FFD: How would you “fix” the gaming industry?

Gamers are a bunch of whiny, entitled asshats quick to vent their disappointment, frustration and anger at video games, the industry that surrounds them and the people who make them. Video games, they assert, are being ruined by people in suits, by money-grubbing corporate suck ups and bad decisions .

DLC is a scourge, games cost too much, and uPlay and Origin are abominations. Too many games featured tacked on multiplayer, too many games or too multiplayer centric. This game’s too long, that game’s too short – whatever the reasons, many people don’t want to buy games, and the AAA games industry is on the precipice of a crash. Just like the one that very nearly destroyed it in the early 80’s. Maybe.

There’s a perception, among those who’d call themselves core gamers, that the industry is broken. How then, realistically, would you fix it?

What do you think is wrong with video games, and how would you go about making it better?

More support and recognition for indie developers
If a title is to be released on multiple platforms… can we maybe release it for all of them at the same time?

if indies make good games they get tons of recognition.. the problem is a lot of indie developers make average games… at best

Stop making every game an open world game. Uncharted 4 showed again that a linear story driven game can be brilliant! Not every genre needs to have 100km’s between the start and the end and small marks on the maps where I have to go and search for the story. Let the story hit me in the face the whole way through, I am happy with that.

If I ran the gaming empire I would fire Ubisoft and EA and promote Naughty Dog and CDPR. I would then let demo’s make a return and ban all micro transactions. Mobile games can GITS and the pirates.

Seriously though, I believe that yearly releases need to be halted, let the game developers have more time working on a game rather than rushing it. This will promote better optimized games and thorough stories.

You can’t fix the industry. It’s the people, us gamers, that are broken. Companies are just trying to keep up. Mostly. We are the reason they adopt DLC, MT’s and various other practices that we “hate”. We enable them. We are the problem.

But instead of doing anything substantial, we simply whine on the internet and wish things would change themselves. And 10 minutes later buy the season pass pre-order for the next hyped up game.

As true as it is, there are a lot of old-school gamers that won’t stand for the shit they’re doing today. So, yes, I miss out on quite a few titles, but I refuse to support them, even if they get more than enough support from other idiots and will keep doing what they do.

We make up a small minority of the market. We may be vocal, but the people that make up the reason for the entire issue – they don’t care. They’re happy with the latest stuff, and they just want it all. There’s little sense of “this has value” and more a sense of “I want all the things”. And there are more than you may realise.

And yet, there are those of us that are vocal, but will still buy the games on sale. Still buy the season pass pack a year later. Still buy the odd hat, because why not. It’s just 1 hat. Every little thing.

It’s actually not worse. And that’s why it’s so prevalent. There is little to no punishment for it, only a sense of reward and money spent on entertainment. Because in the end that’s all it is – us paying twice the price for our popcorn and coke at the movies, instead of buying the DVD for a fraction of the cost.

I agree completely, but I’m not going say: “When in Rome” and go support these bastards just because “what’s done is done and can’t be changed”. I still at least have some values.

But there’s a difference for me between companies that do have MTs and DLCs and all kinds of stuff, built around a very well-planned and realistic model, and then the companies like EA and Rockstar who don’t give a rat’s arse about their customers and care only for the shareholders and lining their own pockets.
I know it’s a business, like any other, but what makes an admirable business and a good one, is one where the people running it are passionate about what they do.

But still, the consumers enable those practices. That’s my point here. The businesses wouldn’t continue with those practices if they weren’t giving results. Consumers drive the results – not the companies.

I don’t mind buying things on sale. But I don’t complain about MT’s and DLC. I see them for what they are, and I decide on each whether or not I’m willing to spend my money on them. So yes, I may be a part of the problem, but I’m ok with that too.

          • Captain JJ bound

            May 27, 2016 at 11:33

I agree. Completely. But I’m just saying from my own viewpoint, regardless of what others are doing or supporting. I’d rather three copies of Bastion to support Supergiant than buy Inquisition on sale for half the price.

I get irritated by people who use the “it’s just business” defense on behalf of corporations. Because usually they’re telling you to just accept it. My “business” as a customer is to get value for my money. If it’s right for corporations, why’s it wrong for me? We’re flip sides of the same game coin.

