FFD: Are you at all excited for the next generation?

It’s starting to look like the next generation of consoles already won’t be able to keep up to up to PC’s when it comes to graphics. Even then, looking at them, do they really look “next gen?”

Is it a sufficient, noticeable step up in fidelity? does it get you excited? Having had hands on, and eyeball on experience with I have to say  that “next-gen“ games look better than videos on the internet would have you believe – but eye-candy isn’t even what has me excited.

I genuinely believe that even though PC games on beastly machines already look like next gen games, the real change will come with the use of newer, next-generation engines – and that’s when we’ll start seeing the real, meaningful changes; changes to AI and enemy behaviour, changes to physics and other things that’ll make games feel more real instead of just looking more real.

So yes; I am excited for the next gen. Are you? Have you seen or read anything that’s got you itching to get a new console, or upgrade your PC?

Pretty much – but as I said, PC games are still using “current gen” engines. the next gen will usher in new engines, and PC games will be better for it.

I have read up on the witcher 3 but I’m very very very cautious about getting on the hype train, 95% of the time it just leads to disappointment. I would rather stay grumpy old and bitter before getting excited about new pretties.

Personally, I am not too phased about next gen. Let the early adopters have a go. I throw all my budget at PC. The misus has asked to get a console so we can jam games together. I have earmarked to get a PS3 after PS4 release. Expecting price drops accordingly. And my requirements for that are not GFX related but rather interactivity. If I want Ultra GFX I load up something on the PC which handles anything I throw at it.

I’m keen to see the proper Full HD games, especially BF4, Destiny and Titanfall (i’ll get it on PC).

But whenever someone pushes “Cloud” to me as a selling point, I just turn off. Yes, it’s tech that has promise but I have yet to see any game that uses it for anything groundbreaking or something that adds to my gaming experience.

Not really excited, more like generally optimistic. I think you’re right about the benefit of next-gen consoles revolving more around interactivity, AI, etc than graphics. That’ll bleed into my master race gaming, which is what I’m happy about.

The big jump in next-gen is console hardware – games & PCs always improve incrementally / continuously.

I am excited, because I think it will change a lot of things. Those things being called the Xbox 360 Slimmer, and PS3 slimmest. I still have a whole library of PS3 games to go through, and plenty of Xbox 360 games to enjoy. I will be buying a next-gen when I am either hired by a gaming site (ahem) or sometime at the end of next year. I think it is a great time to be in gaming, I also think a lot of negativity has been brewing over the years and the flood gates have recently burst. We are all in store for a treat, IF, and only IF you are willing to move with the times 🙂

If this gen is anything to go by, then no, I am not yet excited about next gen. I will wait for price drops, as well as the gaming libraries of each console to be sorted. If I look at my current Xbox library, there are quite a lot of overhyped (aka crap) games that you cannot find anywhere today, due to not being re-released as classics. Mass Effect 1 I see is regularly restocked at Musica, CNA and the likes…

True that. I guess I am a bit jaded at the moment, and the next gen outlook is not all that rosy for me, really. Nothing to warrant getting all googly eyed over every time someone says Xbox One or PS4.

            August 30, 2013 at 11:20

I remember BF3 having comms issues coz of the limited allocated comms channel memory, PS3 just didn’t have enough hardware to to things properly.

The next gen will mean no resource limitations for a good while, developers will be able to make game types that are just no possible under the current Gens hardware.

I predict more open games, bigger environments and alot more realism.

What has been shown so far of next gen games, in terms of raw visual impact, such as Titanfall, The Witcher 3, Battlefield 4, all look really impressive. The fact that all of these are coming to PC and not only onto console though, sort of removes that feeling of awe I may have felt had they been only console-centric. So no, I am not overly excited about the “next generation”. In fact, I don’t actually see a clear and defined break from this generation in my opinion with the new console releases due. Visuals should only be one aspect that defines a new generation, not what makes it a new generation. The lines have become quite blurred, I say.

Nope, Nope and Nope. Starting to play less and less games. Building a Warhammer 40K Army to rather have a hobby getting me away from technology in the evenings. Will play one or two games, but maybe when the Next-Gen Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter and DoA come out I might get boob-physics excited about it.

    Excited for the PS4.

But it’s hard to get excited for Xbox One after all the disappointment. Maybe closer to the time, when ever that may be.

But hey if your an Xbox fan there is a console for you it’s called the Xbox 360.

I think once Microsoft re-focus themselves on the games, then I honestly believe that the XBox One will be a real contender. It just means waiting a few years, and hoping that they’ve learnt their lesson.

I won’t get a box now, but I might consider it in 3 or 4 years. At least, then I would know that the policy reversals were genuine, and that they hadn’t sneaked some nefarious nonsense in via the cloud.

I am super excited for next-gen! If I were anymore excited, my head would explode!

But, seriously, I really am looking forward to the next-gen leap. Geoff – you put it perfectly… Next-gen will more than just awesome graphics. The AI and world physics leap will just be awesome – seriously, I cannot wait. And the fact that the PS4 and XB1 are, as some people put it, like PCs, it should make cross-platform (console to PC and vice versa) much easier. Which could open up another world of games for the console! So yeah, I’m super excited for this! The Leap cannot come soon enough.

No. no we do not. We have shiny graphics, sure – but when real next generation engines start powering the games, we’ll have real next generation experiences

I have a feeling that next gen they are referring to is the same as current pc gen, I cant see anything in the screenshots or video’s to convince me otherwise.
