Expect shortages when PlayStation VR arrives

The PlayStation VR is coming in October, at a very console-like price. In the US, it’ll retail for $399, which is substantially less than its competitors In the PC space. But just like those competitors, it seems that PlayStation VR will run in to supply issues.

They may not be related to manufacturing though. While Sony is going all in on VR, it seems they’re not exactly expecting it to set the world on fire just yet, so they’ll be pretty conservative with the manufacturing and retail, Sony’s Interactive entertainment’s Andrew House told CNBC.

And if the thing does sell well, expect there to be shortages.

“We have growing confidence that we’ll be supply constrained with this product, but we’ll do our very best to meet demand,” House said. “Virtual reality is a medium that’s in its infancy. With such a nascent, very new form of storytelling, it’s difficult to predict what user uptake is going to be.”

He added, “We’re obviously very excited about the overall future potential for virtual reality and we think it’s the right opportunity to start to build a market. But we need to keep reminding ourselves that you’re requiring a very different user engagement than we have seen previously. … The experiences we are delivering are truly transformative for gaming and that will inspire a certain audience. How large that audience is remains to be seen.”

We have no idea when, or at what price the PlayStation VR retail unit will sell when it does reach South Africa, but it’ll probably be along a little while later than it reaches our American chums.

Basically just playing it safe. The smart move. But also not over promising to their customers. Another smart move.

Also the fact that they partnering with games companies to make VR missions of already known games is clever, gonna be using that a lot at expos etc to give ppl a taste of what a great experience can be

I want one. I am such a sucker for gimmicks! But after watching some of the footage coming from E3, I am sold that it will be cool enough for me to fork out some cash.