          • Pariah

            May 27, 2016 at 11:41

To be clear, I’m not saying it’s right. I’m saying the bigger issue is us, rather than the corporations. “its just business” is enabled by us. Doesn’t make it right, but does make us more wrong.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            May 27, 2016 at 11:50

I don’t think anyone is more wrong than anyone else. We both want value for money.

They have a choice. They’re in complete control of what DLC is released and how it’s priced. Just look at the different release strategies between CDPR with W3 and someone like 2K/Gearbox with Borderlands 2.

And we have a choice, we can either buy it or not.

          • Pariah

            May 27, 2016 at 11:52

We’re all wrong. But what that means – the industry can’t be fixed.

I still think it’s us though, not the companies. Not the vocal, smart & savvy us. The rest of us.

I think its ultimately masochistic and reductive to assume gamers are the problem, or to point at our own complicit acceptance of abuse as evidence that we endorse or want it in the form of manipulative DLC or season pases. Saying its our fault for continuing to buy them ignores how much people hated them when released up till now.

it also overlooks how much buyers appreciate transparent and valuable DLC options, no one moans when Borderlands comes out with 88 dlc packs because they add value to the base game, same with the Witcher 3.

Do not begrudge the consumer for having faith in the company providing the product. Even if those companies consistently deliver disappointing products. The internet and “whining” is one of the ways we can voice our dissatisfaction, and if you don’t think it works then I think your ignoring the massive change in overall tone we have seen in shooters this year.

I am interested to see how this discussion continues.

pre-sequel still confuses me, the game was good, but after the 2nd playthrough, i just couldnt be bothered.
and the seasons pass was disappointing AF: “30$ seasons pass will include ALL the content” then they release one worthwhile DLC pack and i didnt even get to use the increased level caps because bored.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            May 27, 2016 at 12:49

My opinion is the Pre-Sequel was a cash grab made from the offcuts from Borderlands 2 development. Might not be right, but it feels right. 😉

          • Matthew Holliday

            May 27, 2016 at 12:52

it totally was, although i like to think of it as a funding project.

its the same game, just with a new story in a new location, but that aside.
The cash grab came in with the seasons pass. 1/4 of the content of BL2, but 10$ more. marketing made it out to be more value than it actually was.

          • Luc Wolthers

            May 27, 2016 at 12:51

I pray then that pre-sequel sales figures reflect a dissatisfaction with DLC policies, which they will fix in Borderlands 3.

        • Matthew Holliday

          May 27, 2016 at 12:42

borderlands 2 isnt on my shit list, but they were definitely walking a fine line.

the increased level packs werent exactly balanced and the skins really did feel like a cash grab.
and the headhunter packs released at the end, granted they were cheap, were pushing it.

but the first level cap pack was included in the seasons pass atleast, the seasons pass was jam packed with content and content within the base game was well worth my money and the DLC was also pretty stellar.

Sure i have no beef with cosmetics, there is a market for that and simpletons that fall for it, as long as its not forced upon a person, i’m just talking about your basic single player game, with MMO’s or any other online multiplayer game i get the Micro Transactions, nothing can be done with that cause when they started and saw the amounts of cash they rake in it was the n pretty much set in gaming stone.

In a free to play game, no, micro transactions for non-essential and non-gaming changing elements is 100%
but for games that cost R800 to buy, the line between cash grabbing and value added content starts to blur.

Oh and for the love of all that is good, Fifa can be bought once and every year they can just release the “new” version as DLC for half the price!!!!!! The changes over the last 3 years have been shit to say the least, all they did from 15 to 16 was to piss everyone off by changing how we pass the ball. They just put a brick in the ball for 16 and said there now it is “new” again. DLC every new season and they will probably make more money by getting more fans into it.

Hopefully one day, 30 years from now, all directors, suits, investors, CEOs, Producers, salesmen, marketing directors and executives will be GAMERS and understand the craft first hand, so we dont get a repeat of the FAILED concepts behind the Bone launch and stupid ass decisions made by massive producers in the aid of acting over productive and hip for investors. Publishers need to regain our trust, we’ve been turned into sour cynical grumpy people. It doesn’t help that EA prostituted Dungeon Keeper on mobile or forced people to play SimCity online. Releasing Battlefront with less content than my end of the month Salticrack. Promising Raid 2 would never have DLC and now it does. Warner Brothers releasing broken games on PC and shrugging their shoulders. Activision milking the same cow year after year after year till they’ve ran out of ideas and the internet revolts as well as releasing a shitty skateboard game just to keep hold of the license.

