Ex Infinity Ward Developers Creating Direct Halo Rival – Pachter

This week’s Pach-Attack show has Michael Pachter answering some questions and giving his professional opinion on FPS clones and the future of storage.

Towards the end of the video, Pachter makes a pretty bold prediction saying that he thinks that the ex-Infinity Ward folks over at the recently created Respawn Entertainment are working on a space-shooter.

Is Michael Pachter going to be proven wrong, or does he know something that we don’t? Let’s take a look at the possibilities.

Halo is huge. With the Call of Duty and Modern Warfare franchises consistently showing their brand power and popularity on PSN and Xbox Live, the Halo franchise has taken a bit of a back seat at times. Make no mistake though, because the amount of Halo players is still insane and with the upcoming release of Halo Reach, it’s only going to get even bigger.

The idea that Respawn may be making a space shooter has come up in conversations I have had in the recent past, and in many ways it does make sense. Respawn now has some amazing developers working for them, and with the talent that created the original Medal of Honor games as well as the Call of Duty and Modern Warfare franchises, these guys could pose a significant threat to Bungie should they put their best foot forward on a space shooter.

Not only will this threaten Bungie’s dominance, but may even pull a huge amount of players from the COD/MW games as well (let’s not forget that Killzone 3 is also on the way).

What you also need to remember, is that while Halo has a great big following, it’s still an Xbox 360 exclusive and while all of those PS3 fanboys may be telling you how much Halo sucks, they secretly wish that it was on the PS3 as well. Should Respawn release something as good, if not better than Halo and then release it on multiple platforms… well, let’s just say: $$$$$.

If they manage to find a perfect middle ground between the winning formulas from Halo and COD/MW, they may have a serious contender on the way. All of this, of course, is only based on a prediction from Michael Pachter, but it still does make a lot of sense.

Any interesting thoughts? Do you think Respawn are working on something completely different? Flap your yap in the comments.

Here’s the latest Pach-attack.

  1. Lets not forget about Insomniac fellas!! Resistance 3 will be huge if they go back to the basics of R1, create an epic story, and keep the huge battles of R2. I loved K2, but for me personally, K3 will be a must buy, but a game like R3 will be the one keeping me online for months. Games today, *cough* mw2, are so easy a noob can pick up a controller and go 2:1. Back in the day of Resistance you needed actual skill to dominate.
