From reports this week, it seems that Microsoft’s Xbox 720 One just doesn’t push out quite as many pixels as Sony’s next-generation console, sparking off furious debate about which is better and just how much that extra resolution afforded the PlayStation 4 really matters.
On a PC, because you tend to be playing with your face nearly pressed up against the screen, resolution is everything. A low res means you have to contend with the jaggies that Anti-aliasing doesn’t fix, and it’s so noticeable because it’s all up in your face.
It’s a different thing entirely on consoles, where players tend to sit a little further away from the screen – so the difference isn’t quite as pronounced.
It’s posited, that should you sit 3m away from the screen you’d need one of 50” or more to actually notice the difference between 720p and 1080p. – and if you were to sit 4m away, you’d need one that was 60” across.
It entirely probable that the general populace will neither know the difference, nor even care – and the resolution differences will be a battle fought by pixel-counters. How much does resolution mean to you? Is it the decider win which next gen console you’d get?
And yes, of course it was a banana.

What you need to understand that if the xbone is struggling to get 1080p on the Source Engine (Titanfall) Quake Arena engine (COD) and Frostbite Engine (BF4) then it is all ready in heaps of trouble going forward. These are old engines that have been doing 1080p and up for years on ‘old’ PC hardware, nevermind next gen console gaming machines.
Exclusive games will probably do better, but the real money is in multiplatform and that is where money needs to be spend by devs to optimise games.
If you are going to release on PC/PS4/Xbone then 2 out of those 3 is really easy to dev for and cheaper to do so than on the Xbone (dev cost to ‘learn’ the system).
We saw this with the PS3, we are seeing it with the WiiU (how many 3rd party games are using the tablet controller?) And now we see it with the Xbone.
Sure little timmy wont notice it that much sitting 30ft away from his TV, but what about the next games? And the ones after that? You can throw more stuff at the PS3’s faster GPU and loads faster memory and it shows. Xbone is in for a hard time forward and yes the ‘cloud’ could help…but then only if MS spends the moola to plonk down servers all over the world.
The real thing here is not ‘can you see it’ (and yes you can) it is that ‘old’ game engines simply fail to scale up on the new xbox hardware (compared to PS4 and PC).
Do you think EA or Activision is going to spend millions more to get the game to run better on xbone if they can sell it on 2 other platforms without more work/money?

I ain’t no techie, from what I understand the cloud is great for storage and centralising (no google I will not use a z) data. I would need to have a significant, and affordable, internet connection to be able to use cloud services like GAIKAI or to have this data “impact” your game in real time. I understand there are CDN types that would be able to localise your “peering” but this would also be based on further investment. And wouldn’t that mean having “always on” connection to the interweb, brings back memories of Sim City.
Look I understand the whole mine is bigger/better/smaller/faster than yours argument (mine’s bigger btw), and more pixels per whatever is probably better – but what about things like AA, wouldn’t a game with 300XAA (exaggerated) at 720p look more aesthetically appealing than a 2XAA running on 1080p. Isn’t it about more than resolution?
At the end of the day it’s about the toolkit and game engine that’s being used to develop these games – and I don’t think they will have to spend millions to make different platform versions, they could do a “port” like the PS3 got the butt of so many times. I also wonder how well the XBOX OS is doing having it guts ripped out, there are some who feel that the OS is in trouble.
Fact is I love my 360, but as a layman I will most likely be switching to just the PS4 for the next gen. 1080p and 720p won’t sway my dollars. Good games, good value and options are what I want. If I was in ‘Merica (F*ck yeah!) I would probably go for the XBone.

Cloud: Have a look at Nvidia Cloudlight. Pretty cool stuff. Even on 1000ms ping it adds good results.
AA: This is the funny thing, higher res = lower AA needed. It becomes a balancing act. At 8K you dont need AA at all. At 1080 a little, at 720 a lot.
AA eats resources and can add latency to the image process, so you want less (ideally) at a very high res.
I do agree that the software dev kits is where they can get some easy wins (but so can Sony) a simple driver update on PC adds 20% better fps. Same game, same hardware so it can (it is) being done on console also, just a more complex process than patching on PC.
The real problem with these launch games is that is clearly shows that the PS4 has more powerful hardware, is easier to dev on and will probably keep the lead in Multiplatform titles for some time.
Will (non MS) companies spend the money to get the Xbone up to parity? And at the same time will they push the PS4 higher also?
First party is a given (look at Last of us and Halo4).

Resolution doesn’t matter in this next gen. 720p, 1080p, everyone will be drooling too much to see the difference. And since 99.9999% of people won’t be sitting with 2 TV’s and a PS4 and Xbone attached to either, no side-by-side, which means that the drool will follow.
When they launch, and people play these games, they will drool. They will not care about numbers because drool.

I am all for 720 resolution as long as it doesn’t look fuzzy. Some of my games I drop to 720 on my gaming PC so that I can play it on ultra with all the bells and whistles and get 60FPS (Anything below 45 and I am unhappy. I’m a spoilt brat. Eish)

The only problem between 720 and 1080 that I do have is that at 720 you see “less” of the world around you than you would at higher resolutions. This is something that is more pronounced in some games and not so much in others. It’s there that I have an issue and where resolution starts to count for me.
I do believe the bare minimum though should be 720. That mixed with a good monitor /TV will be fine really. You just need to make sure that your TV has good scaling capabilities as I can guarentee that some TV’s that run 1080 native look better at 720 than others do. Just do your homework before getting a screen. Same can be said for gaming monitors.
Oh and Geoff, I tend to disagree. In my experience I have found jaggies on TV’s to be more pronounced than on gaming monitors of < 27" due to the larger format and pixel density being less on most normal TV's (unless you are rich and can afford really expensive TV's anyway 😛 )

It relates to screen size. It is the ONE gripe I have with pc gamers (apart from the standard Nvidia AMD intel debates).If you use a 21″ screen you do not need a Geforce Titan! As impressive as it is you will never be able to utilize the damn card to its fullest. Rather use the money and get a decent screen. Same for resolution. I have a friend who is buying a ps4 yet he only has a 32″ HD ready (aka 720p) tv.Even if the TV supported full HD he wouldn’t miss much.

