Far Cry 2

I was just over at the PS3 forums and I saw a posting from one of the Admins saying that Far Cry 2 is going to required a 3.5Gb install…

You know this is my pet hate so there was no way I couldn’t post about it but really 3.5Gb is an insanely large install.

I will be very interested to see which version comes out looking and playing better seeing that the 360 version doesn’t require any install.

If anyone is wondering, no the admin is not a filthy pirate but rather he owns one of the better online retailers in South Africa and has more than likely just received his stock already.

    a very valid point…

So should the developers be putting more effort into getting the PS3 versions out first to avoid this piracy… Or do you think the pirates will crack the PS3 as soon as it’s worth their effort?

I’ve pre-ordered this game for the 360 and now I’m hoping someone hurries with a head-to-head so I know if I must change the format or not before friday. PS3 or 360… why is it so hard 😥

As soon as downloading 50gb of data becomes viable and BD writers are cheap there will be piracy.

I doubt FC2 is any bigger on the PS3 than the 360. That holds true for all multi P titles….

From what I have heard the reason for the installs is due to the slow read speed of the blue ray readers.

    Well that’s my 5c 🙂

Eh yeah probably. I wasn’t arguing about that. I was saying citing the size and bandwidth limitations as the reason PS3 games are not viable to crack yet is BS. The majority of games are multi-platform and I’m pretty sure a game like Far Cry 2 is similar in size for PC, 360 and PS3.

If I wanted to install I would have bought a gaming PC. Consoles never had installs.

If I want to play a game that I have not played for 6 months I just pop it in the console and it works.

So, PS3 guys gotta put up with installs and the possible cost of buying a decent sized laptop HDD to keep some games.

XBOX peeps (with Arcade/Core) are screwed on the 128MB install for NXE and will be sold alternative storage at a discount. (i.e it’s still going be expensive)

Right, i’m calling this a tie.

They are getting free 512mb units.
Or they can get 20 gig drives for $19.
    How is that expensive?

    Back to topic.
During my recent holiday, I rented Heavenly Sword.
Got home, giddy with gamefull joy, and popped it in.
Update needed. MMM, ok update. 100 mb later… (and 20 mins or so).

    Game needs to install… mmmm.

15 minutes later. Finished copying data, PS3 will now reboot and install… mmmm

Almost a hour later: I can now start playing the damn game.
and there where still load times, choppy frame rate issues, sound sync issues.

If they are forcing a 100 mb patch and a forced install, then at least make the damn game run flawlessly!

I would not then mind the install that much, but I still think it is BullSht that a R1500 (game special) Arcade console can run the same game, just as good or better, than a R4500 console, without having to have even a HDD.

Where is the love SONY? Where is the love?

Lazy please stop the fcuk complaining about installs. You haven’t even got a PS3, what’s the problem? You scared that it is going to happen to 360? I promise you that 720 is going to sport HUGE installs, optical drives can not compare with HDD with regards to speed and reliability.

BTW, I actually prefer installs now, because my 360 keeps on getting REGULAR read errors on my BRAND NEW Bioshock, COD4 and Forza discs. It is my 2nd 360 and it is 13 months old. There is NOTHING as frustrating as spending hours on a game just to have it crash because of an IDIOTIC read error.

Never, I will continue my one man campaign against the idiotic installs until the day I die…

Consoles games should never need to be installed.. unless they are downloaded entirely and there is no disc.

I hear you, and I felt the same. Unfortunately technology must advance and certain older technologies stand in the way of that. I’ve come to terms with that. Maybe you should too, instead of boring us week after week

ahh but consoles never had hard drives… it just so happens that xbox doesn’t not ship all consoles with hdd’s. when they do, and they will, xbox will also have mandatory installs.
anyway, whats 10-15 minutes out of your life to install?

That’s what I’ve been trying to say!

So I guess everybody that complains about the installs will buy a PC come next Gen! Good luck with that!

You do know that the update is not mandatory?
I mean, just don’t connect to the Network.
BTW, installs aren’t going to fix stuff like choppy framerate, sound sync issues etc. – that is crappy programming. It is supposed to improve load times, so that you can start the game quicker, or make textures load in faster.

All I care about is saving on wear and tear on the optical drive. You can just listen to an xbox starting a game to realise that the thing is going to take off any sec., you can hear the drive wearing itself out.

Not realy the pirates that comes up with the cracks mostly. It is the “hacker” kinds, the guys that likes a challenge and to break into something to see if they can. The pirates are the guys who benifits off it by making money when selling cracked games or games for cracked systems. Ofcourse some of these guys who did it for fun initially might be using their skills to make money off it now.

What I am trying to say is that they might are not doing it for the profits, the reason the PS3 is not cracked is not cause no-one cares to do it but rather cause its harder to do. And as some replies below, mostly the PS3 version is the same size as the 360 version of the game.

As always, I welcome the installs and was just saying to a mate of mine that I hope the PS3 version has an install.

Less wear and tear on my optical drive and faster load times. I’ll get over the initial 10 minute install.

Also, a 250gb drive in the PS3 helps.
