Fallout 76 players are taking their anger out on Fallout 1st subscribers

Players who have paid extra money to have access to a range of special features in Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic MMO are reportedly undergoing targeted griefing.

Fallout-76-private-worlds-1280x720

Last week, Bethesda announced a new “exciting” way to explore and experience the world of Fallout 76, the notoriously buggy and poorly received survival MMO set within the Fallout universe. Fallout 1st would allow players of Fallout 76 to pay a monthly rate of $12.99 (~R190) or $99.99 (~R1460.00) for a year, to gain access to a slew of features that many players have been requesting since the game launched at the end of 2018. The premium subscription model allowed paying players access to Private Worlds, an unlimited Scrapbox to store the piles of junk players pick up and a Survival Tent that functions as a mobile base. Turns out, in a twist that absolutely everyone saw coming, people utterly hated this move.

In fact, people hate the overcharged subscription model so much that they’re taking their anger out on those that have already bought into the program. In the game’s normal Adventure Mode, players have targeted Fallout 1st subscribers, designated by a specific symbol next to their in-game name, non-subscribers have begun to grief and harass those with access to the exclusive features that come with the subscription model. What was initially a game that was about rebuilding the world together has devolved in a “Yeet the Rich” situation as players speak out against those buying into the system.

As strange as it may sound, Fallout 76 now represents late-stage capitalism and unbalanced class structure in a really accurate way. Why waste time trying to save the world when it’s so much more fun to reignite the French Revolution, but this time with laser rifles and robots? That sounds cool as Hell, someone should make that game.

I’m trademarking that, don’t get any ideas.

While I agree with the sentiment, griefing other players is never the solution. It should be the company that gets griefed, not the victims.

And yes, anyone who bought that premium package is a victim.

That’s pretty much how I feel about it.

Find it kinda funny that targeted griefing is a terrible gaming crime… unless it’s directed at someone in a game you don’t care about, then it’s funny.

While I’m not defending it, it could be seen that those who have made the purchase are “part of the problem”.
That being that special little niche of fuckwits that actually coughs the money up for those paid for features, thereby supporting the corrupt AF company that implements them in the first place.

I guess one needs to understand how psychology and consumer manipulation works to understand that these people are in fact victims of a company creating an artificial problem that is solved by paying some more. Every single one of these customers is victim to Bethesda’s manipulations.

Not weak minded – human. And as you say, they’re being preyed upon by the company – therefore victims. Why are the victims being even further victimised by their peers?

Because humans are generally also terrible.
Like, someone keeps downvoting even the innocuous statements you make, very likely just because they didn’t like ONE thing you said.

          • Pariah

            October 28, 2019 at 21:18

That was why they removed it in the first place – downvoters were getting harassed. It’s fine the way it is.

          • HairyEwok

            October 28, 2019 at 22:37

So instead of having a concrete conversation and saying why he disliked about the comment, he can just go and downvote which then makes the person who comment wonder wtf did he say wrong. Yes i can see people getting harassed, but there’s also plenty of people who’ll be willing to have a conversation over the matter at hand.

          • Pariah

            October 28, 2019 at 23:08

Typically the people willing to have a conversation will actually have the conversation, without needing to be confronted about the downvote. 🙂

But then, the other side of the coin is also true – people could be saying horrible, negative stuff and get downvoted for their vitriol or false statements, and they see who did it, and then go on a witch-hunt against those people.

I sort of agree, but I guess as a long time EVE player I kind of am desensitised to regular griefing.

Like, this is emergent gameplay. And as long as the vitriol is kept to in game actions and people aren’t spouting the normal “I screwed your mom harder than Bethesda screwed you.” kinda of nonsense, this class warfare is pretty cool, no?

No, it’s not ok. People are actively ruining other people’s games out of either jealousy, or hate for the company’s actions. The targets of said griefing, as I said above, are often paying for the service to get away from griefing. This ruins their game, ruins their enjoyment, for something they’re paying for. The people out to grief would not want to be the targets of this themselves. And, I can already tell they’d say “so then stop paying and we’ll stop griefing”, but how does that actually solve the problem? It doesn’t. It’s just creating more problems to compound existing problems.

            October 28, 2019 at 21:18

The way I saw it, in error I admit, was that the griefing was a form of protest by targeting those supporting the shitty practices of the company.

Edit – but since the paying players have no real way to prevent/deal with the griefing. It does become a bullshit tactic, and the anger should be directed more towards the company.

Well, it could be seen as a way to protest, but instead, misguided, against the sub guys

          • Pariah

            October 28, 2019 at 21:28

In a vacuum that would be understandable. But the issue is that this support was garnered through consumer manipulation, and one of the reasons people might buy the premium subscription is to get away from the griefing. So when looking at it, one can’t assume that the subscribers are doing it to support the company, they may simply be trying to get some privacy in a franchise that, up until now, was a single player experience.

There are so many reasons one could be buying that sub, and only one of them, literally only 1, is worthy of grief. That is, if the person is buying it to “support this great company”. I wonder, how many of the subs do you think are doing it for that reason?

          • Jacques Van Zyl

            October 28, 2019 at 22:37

Yeah, and it is even more despicable that the players now end up not getting what they are paying for. I’ve had very much an up and down rollercoaster through the comments today, but ultimately Bethesda can suck a chode, and they players all should protest this in a more effective way than hating on each other.
