openworld

Even if I were a statue of a Hindu deity, I wouldn’t be able to count all of the high profile open world games released in the last few years on my fingers. Probably because I can;t count.  It seems that just about every single game is adopting that open world ethos – even in series that traditionally weren’t; Metal Gear Solid, The Arkham games and The Witcher immediately spring to mind.

While those managed to pull it off rather exquisitely, I personally feel that open world games are becoming overdone – and the biggest culprit in this regard is Ubisoft, who seem to be applying the same open world template to everything; unlock maps by climbing towers, and collect all sorts of largely pointless stuff scattered all over the map.

According to Ubisoft’s Yves Guillemot, that’s the sort of experience gamers actually want.

“We think that gamers want more freedom,” Guillemot said. “They also want games that they can play for quite a while, because there are less games now. The open-world genre gives us the possibility to offer different gamers different types of experiences. We think they are better adapted to the diversity of gamers that are in the market at the moment.”

The open world trend is set to continue – with more publishers and developers likely to make the jump to sandboxes or open worlds.

“It’s a trend for the industry; there will be more and more open-world games because gamers buy those games more than the others,” he said.

Are there some games that aren’t set in open worlds that you’d love to transition to that format, or are you growing tired of open worlds and their largely shallow promises of exploration and freedom?

Tell us! What great game series should be open world, or should developers start giving us a few more linear, tightly scripted experiences?

Easy answer: NOPE. Open world games are the best of time sinks for me.

    Yes. Tighter gamer, better stories.

Kotor 1 + 2 had big places to explore, like Tarsis, but was limited in scope. And had a great story in each place.

Open world games have their place, but it seems to me to be like a competition now, to be the biggest. Final Fantasy XV must be the biggest, cause it comes out after the others?

Diablo 2 was an open world game, too. But you moved through it in a linear fashion, controlled by the relative strength of the mobs.

I will not repeat my posts of earlier this week about “game burn out”, but it is real. Too much of the same, good thing.

I’m 94hrs into Witcher 3 now, main quest almost done. Skyrim I’ve got 335hrs clocked on and Fallout NV only around 28hrs. 52hrs on Saints Row the third (played co-op).

I usually get really good value out of open world games, but I really like to explore and appreciate the amount of work people put into those kinds of games. There are always cool details most people miss, or awesome easter eggs. And I also don’t fast travel.

I like big open world games, BUT, I don’t like it when they’re filled with meaningless fluff – like the AC games silly feather collecting & whatnot. In W3 nearly every location had a quest associated to it, that was cool. Taking over bases in games like Far Cry, Just Cause or (one day) MGSV are great fun for me, even though it’s repetitive.

I could never just play open-world games though, that would get boring very quickly, and I like my tightly-scripted games too.

If open world is done right, its amazing, if done wrong, its terribly boring. Witcher 3 got it perfect for me, 45 hours played and still haven’t had a single moment, where I wonder ‘Umm what should I do? Where do I go?’. I fail to think of a game off the top of my head now, but I’ve played some where you spend more time wondering around aimlessly then actually following any kind of story/side story.

It’s not that games are becoming open world experiences, it’s what those open world experiences entail… If you’re given an open world experience, but it’s all fetch quests and A to B chases, then yes, that is what I’m getting tired of, especially if said trip from A to B has no context/content, having to people argue about how much of a hipster the other one is is a small detail, but it makes it interesting, where most of the Ubi games don’t have that, they don’t have the gap fillers that go with open world games, TW3 was excellent in that regard, simply because you always ran into something along the way to some poor bastards early/assisted descent to hell…. But that has more to do with the quality of content as well, rather than the quantity…

I applaud AC3 for having the balls to try new things, though not all worked and they certainly didn’t work well together. I cant fault them for trying as alot of things in the series came as a result of the lessons from that.

Nobody ever mentions the use of actual indians to speak indian dialog. I thought that was really cool, even though it sounded weird to me.

