It’s been quite a few years since we’ve had a game where players could fight against vicious Xenomorphs without having to worry about an intergalactic hunter crashing the party. Aliens: Colonial Marines is shaping up nicely so far, with the action blending a nice mix of adrenaline and pants-crappingly good moments of suspense.

But don’t think that this is a game where players can go over the top and just automatically Schwarzenegger their way out of danger.Aliens: Colonial Marines is a title, that while it will have scenes of intense action, will also be a game that leans more towards gritty realism, as Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford explains.

Speaking to the PS Blog, Pitchford explained that the footage shown so far focuses more on the action aspect of the game, and that what has been seen so far doesn’t focus on the difficulty and challenge of the atmosphere in the title, with even more focus being put towards finding the right moment to even show one of the nasty acid-blooded buggers.

“It’s been fun for us to dream up the presentations, but we’re not approaching it like no one knows what a Xenomorph looks like,” Pitchford said. “We do have some awesome new variants to reveal for the first time, so we try to get value out of those moments for the experience when you’re playing the game.”

Pitchford then went on to speak about the multiplayer as well, detailing how the development team was treating it as a “Big deal”, that is “Getting a huge amount of attention”. Pitchford explained that the Gearbox would soon be looking for an outside perspective on the work done so far towards the multiplayer aspect.

“Peer review and testing with customers is really important to us in the tuning process,” Pitchford said. Aliens Colonial Marines is one of those titles that is steadily beeping on my radar, as it looks set to be a title that finally does justice to the pulse-riflemen of the Earth Marine corps.

A tense atmosphere that could explode at any time into a free-for-all assault on a Xenomorph hive? Sign me up right now.
