FFD: How brand loyal are you?

It’s interesting, looking at the NPD numbers that brand loyalty for the Xbox brand seems to be withering away in the US. The reverse very nearly happened here. South Africa is Sony land, but the cheaper Xbox 360 at the start of the generation made many gamers switch over. The PS4’s earlier SA release saw many switch back to PlayStation – showing that brand loyalty might not be that strong amongst gamers.

That said, there does seem to be quite a bit of brand loyalty when it comes to tech. For whatever reason, South Africans are in love with Samsung’s Galaxy range of phones and tablets, despite them being outclassed by just about everyone; Sony’s Z phones, HTC’s M phones – even LG’s G phones.

Samsung’s managed to build up a worthy bit of brand loyalty to its TV’s as well; you’ll have people ardently defending the new line against the current crop of Bravias or LG screens.

Of course, there’s a big one in brand loyalty with GPU’s and Pc hardware; some swear by AMD, others prefer Nvidia and Intel. Even that’s subdivided, with people preferring Gainward over MSI, or Gigabyte over EVGA.

I’d like to think I have no brand loyalty; I’d love to believe that I evaluate my purchases on a price:performance ratio… but I’d still rather have a Coke than a Pepsi, and Marmite over Bovril.

I’m not really brand loyal to anything but I do go with the motto “If it ain’t broken, why fix it”. That’s why I have only PS consoles. I use a Blackberry cell for work and have a Galaxy Tab. All that said, I don’t upgrade my tech that often either. If it still works for me 5 years down the line then why change it? If however I got burned by a brand name once in my life it will take almost the end of the world for me to use that brand again.

Battery died, and had to get it replaced. The phone feels slower than my iphone 4S used to. For the first 3 months I had it every time I tried to take a picture in whatsapp the app would crash. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to legally buy music over any app like I could previously with the istore. The camera has a massive lag issue on the first photo. Whenever I play a move I have recorded my phone pauses it haphazardly and stutters. Whenever I switch to a new tab on the browser the webpage is black and I have to re select the tab to get anything to show. I’m sure there are other things that have pissed me off but I cant remember them now. That being said my galaxy tab > than my gf’s ipad

            July 18, 2014 at 11:07

ugh. Hate it when that happens. Try reflashing it and wiping it’s memory completely. Back everything up to PC or something.

Sometimes the phones use the phone memory instead of the onboard USB memory. When that happens the phone runs slow.

It’s all the bloatware they stuff on to the galaxy ranges man. If it wasn’t for that they would run far better.

Also another reason I am moving away from Samsung. So many crappy apps one can’t delete that I never use

            July 18, 2014 at 10:59

Yeah but when I upgrade it will be brand new phone. So have to keep warranty

          • R4ziel

            July 18, 2014 at 11:28

Lol what warranty? The last 4 phones I had (including the Note 3 I have now) were all custom flashed with their plastic bits on straight out of the box.
I had an HD2 which booted up into its windows 6.5 rom once, and then Android from there… Never had any problems with any of those phones that couldnt be solved myself or by the ROm devs.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew

            July 18, 2014 at 11:48

Yeah I don’t take the chance. Had a mate where a component on the phone went. It would have been a manufacture fault swop out but he had a custom rom on it. So they blamed the rom for incorrect functionality and voided the warranty

          • R4ziel

            July 18, 2014 at 11:51

There is always a way to revert to complete stock for the warranty return. Had a friend who had to send his S3 in for a screen replacement after it died, put my screen on the phone, flashed stock rom, reset KNOX counter and happiness, waranty status restored.
The problem with these rom flashing escapades is there are plenty guides to do this but no one wants to go looking for them they just assume the warranty status cant be restored.
I sent my HD2 in for a screen replacement as well after it got scratched to crap, they swapped the screen under warranty and either didnt notice it had android on or didnt care.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew

            July 18, 2014 at 12:06

Couldn’t. It was a chip on the phone that popped. Phone was 100% dead. There was no turning on for it. That’s a situation where you can’t re-flash it quickly

          • R4ziel

            July 18, 2014 at 12:07

If its that dead, they cant check the Rom without switching on the phone so they would have to replace it first.. But hey I was just saying there are ways and means. Also, you could send it to Samsung themselves, it takes a bit longer, but they support custom roms to a large extent.
EDIT : Not Samsung SA stores, send it to Samsung intl.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew

            July 18, 2014 at 12:10

They did replace it and when it switched on they found the custom rom. So my mate had a choice of paying or receiving the phone back with it’s bust chip. It was unfortunate. But it’s the reason I don’t risk it

          • Craig Lotter

            July 18, 2014 at 12:31

Which is not entirely implausible. The ROM may very well have changes some enforced switches that then caused damage to components.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew

            July 18, 2014 at 12:44

Agreed. I understand why they void warranty for custom roms. Hence why I generally don’t do it.

The only real “Brand loyalty” I have is nVidia over AMD. However I will easilly change that when I next need to upgrade and there is a AMD that’s better performance for the cash than the same priced nVidia card.

My whole reason for switching is price. The S4 is way overpriced when compared to the G2 which is pretty much on par with performance of the S4. Heck the S4 mini costs more on contract than the G2. It just makes no sense to go the S4 route at all

Out of curiosity do you know how easy/difficult it is to transfer over your phone’s data?

I know that with Nokias (back in 2010) it was a fuck job and you had to either use Google and sacrifice several goats or sync to outlook.

Well with the G2 being android it should be as simple as backup and restore.

I wouldn’t call it “loyal” but with some brands I know what I’m getting, so I may be inclined to stick with them. Ubisoft games for example.. I know more or less what to expect, and I generally get good value.