New game? Yay, take my money. It’s got a season pass? Yay, take more. It doesn’t work on launch? Aw that’s okay, game development is so complicated & I shouldn’t expect it to work. What? I need to buy some DLC before you work on the patch? No problem! Hey, did you see that person complaining about all this? What an entitled, whiner amirite guys!

So when choosing between upset shareholders & upset customers, they choose shareholders because it’s not only in their own self-interest, but also because many customers are stupid & desperate for the latest shinies.

I think the youngsters are the ones who whine and complain. Ok if a game is not good then its not good but the nitpicking and dissecting in the industry today, not just from your avg gamer but from the journalists as well, has gotton out of hand. Back in the good old days of pure gaming, all I wanted to do was save the damn princess or damsel in distress, no plot, no story, no trophies just the goal and the obstacles in your way and dammit if I wanted to repetitively elbow my way through the game I would do it and enjoy it.

Start by releasing Demos. When you let someone play your game, not as a massively multiplayer Beta, no, a proper 1 hour demo that anyone can access and play to their hearts’ content. When people give you feedback, improve on the game. That’s the start…

    1. 3 targeted BIG BOY Nuclear Strikes, Indian Ocean, Atlantic and Pacific oceans
    2. Flood about 50 % of mankind, killing many, many innocents.
    3. All thought will go to survival and basic needs
    4. Mankind learns to get along and pull together.
    5. Star Trek universe co-operation starts amongst the battered nations and peoples of Earth. Joint resources for all.
    6. Time passes, technology and lifestyle develop at an amazingly fast rate.
    7. Space travel hits
    8. Gamers have AI’s that create games as they need, in a platform that creates images and interactive personalities based on extensive databases and resources. (Holodeck, for Emp Trevor)
    9. We live in a 22nd Century Utopia, starting to explore stars.

I think the industry is trending towards fixing itself as the demands of consumers shifts, as well as routes letting gamers express themselves become more visible.

The most interesting part of our modern industry is the break out hit, the indie darling and the ability for users to voice, very audibly, when policy or value estimations are not met by the users. Empowering the end user (petulant and churlish as they may be) is always better! and the strides in diversifying the types of games, and appealing to users of a myriad interests and niches, has certainly led the AAA companies to learn a bit about what consumers do and do not like.

And to see its effect look at how many noteworthy triple A games have foregone Season Pases, or how many provided free or very content packed DLC. ( I refer here to Witcher 3 and Far Cry Primal)

The balance between consumers and companies is always going to err towards one side as companies try to nickle and dime, and the consumer does the same. The glory of the internet age is our ability to vocalize these directly to the companies, and their ability to respond and adjust accordingly. This is not a failure, it is a success.

I am super interested to hear what other people think about this 🙂 .

Fire every single CEO of every single gaming company that can’t pass a test that would show their gaming affinity. Hire actual people who know what is going on. It really is that simple. Apple was almost run into the ground because of a CEO that was formerly with PEPSI (or Coke or something I forget). First rule of business is know your Product and many of them don’t.

The CEO of Nintendo during it’s glory years (80s and 90s) was famously not a gamer. CEOs have become glorified mascots instead of what they should be – leaders who are good at developing other people and using their talents. The CEO of a gaming company doesn’t need to be a gamer, they just need to step back and let the people who know gaming handle that angle while they solid up business priorities.

I am going to half disagree with you on that. Back in those days gaming was not the multi Billion Dollar industry it is today. Hell it was a baby still trying to find its place in the world. Even if we look at apple or even Microsoft you can see that both their original CEO’s was pretty much pioneering the industry. Then the next CEO stepped in and their respective companies dropped stock like you wouldn’t believe. You have to have passion for your industry above all else but you still need leadership skills. An example a bit closer to home. Just because you are the CEO of Absa does not mean you can be the director of the police force.

Ignore gamers completely for one, have someone with a scope and vision run your game project and bring it to finalization, before Sale. No more milking cows for online servers, give each game a 3 year server free time as a built in option, then cut it off completely. No cheats online, no hacks and absolutely no mods. Your campaign and one time selling price is your bread and butter. Come up with a new game in 3 years.
