Hugging console

On this day of commercially designated romance, we’re meant to celebrate our love for that special someone. I don’t celebrate it, but Darryn will spend the day rubbing chocolate all over his left hand. So what about our gaming platforms? Do you stick to just one, or are you a true, um, “player”?

I must say that I am loose with affection when it comes to gaming platforms. With a PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U (not to mention Wii and PS2 packed away somewhere), PC gaming rig (my husband’s but I have “full access”), Mac, 3DSXL and now iPad, I’m rather spoiled for choice in gaming. Wow, I just realized how much I get around.

That said, I am rather monogamous when it comes to particular genres. Mac and PC are for FPS and MMOs, while PS3 and Xbox 360 are for RPGs. While I used to prefer JRPGs on PS3, I have transitioned into liking the Xbox 360 more – if I’m going to play games for that many hours, I’d rather hold a really comfy controller.

Considering I only have two HDMI ports, it’s clear that my love of the Wii U isn’t really practical – it spends most of its time unplugged from the TV. The PS3 still has seniority over the Xbox, mostly because it’s the best media server and works for TV entertainment as well as gaming – that thing never gets unplugged from my TV. Do you have a port for every console you love, or are some left high and dry?

So, are you monogamous with one gaming platform, or do you get around? Are you platform agnostic across all genres, or are some games meant to be played on PC or console?

My TV has 4 HDMI ports, and all 4 get used. My 360 sees most of my console gaming time. This has been due to the controller being far superior more than anything else, so multi-plat titles get played there. The PS3 sees only exclusives really, least utilized of all my consoles. The WiiU currently sees the second most amount of gaming time, but I see that stopping as soon as I’ve finished Zelda (the system just doesn’t have that many games). The fourth slot is for my pc, but that isn’t use that much, the end of the HDMI cable just hangs out for easy access. The Wii-U is on most of the time though, as I use it to stream the LCS as well as for Netflix.

I have always been in a long term relationship with PC since I was 16. But with prices skyrocketing and me urgently needing an upgrade, I am joining the console peasants at the end of the year. Dont get me wrong, I still will play all my older games on my beloved PC, but consoles are just more social. You can invite mates over, grab a beer and jam some CoD or Mortal Kombat. A LAN is not exactly efficient.
Also, you can resell games on a console, which you cant on PC. Finally, you have much less chance of catching a virus on a console.
So I guess my answer is going to be no soon. I will still keep my PC, but will gradually move over to PS4

I was a PC junkie myself, but real life caught up to me as well. One huge benefit of a console is you unpack it, hook it up to your TV/Monitor and you are set for as long as that thing lasts. Yes, Xbox owners may have gotten Red Ring of Deathed in the beginning, but they sorted that crap out nicely.

well done in buying a house. Good step that.

Me, I need a bigger house for a pool table. Wife says no to using the “formal” lounge.

That is, I think, always the problem. You have bought a great house / home for you future PS4 (well planned, by the way) but will it be enough? Will the PS4 need, say, a bigger room for the HD Projector?

Sure, it is always enough in the beginning.

thought about, but most of our furniture is wood, old antique wood stuff. Very pretty, hard as, well, wooden nails, and good for my daughter to have one day (she is 3 months old). And out dining room is not big enough to properly play pool.

Always been a standing joke, I want a pool table, wife does not. She has a piano / sewing room, by the way. But that takes up less space

I’ve never been lucky enough to own a console in my younger years apart from the old Atari, SNES and Mega Drive. But I prefer FPS, strategy and simulation games, which is suited for the PC. Now that I can afford a new console they are really underwhelming post the N64 and PS2 days.

As for social the wii was king during my student years. Had tons of fun with it at friends place.. but I’d rather drink, play poker or citizens of catan, braai and watch the game than playing splitscreen on say an xbox or PS4.

FPS is for PC ( do not even try to argue here, you will lose )

Sports games and racing games are played on the XBOX but I got a controller for my PC so I will buy the next fifa for PC 🙂

I also play some RPG games on the console like Dragons Dogma (awesome game)

If I have to chose one platform then I will take the PC because it rules all and for example, I can play modded games 😉

Happy with any console that has good games. I do like PC too, don’t get me wrong. But after sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours a day I like to kick back and turn on a console and not have to worry about any upgrades etc. I know they are not as powerful, couldn’t care a less. Power doesn’t always mean fun. Look at the PS2, flipping amazing machine. Either way, I want to buy a PS3 now, then a PS4. I’m a whore. I know…

That being said I am not too worried about platform. Yes I prefer PC and I will always stand by the “master race” but I do still enjoy gaming on consoles.

I like games, not platform and I will play a game on whatever platform it is best suited for.

I am in a completely monogamous relationship with my PC. Although to be fair – that’s more to do with the fact that I can’t justify spending any more money on my gaming obsession.

I see comments about console prices and I always see 1 more digit than I can justify. And that’s just the console. Then you have to buy games; and not only are there 3 digits before the decimal point; the first one is a bloody 6 …

I used to be loyal to xbox360 but now im fairly monogamous, future gaming purchases are dependent on which platform most of my friends will get it on if theres a multiplayer aspect.

Nope, although I do prefer some consoles over others, but I’m not weird about it. I think the only console that I won’t buy this gen is the xbone (I see it as last gen’s Wii. Not a console I’d want nor need). I’m still saving up for a wii u, and eager to get my hands on another DS and a new graphics card for my PC.

So in short, I’m Platform polygamous, and like Jacob Zuma I probably like one of my wives more…. 😛

Mass Effect is the perfect example of that, I don’t like the game play on console and prefer it on PC(but alas I will have to live with it). And then Prince of Persia is crappy on PC but awesome on Console. If you get what I am trying to say 😛

Have a PS2 and a PS3 in the house for basically everything Sony/multiplat devs release that doesn’t launch on PC (Fighting games I prefer on console, though with KoF 13 on Steam, it’s only a matter of time before most of my friends and I are plugging our controllers in and playing each other online), everything else, PC. I’ve purchased multiplats on both before, but ended up just not playing the console version because it wasn’t up to snuff.

But, without a PS3, I wouldn’t have gotten to play Uncharted, Infamous, Warhawk, MGS4, and all the other kickass titles that I bought, oh, and Red Dead Redemption, which I borrowed, because fuck you Rockstar.

I have to say I have never liked Microsoft consoles, didn’t like the look of the xbox, owned and hated xbox 360 and the focus of the xbox one is too TV/media centred. I have a PC/Mac (Steam/App Store), every Nintendo console back to the SNES, Dreamcast, PS3 and a host of handhelds. I might get a PS4 this year later on. Share the love.