I’ve had both let me down. I get whatever gets the best reviews on performance in price range at the time (Hence why I got my 560Ti 3 years ago as it was a killer mid).

But anyway, I’ve had an nVidia 4800ti die on me (my fault) it was out of manufacturing so they replaced it with a FX5000 series card. Man was that a piece of crap. It couldn’t perform like the 4800ti and it could barely run the first FarCry. So I replaced it with a ATI 9600. That beat the pants off of it.

Then I got the nVidia 9600GT TOP after that. That card kept me til 3 years ago when I upgraded. Because the nVidia 9600 impressed me so much with it’s performance I stuck to nVidia. My 560Ti is still strong now 3 years later and I recently SLI’d it. I am beating guys with GTX 660’s now.

So I dare say when I upgrade again it will be nVidia. BUT I always do my research and get the card that gets the best reviews and performance in price range at the time. So if AMD come out with a card that beats the same level nVidia ones I will switch.

My brand loyalty extends to whether or not a manufacturer has completely let me down or not

Being loyal to a brand has never made any sense to me, brands aren’t loyal to you they just want your money.

However having said that I can see the logic of sticking with a brand. I’m an iPhone user and I have full intentions of getting the iPhone 6 because I like the 5 and I don’t feel I’m missing anything.

Other phones may be better but I don’t really care, it’s just a phone in the end and my iPhone has never given me grief

But that’s the way to do it. Go for whatever performs best in price range at any given time. There are plenty of reviews etc to make informed decisions without having to insist on sticking to one brand. Watch. AMD will eventually get better for a time and when that happens most will jump back there. Then when Intel gets the upper hand again it’s the other way.

Brand loyalty is damaging to the market as it enforces an idea that people will buy your stuff even if it’s half arsed. Which is why Apple products (Macs specifically) are so expensive compare to laptops. Because Apple know people will buy them due to brand loyalty.

      Cyrix ShittyView-> 3DFX banshee -> Nvidia GeForce2 -> ATi Somthing -> Nvidia Geforce XX123 -> ATI/AMD Radeon 12345

To take it to consoles: I was a huge Xbox fan. Up until I unpacked my PS3 a year or so ago. The huge difference? Customer experience. Sony had this little USB cable you can use to charge the PS3’s remote. The Xbox asked me to shell out a further X amount of Randelas for the same privilege. It is but a small thing, but goes such a long way in customer satisfaction and ease of mind with your product. So yes, if I ever do go next gen on console, I will first be getting the PS4 this time around.

That’s true, but no one is forcing me to buy from them. They give me what I want as a customer and for that reason I’d rather buy a game from them at normal price than buy a game on sale on Origin. For me it’s about the principle. Where I work, if you mess up with a brand or a product customers don’t come back, they go somewhere else. The gaming world just hasn’t caught on to this yet, they get screwed over and they still keep going back to the same guys every time.

“It’s interesting, looking at the NPD numbers that brand loyalty for the Xbox brand seems to be withering away in the US. The reverse very nearly happened here. South Africa is Sony land, but the cheaper Xbox 360 at the start of the generation made many gamers switch over. The PS4’s earlier SA release saw many switch back to PlayStation – showing that brand loyalty might not be that strong amongst gamers.”

To be honest though, and I’m sure the retailers would agree, but South Africa remained Sony-land. What actually happened was that the Xbox 360 became the console of choice for a very small minority of vocal core gamers in SA. We were loud but when you look at the sales, we never had the numbers. It’s one of the funniest moments in SA gaming history.

I do have a high degree of brand loyalty… But that is because over the years I have learnt which brands I can trust and the service I can expect afterwards.

Sony Products include: Sony Xperia Z, Sony Xperia Z Tablet, Bravia TV, 4 Playstation 3’s, 1 PlayStation 4, 1 PlayStation 2, 1 Playstation 1, 1 PSOne, PSP, PSP Go, Ps Vita. Sony Vaio laptop (I also had a dual Sony Monitor setup at one stage but they got stolen) In all my years of owning these products the Playstation1 being the oldest I have never had an issue with any of them. all are in great working order and good condition.

On the other hand I got an Xbox Arcade on launch. DVD Drive broke the game disc on the first entry. Got another one. Power brick was faulty… Then I took a refund.

Also I will never buy any other car than an Audi as long as they keep doing what they are doing. Haven’t had any problems with my car so far and I’m covered for 125k km and 7 years 🙂

I’ve been reading through some of the comments and noted that there is quite a notion toward chipset developers… I have a little advice about the next purchase:

When manufacturers produce a component, let’s use a capacitor as an example(not the flux version), when they are produced a generally accepted production spec is that it falls within -20% and +50% of the specified value, now in tech, the easiest way of reducing inspection costs for physical components is to accept wider deviations. You can now imagine that if something is produced at mass volumes and on small real estate, inspections are done by testing it using a preprogrammed device for the use of functionality testing, not necessarily speed, the reason? with it being manufactured to a specific architecture, speed is largely ignored(note though that it is still tested with a minimum conformity specification), because it should perform as expected due to the architecture. With all of the components on one graphics card for instance, you will be looking at a compounded variation on one part of your pc, then we have additional factors to reckon in as well, like the crystal oscillator used for your clock speeds(if it is not stable you might find some crashes occuring etc.) etc. and maybe one more etc. Now reckon in the fact that some manufacturers try to save costs by replacing some components with lower grade(some higher grade) and you finally get to lower quality, less predictable builds.

    Woo… that was a mouthfull….

Essentially, if you like something, do some research, have a look at what the process involves, measure it up to what you are paying and decide from there, I always say, goedkoop koop is duurkoop, but a bargain is always a win!
