Fallout 4 started out as a Skyrim port

Bethesda have a certain way of making games. It’s a style that has made their various franchises (especially cut from the RPG cloth) so recognisable – from the way it’s structured down to the graphical quality players expect. So it’s stands to reason that creating a brand new entry into the Elder Scrolls or Fallout seems to spawn from the same, blank beginnings, right? Well, that’s sorted of what happened with Fallout 4.

Instead, it wasn’t structure that Bethesda was seeking. As Skyrim’s development started wrapping up, a team began on Fallout 4. Skyrim, of course, released at the tail end of the last console cycle, and Fallout 4 most definitely would be on new (and then unannounced) hardware. Instead of trying to shoot for a launch window on hardware as unpredictable as the Luck attribute in the game, Todd Howard and his team instead chose to start from familiar pastures.

So, at its earliest, Fallout 4 was actually a port for Skyrim on to the Xbox One – so that the developers could get to grips with the new hardware.

“The first thing we did was port Skyrim to Xbox One. (Brief pause)Don’t get your hopes up yet.”

So in a way, you could say that Skyrim was on its way to current-gen consoles at some point and time. And the “yet” at the end of Howard’s sentence suggests that the idea is not entirely off the table (if not exactly even on at this point). But it is intriguing how Bethesda approached this challenge – especially given the temptation to try and push Fallout 4 out as a launch title.

That didn’t happen, but we’ll get our hands on the post-apocalyptic sequel in less than a week.

They should just put a chicken in some random town and if you hurt it then everyone on the entire map wants to hunt you down and kill you.

You know what’s the funny thing… I’ve actually never done that myself. It’s just one of those things people on the internet are always going on about 😀

lol. 🙂 I never hurt chickens in Skyrim… But I did kick the heck out of one in Fable back in the day (What?! The game told me to! 😉 ).

Or in the first Crysis where they pretty much exploded into a cloud of feathers when caught in the crossfire of a gunfight.

Still haven’t played the first Crysis… Finished 2 and 3, but never got around to 1.

2 and 3 were both very bland games. I couldn’t get myself to finish 2 even. After I played the first the other two just felt so basic and watered down. They just didn’t have any atmosphere, though they did look great.

I would agree wrt 2 – I did find it quite meh… I didn’t finish it the first time. Only finished it just before 3 came out. But I quite enjoyed 3 – that bow was awesome! 🙂 Was my go-to weapon of choice.

Mmm. I don’t think I gave 3 the chance it deserved. After 2’s disappointment following one I just wasn’t excited enough about it to really get into it.

Well after TESO and that Elder Scrolls Legends idea they probably need to do something like port Skyrim to new gen just to get people to find Elder Scrolls interesting again.

I don’t know, I have played both Skyrim and Oblivion, and I am excited for Elder Scrolls Legends. I love the lore, and a cheapo card game related to the lore is really interesting to me because I haven’t really tried a virtual card game, and I imagine from what little they have said about the Legends idea that it will be heavily lore influenced.

… Still skeptical about this game. These types of games never really gripped me in the past as I hoped it would…

Only thing about this game I don’t like from what I have seen are the graphics they seem a bit outdated and maybe this is the reason why…It won’t make a difference to me personally as graphics are not everything! Game play and story is what really matters.

It’s Bethesda. It’s never ever been about graphics with them. It’s about content, freedom and cutomisation.

Agreed. Sure the mods did make Skyrim breathtaking on pc, but it was always the gameplay and the freedom that made it what it was. And, of course, the quirkiness at times 🙂

1 month after release someone will make a 4k texture mod and Fallout will look amazing.

Bethesda games and mods go hand in hand.

My little pleasure in Skyrim is to play as a Khajit and use my modded-in Sword of Omens from Thundercats. 😀 Such a pretty sword.

            Hahaha. That’s hilarious.
There’s a Dragonbone-Ebon-Steel armour set. It’s way prettier than that fugly dragonbone armour. That’s also a firm favourite of mine.
And, of course, the swords from Bleach. That ludicrously big Tensai Zangetsu looks so cool.

PC Skyrim heavily modded still looks beautiful so it is understandable.

Just sad that they would choose Xbone as the primary dev system instead of PC considering their roots.
