing for PC rigs is ridiculously easy.

DirectX, AMD and Nvidia fronting up the other side (Mantle), and standardized industry policies, combined with weird console architecture, make it just as easy to develop for PC as it is to develop for consoles.

Outsourced the PC version. Outsourced the fucking PC version. WOW. But it sounds about right.

There used to be a time when developers could make money off PC gaming. Funny enough that before Steam developers could make money off PC gaming and after Steam, nope not anymore. And then people praise DRM.

Consoles is where the gamers are and where the money is at. Why is The Witcher 3 being released on PC and consoles at the same time because consoles is where CD Projekt is going to make the most money and the faster than PC.

So PC’s don’t deserve support from developers and that’s been true for many years now. Once you take DRM away and get more people buying PC games, only then can you expect love from developers. But I don’t expect that to happen anytime soon.

“Assassin’s Creed Dev Says Industry Is Dropping 60fps

While some fans lament over Assassin’s Creed Unity‘s 900p/30fps lock, Unity‘s World Level Design Director is taking the time to explain why 60fps is not only unnecessary, but also harmful to some video games. Nicolas Guérin believes the standard takes away from the cinematic experience, and sees the practice fading from the industry overall.

“At Ubisoft for a long time we wanted to push 60 fps. I don’t think it was a good idea because you don’t gain that much from 60 fps and it doesn’t look like the real thing,” Guérin told TechRadar. ”It’s a bit like The Hobbit movie, it looked really weird.”

“And in other games it’s the same – like the Rachet and Clank series [where it was dropped]. So I think collectively in the video game industry we’re dropping that standard because it’s hard to achieve, it’s twice as hard as 30fps, and its not really that great in terms of rendering quality of the picture and the image.”

Assassin’s Creed Unity is likely to perform on an outstanding level either way, but it would certainly be something to see the industry as a whole overturn beliefs that 60fps is the long-awaited, bright future of development. We’ll wait and see whether 60fps becomes an unwarranted feature rather than standard quality expectation.”

“Maybe it’s because I’m coming from more of a console background and we are more used to 30 fps in games…”

Yes, you are. 30 fps has been YOUR standard for a long time, getting used to the smoothness of a controller and the good-enough feedback it gives you.

Now I ask you: try to pull off a 360 in any shooter with a mouse at 30 fps. Does it look smooth? Do you see clearly? No! With a mouse you move faster than with a controller. So 60 fps IS required on PC.

Stop trying to defend the bullshit arguments of Ubisoft and Ready at Dawn about the “Cinematic experience”
FINE! 30 fps on your console. But locking the game on PC, that has far more horsepower and NEEDS the 60 fps experience, just makes this game an easy cashgrab, specially considering how poorly optimized it is!

If YOU come from the console scene trying to give arguments about PC gaming, YOU should just stay out of the way and let the REAL PC gamers handle this.

Gavin Mannion, with all due repect, shut up.