I hate the annual releases for all of their sequel baiting…that pathetic hint at trying to show you that the series will never end but for lack of a better explanation we’ll just leave this half thought out story hanging and hoping that it’ll leave you with a sense of mystery…which ends up in a sense of complete disappointment rather….

They still wouldn’t let me drive though, I had to prove I had someone else with me to drive before they even started the procedure – which is actually quite good of them.

Compared to the previous time I went under anesthetic – I woke up, felt drunk as hell, then got kicked out because they were closing. That was a fun drive home.

What about a post-apocalyptic world ( like after the world is blasted with a few nukes ), where you can upgrade your weapons, kill off mutants, build towns then defend them against raiders – but single player, not multi player – and you can collect schematics for new weapons, get some power-armor or something that you can also upgrade … you can get radiation poisoning from drinking water from an exposed water-source … you don’t necessarily have to interact with the NPCs, you can just murder them … man, such a game would be epic 🙂

Mordor takes a while to pick up momentum. The biggest issue is the chieftain fights when you’re still on a very low level .

            September 4, 2015 at 11:19

I was roughly there last time before I called it quits and I had the game since Day1, restarted few weeks back then HDD upgrade game and left it , following that I’m just running around the map collecting everything, Waiting to unlock the branding function then I can do all 5 warchiefs for the achievment

            September 4, 2015 at 11:18

Shadow of Mordor became boring so quickly. Very uninteresting maps, not to mention tiny. The only thing that kept me going was the gameplay and kill moves. But I honestly can’t say it ever felt like an open-world game to me.

            September 4, 2015 at 11:22

Nah. I didn’t feel that at all. Never felt it was too difficult and I played a LOT of hours on it, but it just never felt interesting other than the fights. I played Batman a month before and it just felt like a reskinned, but much smaller, Batman.
Not to mention the awful QTE final battle.

It depends on the Game or Franchise at hand, I Mean, Batman
Arkham series, right. Personally, I prefer the smaller, focused, Metroid-vania
style of Asylum, over City and Origins. GTA/Saints Row/Just cause… yes stay
Open world, I love those sandboxes.

I would like to see a more focused mainline Assassin’s Creed, more like a Hitman game, you know, focus on Assassinations….

4 was (besides being 3 with extra stuff) just too much. The superpowers just made it so that nothing was a threat to you and most vehicles were pretty much redundant. So it lost a lot of appeal that way.

Like bad sex a bad open world title can quickly feel like a chore and not “entertaining” *cough Risen 3 cough*, so take the time to do a little foreplay with your open world title before you get trapped with a serious commitment, i thank you….:-P

Agree. Open world is only good for certain games. Personally I think some of these games are only 3 hours A to B so creating a big map and freedom to explore (useless side missions) do not make the game any better. Would you pay R720 for 3 hours? Now you have 50 hours of walking around and everybody is talking about value! It is boring with mundane task that you dont even want to do in real life.

I am truly sad that there are pretty much no AAA linear games out there. I find that Indie games are telling better stories, and I blame open world for at least 50% of that!

Here is the end here is a corridor run through and shoot everything… Yes they could have had a better story, but that is what it is now and I am waiting on NolanBot to fix some of that on Tuesday. I can’t play truly open world games anymore. I haven’t finished Witcher 3, and didn’t buy Metal Gear Solid V or Batman… I need a break from open world.

So true. There is over enough open world. Sometimes its great to play a linear game with an engrossing story like Bioshock. I get that ‘creating’ your own story is awesome etc, but following a great story does wonders. I always believe great gameplay and story makes a great game. It doesnt have to be open world with millions of multiple choices tied in. The story and the playability is stop on the list.

If they want to do a good open world game they should try something like…. ok this will sound wrong for many but like Teen Wolf. They have like ±6 friends and each one has their substories and then you have the main story which all are involved. I think that meaty sub-stories can kind of get rid of the whole collecting this and fetch that and take that to that person etc. Like you have a choice to engage in the substories of your team and venture into their world etc instead of taking on the main story. That should give enough open world playability as well as a mixture of some linear paths (being possibly the main story)
