Far Cry 4 has women everywhere, “just like life”

Far-Cry-4-three

Ubisoft has been having a rough time lately with regards to their inclusion of women as playable characters in both Assassin’s Creed Unity and Far Cry 4. To be entirely honest, it wasn’t really about anything Ubisoft did particularly wrong, but rather just the way they chose to tell people about it. In essence, they like shooting themselves in the many feet they have.

So Far Cry 4 won’t have a playable female character, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any women in the game at all. In fact, Ubisoft is trying desperately hard to let us know that Far Cry 4 will have quite a few female characters. Again, their wording makes for some interesting statements.

In an recent interview, Far Cry 4 game director Alex Hutchinson explained that the sequel would feature many female characters on both sides of the moral scale. Just like life, apparently.

“We tried very hard to make sure of the four main antagonists, half of them are women, which is cool. On your side, one of the main leaders of the rebel faction is a woman, half the rebels that fight with you are women. It’s packed to the gills with women.”

I’m sorry Alex but I’m going to have to stop you there. Would you kindly like to explain to me, and everyone else reading, what the hell that last sentence means? Packed to the gills with women? Am I supposed to be thinking about fish?

Sorry I’m interrupting, you have more to say.

“They’re everywhere, just like life.”

Do you understand what I’m getting at now? It’s great that Ubisoft is trying to mend some of the bridges they scorched to the ground during E3, but they still have people making really weird and ridiculous statements for everyone to just tear apart. I almost can’t wait to hear what they have to say when the inevitable argument of “violence against women in Far Cry 4” gets brought up.

Bring popcorn. We can all act like that cute little monkey above.

So, I can already predict that “violence against women” is going to also have a hissy fit here. They want them as characters, but then when you have to kill said character or [insert violent scenario here] happens, there will be complaints as well.

    Its just a game ffs

You see, this is something we as humans do constantly, “I don’t have food for this week” and “I don’t have petrol for my Ferrari for a joyride” are two sentences that people justify as complaints, on the one hand you have someone in dire need of resources to live, where on the other hand you have someone that complains about something that they perceive to be the end all of everything… there is always a case of someone complaining about something, because human nature cannot be satisfied…

It’s all PR, I swear to god its all marketing. Games like Sunset Overdrive are now marketing how you CAN make a female character. Dragon Age introduces its FULLY gay character…Sex,race, sexual orientation and gender have now become features of a game.

    in 2020…
We’ll get Video game posters with quotes from major gaming websites stating:

    “It features women!” – IGN
“You can blow things up, and be gay”-Gamespot
    “5/10”-Polygon
“The MOST EMOTIONAL story you will ever experience with Asian characters”-Kotaku

Bioware has always been about character customization so I have to side with them on touting that particular aspect in almost all their games (ToR is an MMO so I sorta understand why it was toned down.)

I only really have a problem when it breaks out of the RPG genre and crosses over to say FPS. I don’t care if you play a chick in Far Cry cause its all about blowing stuff up and chewing bubblegum.

Well this whole topic is actually getting quite tiresome. I don’t go around telling a writer I want his book’s protagonist to be female/male, otherwise Ima throw a hissy fit. I don’t go around telling the dev’s of Tomb Raider, I want her to be male, or ima throw a hissy fit. Let the studio’s provide us with their artistic vision and let us just enjoy games for what they were meant to be – escapism.

Yea, but that’s reaching a bit. We all know there was a writers debacle at Bioware and EA pushed them for a release. Everything about ME3 was enjoyable, even Mordin’s bittersweet sacrifise (man tears were spilt) was enjoyable, but that ending just reeked of sloppiness. Anyway, that’s one topic to derail a thread.

Regarding this whole woman and gaming debacle, if there’s one person who’s actually doing the “cause” a disservice, it’s Anita Sarkeesian.

I think it’s becoming ridiculous. Yeah I get the whole, include everyone thing. But if the story hasn’t been written to contain women, then I feel it can damage the integrity of the story to just include people that wouldn’t have a good reason to be there.

We all love a femme fatale, but really? How many women mercenaries and bandits are there really going to be in a space.

Banditry always came across to me as more of a male dominated profession. There also doesn’t seem to many gay and lesbian people running around the Himalayas shooting at tourists…