I see it more as diminishing returns. Because you’ve easily dropped R5k+ on a card that you can’t use to its full potential. A good mid-range card would suit you just as well for 1080p – maybe not with all the bells & whistles, but for me that isn’t an issue.

When i played the BF4 beta on my 660 ti, I have to put the quality between High and ultra and 70% resolution scale, just to get average of 60Fps. So a 5000 770 sounds good to me.

I should have used a better example cause other factors can influence performance.But we are still talking about resolution here and I can give you a simple test to prove my theory. Take a galaxy S4.Play a 480p,720p and 1080p movie on it. Now play a game of spot the difference. I actually read an article last year sometime in digital trends that 1080p on a screen below 28″ I think is absolutely useless when it comes to digital media.They also stated you need like a 50″ screen to get the most out of HD. Ill try to find said article.

Ya but I’m not talking about resolution, I’m talking about visual Fidelity, Which is separate from resolution, its the graphics settings that have high, medium and low then Ultra, if you have a gtx 650 you can forget about even attempting to run ultra settings (visual fedelity) on 1080p at 60fps in a game like BF4, that’s where getting a more expensive gpu would allow higher visual quality settings like ultra, at full 1080p and higher fps. Again I say that I’m talking nothing to do with resolution, every card between a gtx 650 and a Titan can run 1080p, but not all can run at ultra at 60fps. Gtx 770 looks just right.

I think the underlying argument doesn’t have to do with Pixels per-say, but rather the fact that because the PS4 can push more Pixels, means that it clearly is more powerful than the Xbox one, meaning that besides resolution the PS4 is more capable. This is were we get into visual fidelity rather than Pixels, and when it comes to Fidelity, you can notice a difference.
Like if you playing a game on PC but it is not that powerful, you could maintain the 1080p resolution but haver to decrease the quality to medium to keep the FPS at 60 Versus a more capable PC where you can run at 1080p at high quality at 60fps, you will know the difference. But the difference just wont be as exaggerated on the next gen consoles.

Exactly the problem with the Xbox is not the resolution, but being potentially more choppy performer. That is a lot worse than a lower resolution.

If the underlying problem is that the Xbone can’t handle 1080p then it’s going to be a huge problem for them. If they can’t handle it when next gen starts and old engines are still used, what’s going to happen in a few year’s time with new engines and 1080p as standard? As far as I can remember Xbone promised 1080p.

This issue mattered with current gen consoles and was fuel for many a ps3 vs 360 war of words, we not even in next gen and its still an issue, so much for progress

Resolution doesn’t reaally matter to me as long as it looks decent and runs smoothly.
The main concern for me, especially regarding consoles, is that if a platform runs in a lower resolution than it’s competitor, it’s generally indicative of the hardware’s lacking performance and since the next-gen consoles are supposed to be around for at least the next 5 years it makes me wonder/worry about the platform’s abilities in the future.

This isn’t even a debate, it’s a way for people to justify having substandard performance from their games. Plain and simple. Consoles are ‘supposed’ to be more resource efficient with their direct to metal nature. How the fuck is it possible, that they CAN’T do 720-1080p across the board, no questions asked, with MORE hardware resources than those past PC’s had to work with?
This is an industry standard, as of 7-8 years ago. STANDARD. The only thing holding it back on console was TV’s had to catch up to monitors (or at least get to 1080p), So we’re now to just become apologists and say oh it doesn’t matter. If it doesn’t matter, what’s the fuckin point of having better GPU/RAM/CPU’s? If we’re not actually going to SEE improvements over time, and in fact, see a regression of gaming….why even bother?
“Oh but they innovate on console Brian” yeah, bullshit. What innovation? Smaller map sizes? Longer, and more frequent loading times? Games that have to sacrifice in order to have even a modicum of physics involved? Even more sacrifice to have a semblance of AI in your game?
Everything matters. Advances in technology and manufacturing methods, should translate to a better experience. If it does not, the companies failed, and you’re a sucker for blindly standing up for them.

Wow, just amazed at how much forum comment sections have degenerated to a point of mostly having nothing to do with the actual articles. Anyway, I agree that the pixel difference between PS4 and Xbox One is so irrelevant, it’s practically like arguing over two cars with a 5 horsepower difference…at that point it’s a matter of personal preference, and ridiculing others for not making the same choice as you in these cases shows how selfish and petty a person can be. If you like the PS4, buy a PS4. If you like Xbox One, buy an Xbox One. Both have great features along with their inevitable glitches.

Okay so after this weekend, I did a bit of testing on my BF4 running on PC using my 1080p TV and had it run in its native 1080 resolution as well as an upscaled 720p resolution and I can honestly and fully say that it definitely makes a big difference. The native 1080p resolution looks really crisp and really helps on huge maps where details are far away. The 720p version looked murky and really took away from the visual Fidelity.
After doing these tests I would actually honestly say that I would prefer that they dropped fancy effects and geometry in favour of 1080p and 60 frames per second as I found that the crisp smooth experience was way more enjoyable in the end when compared to the fancy graphics running at a Murky resolution.
