Fallout: New Vegas has a “comprehensive” patch incoming

Thank goodness! While patches for each of the three platforms have already been released, they only fixed a few of the immediate bugs. The patches didn’t squash all the bugs, however, and the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game are still a little shaky.

Alright, maybe they’re more than a little shaky, but still, the game is loads of fun especially when you’re not picking radscorpion stingers out of your face. Over on the Bethesda blog there’s an update on how things are progressing regarding this “comprehensive” patch.

The patch will be for all three platforms and the good news for Xbox 360 players is that the save game glitch will be remedied. According to Bethesda they are “currently running final testing and certification on a comprehensive patch for all three platforms (PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), so we’ll have something available in the coming weeks”.

“Coming weeks”? Damn, that’s a while off. There is other good news though, especially for PC players with NVIDIA hardware as an additional patch should go live next week that will fix performance issues. The PC save game issue (which I, thankfully, wasn’t even aware existed) and companion issues will also be addressed as well as some Havoc related bugs.

I’m chuffed there’s an NVIDIA fix coming; my framerate disappears the moment I have more than three NPCs on screen at once. It makes gunfights interesting to say the least.

  1. Some friends i chat with another forum asked me to post some impressions on my Fallout NV playthrough so i thought id post it here for you guys. I hope it helps when deciding whether to get this or not.

Fallout New Vegas on PS3 with about 80 hours of playtime and an 8/10 from me. Completed about 80 quests in total. I know i missed a couple and probably didnt find locations for tons more. This is a massive game and as big as Oblivion

    -LOVED:

    – The writing in this game was pretty good. Lots of black humour. Quite a few quests stick out in my mind as i type this. Some memorable characters also from this game.

    – The new guns. There were some particularly awesome guns and especially my favourite the RIOT GUN!!!

    – The game was more challenging than FO3 and better for it.

    – No wasted space. Almost everywhere in the world had a quest or something to do. No endless tunnels and empty buildings for filler like in FO3.

    – The brannching stories. So many options with so many implications. The evil or good scenario for games like Fable pale in comparison. So many shades of grey and implications in this game its not even funny. Absolutely brilliant.

    – Tons of replay value. For every branch you choose in the main storyline you lock out quests for another direction.

    – I enjoyed the vaults. They are like mini puzzles and some of them had very funny stories attached.

    – I loved the faction system. Its almost like playing diplomat in a war zone while choosing which allies provide you with the best rewards.

    – I loved the companion system because each companion had their own cool story and were a great help in some battles. Saved my ass plenty against the potent Deathclaws in this game. The AI for companions could use some work though.

    – The enemies. Every enemy in Fallout 3 started to feel like a template with another skin but New Vegas felt like each one was different and there were tons of new enemies with different tactics to face.

    Hated:

    – Animations could use work.

    – The radio stations dont have enough songs. Take a leaf out of Rockstars book Bethesda/Obsidian. What was there was great though and in particular Johnny guitar. I loved that song.

    – The ammo creation was convoluted and i found myself ignoring it. New ammo types like Armor piercing and hollow point rounds were really good though.

    – AI in this series really needs to improve.

    – Re-used art assets, music ( Not radio music ) and graphics from Fallout 3.

    – Some input lag and occasional unresponsivness when you try to activate VATS.

    – Technical problems with the PS3 console version including:

    (1) Constant freezing in certain hotspots.

    (2) Loading screens getting stuck

    (3) Entering an area only to have your frame rate crawl to one frame every 5 seconds. When you reload your save everything is better but its still annoying and it happened so often.

    (4) Every once in a while your screen goes black and the game takes you back to the XMB. Very annoying.

    (5) Some broken side quests.

    (6) I had one particularly annoying bug where three Khans i met earlier in the game kept pitching up and loading with my squad in every area i entered every once in a while in the game.

    (7) Every 20 seconds in the wasteland the screen pauses for a second or two and it gets real annoying.

    (8) Some terrible frame Rates in some areas.

The console versions should never have been released like this but New Vegas is such a great game and so addictive i pushed through it. Bethesda/Obsidian really need a new engine though and better quality control. Overall though i enjoyed this much more than Fallout 3.

Miklos, check out nexus, there are some fixes there from the modders that patch up the mouse acceleration, Driver issues and a whole bunch of other things. I ran it over the weekend and I cant tell you how much of a dif it made. Pitty that Im still battling with a lot of broken side quests.

I have played for around 12 hours now and have luckily not run into one bug yet, that I know of anyways. I did have the game freeze on me once though.

I am about 20 hours in had two freezes. The game is a bit glitchy but not enough to spoil it. Some of the stuff is quite funny.

Yeah i remember only experiencing i think 3 freezes in my first 15 to 20 hours but then when i got around to the east coast of the map and in particular the NCR camp Hope the freezing got terrible especially between the skirmishes of said camp and the Town of Nelson. My game froze on me and the frame rate crashed about 30 times there before i completed all my missions.

Certain hotspot areas have big problems but fortunately they are few and far between. This is from the PS3 version though.

I cant comment on the 360 version as i havent played it. Based on what ive read in the Bethesda forums for both versions before i made my purchase and before the first patch was released it wasnt going great on 360 either. People were reporting corrupted save problems ( Im talking all their save not just one ), some couldnt get into Vegas or enter towns, freezing, very low frame rates. Didital Foundry did a face off i think so you can go read that.

My Super Sledge dissappeared – I think maybe my companion was hitting those radscorpions a little tooo hard with it.

The bugs seem to pop up more and more as that save file increases in size. I remember mine started at abou 1MB and reach around 10MB when i finsihed up my paythrough. The first patch was supposed to fix tons of scripting issues about 200 if i remember but there were still plenty of quests that were broken and i couldnt complete. This new patch sounds a bit more comprehensive though so heres holding thumbs!!!
