Suckers

Because games media is generally such a controlled thing with much of the news, reviews and previews being released by publishers and their PR, the entire industry is prone to falling to pre-release hype. A certain game was released recently that has more than a handful of gamers angry for being sucked in by the great big, swirling marketing vortex. It’s not the first and not the last game that many feel didn’t live up to its own hype.

If we’re going to name-check things, let’s start off with games like Duke Nukem Forever; many got suckered by the nostalgia factor, buying the turd even though it was in development hell for years. While we’re on the subject of Gearbox, there’s of course Aliens: colonial Marines – and we all know how that turned out.

EA’s Sim City was another one that was hyped – only to disappoint, as was Blizzard’s Diablo 3. It took a year before that game was actually good. For many, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was all hype and no substance – and we’ll not even mention the original Fable… or just about anything to come from Peter Molyneux.  The list of games that over-promised and under-delivered is longer than than Darryn’s list of social offences.

Have you fallen for the hype from any of them? What games have you pre-ordered, or rushed out to buy only to be hit in the face by a cold bucket of “meh”?

All the time lol….But some of them are actually good though like The Last of Us. Others like Ni No Kuni, which was hyped to the nth factor was extremely disappointing. I try and stay away from hopping onto hype trains, but c’mon, we’re gamers, we’re easily hyped by the things we love.

I’ve given into the hype for several games, but luckily the game always turned out to be excellent. Eg, Tiberian
    Sun, Half-life 2, GTAIV, Warcraft 3 and Starcraft 2

Skyrim is a good example. I expected way more than what I got, which was basically a prettier Oblivion. Also DA2 & ME3 were let downs when taking into account the hype levels before playing them.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed them all – just expected more as they turned out fairly bland overall.

I enjoyed story of both ME1 & 2, game play definitely improved from 1 to 2 even though I was pissed that they removed a lot of the RPG mechanics 1 had around weapons & armour, 3 brought some of that back which was cool, but it’s story just wasn’t as interesting.

I played ME1 & 2 10 times between them, 3… once. And before anyone says I’m whining about the ending, I liked the original green ending I chose.

            September 12, 2014 at 11:38

Agreed, ME1 weapons and armour in ME2 (and remove stupid mining mechanisms) would have make ME2 one of the best games ever!

            September 12, 2014 at 13:08

Actually all the random upgrades to all the different weapons for all the different characters made ME1 pretty tiresome for me. I don’t mind the mining in ME2, but I can see that it will become tedious. Especially with me, I MUST finish and complete each planet before I can move on, otherwise my OCD tingles.

Actually the game is pretty fucking awesome, because it kept me immersed for hours and I didn’t realise it. Scratch everything I said, HL2 is awesome..even 10 years later.

I finished it about 3 weeks ago, it has a pretty cool story but some gameplay elements make it tiresome. Like when every NPC tells his life story to you, after awhile I just skipped everything not story related.

Skyrim’s charm isn’t the combat though. It’s the ridiculous amounts of things there are to do and see. I spend 10% fighting and the rest is all exploration and crafting and roaming.

No, you calling my fav game at the moment a bastard 🙁
The gameplay/style is different, but theres TONS of lore in it, so it definitely is in my mind an Elder Scrolls Game. But each to their own 🙂

          • JJ the Reus

            September 12, 2014 at 11:03

The lore doesn’t make it an Elder Scrolls game to me though. Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim all had this atmosphere that they shared. TESO is just a bland, but pretty, MMO with Elder Scrolls lore. In my opinion. As you say, to each their own.

          • Travis

            September 12, 2014 at 11:06

Ya its weird, I didnt even like Oblivion at all, maybe played it for 20 hours tops, but then I absolutely loved Skyrim to death. Strange how individuals can have such different reactions to games in the same series.

            September 12, 2014 at 11:08

I think the people who didn’t grow up with the Elder Scrolls enjoy TESO, the ones who did see it for all its flaws and how much it goes against what Elder Scrolls always made you feel.
So I can’t blame someone for liking it, not at all.

I think you are dead right. To be honest how can you ever follow up Skyrim anyway. The next game was bound to be a let down for most people so emotionally connected to the series, and the to try something risky like a MMO was bound to put a lot of people off. Probably if TESO was the same game but nothing to do with Elder scrolls a lot more people would be saying what a great MMO it is.

Media and marketing doesn’t really get me hyped for games. Only gameplay gets me hyped. But having said that, I find the best is when you find a ‘gem’, never heard, never seen any gameplay, knowing nothing about the game and finding out how good the game is when playing it for the 1st time.

Anyway. Let’s forget about the average games with the huge marketing budget. I can’t understand how people can relate big marketing with great games.

So let’s talk about a game what’s going to be a really good single player, story driven game, with some sword play, meant for mature gamers, NO DRM. The Witcher 3. Support the game on release day. If you don’t like it then just sell it but make sure you buy it on release day.

Don’t believe the hype. Don’t believe the DRM.

There is getting suckered by hype and believing you have because other people say so.There is an inertia to such things. Let us look at Mass Effect 3 ending saga. I watched that grow on forums and news articles, it was like a living being. One site, on forum seemed to be feeding another and another.

Hype is very much like peer pressure and I believe the internet and forums are similar to a playground when you are ten: agree with the cool kids or the other “non cool kids” will tell you you are wrong.

Never REALLY been suckered into a game which I ended up hating or feeling hugely disappointed in. The closest thing I would have to say is COD:MW2. After the original Modern Warfare was such a revolutionary game, they followed it up with a procession of regurgitated nonsense.

also found MW2 deeply disappointing when i first got it, but once i got used to the new match making system, i found the combat to be much improved. all the guns except the sniper rifles handled so nicely. still think it has the most comfortable shooting out of anything ever.

CoD4 was still the most balanced though, and other stuff.

: It’s like, if someone’s never seen The Karate Kid, you don’t say, “It’s the greatest movie ever. ” You say, “Uh, it’s pretty good”” And then they see it, it blows their freakin’ mind.

Because Cobra Kai sensei’s all like, “Sweep the leg!” And Daniel-san’s all like (does high pitched vocalizations and karate moves)

You do mean the original Karate Kid and not the rebooted one I hope.

i try stay off the hype train, especially when Ive pre-order the games.
i want them fresh, so i ignore articles about those.
if i get hyped, its personal hype, not manufactured.

I got suckered with the WOW expansions… over and over… until the scales fell from my eyes and I was bitch-slapped back to reality.

My last preorder was…wait for it…CoD Ghosts. There I said it. Bash me all you want. The game was atrocious. The MP could have been fun if the gfx was optimized and there were more than 2000people online at a time. Of which 30 was south afircan. So lekker 200+ ping with a shit game. Fun.

No, I can’t say that I have. I usually do my research prior to making my purchase. But then again, I’m not as critical as some people.

Only reason i played AC3, Watchdogs and FFXIII were since they were free to me (my brother fell for their hype).

Can’t deny though that i fell for Diablo 3…
