FFD: Is Indie gaming taking over?

One soybean almond macchiato please!

Independent games have always existed, but in recent times there’s been a commercial and critical boom. More and more indie games are getting exposure, recognition, sales and – importantly – lots of love and playtime from people who play games.

Games like Thomas was Alone, Gone Home, The Stanley Parable, Kerbal Space Program, FTL, Minecraft, Terraria and yes, Desktop Dungeons seems to be taking more and more of gamers’ time and money.

People are becoming more and more hesitant to spend $60 on games that give them 8 hours of graphically flashy fun, when $10 indie games give them hundreds of hours of entertainment.

It’s a question of risk, too. Large publishers are reluctant to throw money at games that are interesting or innovative, preferring to fund games that are; typical rehashes of things they’re confident will sell .

"The publishers are nervous because they have to project a game being a massive hit three years into the future and the developers are frustrated because they need to be flexible to every move the publishers make," Avalanche’s Cristofer Sundberg said on the state of AAA gaming. "It’s impossible to make everyone happy in the current equation."

Though the new consoles have certainly re-invigorated a declining AAA games industry, it’s probably not enough. even on those systems though, Indie gaming is becoming more prevalent. Some of the best games available on the nearly barren PlayStation landscape are indie games like Don’t Starve and Outlast.

So the question today is, do you find yourself playing more and more indie games and fewer big games from large publishers, or do you find all this indie stuff a bunch of hipster twaddle?

I was actually just thinking about this yesterday. I’ve been buying just as many indie games lately and I’m getting more fun out of them than the AAA’s. They just have such fresh ideas.

Well, I have to amend that slightly. Maybe not MORE fun, but they are mostly more memorable, more emotional, you walk away from your 3 – 10 hour indie experience thinking “wow, that was amazing”.

Then you get your AAA 6 hour CoD and you walk away thinking “wait, was that BLOPS or Ghosts? Ah doesn’t matter, I’m hungry. I want cake. PORTAL!!!”

Indie games are more of a supplement for me. They won’t replace AAA. I do however have a greater appreciation for them as they have much more creative freedom than most big games and as a result you see some really great and unique games. Some of my favorite games this gen has been Indie games. Braid still gives me goosebumps. I still play Bastion and Limbo is still as haunting as the day it was released. FTL proves that even Indie games can be played for many many hours. I just like the fact that we get to see and experience things we normally wouldn’t with an AAA game. I don’t think we would ever see an AAA Binding of Isaac (Which is far too disturbing than most games)

Your argument is basically saying its a copy of another game with some small type of hook…
That is almost every single game that is around these days?

Most of us have that been playing games from the days of ZX spectrum (manic miner anyone :P) and been through Atari and NES and who can for get Amiga to the 1st XT all they way to now… can tell you without any doubt, that finding a game that is not a copy of another with some gimic hook is practiacally impossible, but its the gimic that catches you.

I don’t think they’re taking over, think they’re starting to get on a more even footing. They’re becoming more recognised & accepted as alternatives to normal old big studio games. With the internet, it’s also easier for them to get exposure to compete.

It’s where you’re finding a bit more innovation when it comes to game play or story telling, and it also helps that from a graphics point of view they don’t look like a pile of crap anymore either. Trine (1 & 2) are among the prettiest looking games I’ve ever played. The fact that they’re a lot cheaper & you can quite often get a lot of game time out of them also helps.

I had a braai Saturday night and we created a Julius Malema character on Fight Night Champion. Needless to say everyone ended up wanting to fight him.

If you look, that bearded douche is pulling away, getting ready to fake being knocked out, well before the punch passes just in front of his face – allowing for the illusion of being knocked the f@#$ out.

YETH. That’s why I try so hard to promote people like Make Games SA. Great indie games coming from them. If anyone is keen, MGSA has a meet up sponsored by Microsoft last Wednesday of the month (food and non-alcoholic drinks included!) Come along and show your support!

I am afraid I was one of those…you know! Download game = AAA off the shelf game in terms of production and fun. NEVER!!!

And to my joy I was WRONG! I play big AAA, AA, AB, AZ, Z or whatever they called now of course. But yip I love indie games. Heck I even beat Hardwood Backgammon on XBLA and enjoyed it! But the true eye-opener for me was Trials HD on 360…urrghhh I hate and love that game! It is so addictive but so annoying as any mistake is your own…ditto for something like Pac Man CE. And of course Resogun on PS4 is simply unmatched by any of the other big hitters in my opinion.

The only thing I find a little frustrating is some media don’t preview enough of what is out there or coming soon. Also many of the indie titles come out out of the blue…announce today, available tomorrow so there is no anticipation built.

I don’t frequent indie areas of the net so I am sure there are places but the mainstream media needs to do a little more promoting I think…or at least could…Indie Zoe excluded of course 🙂

Indie games can take more risks. There’s a lot of kak, but every now and then a true gem will surface, making it worthwhile.

In the same way that independent films can bring forth some great ideas, it’s just another way our young industry is evolving into one of great diversity, and I can only see that as a positive change.

Many say this but i dont think indie games can take a risk for the sake of a risk either…
If your game sux, it cost 1/100th to make so yo dont loose that much compared to AAA but when you budget is 1/100 and your running cost 1/100 but you earn 1/100000000000000000000000 and your capital is also 1/100000000000000000000000
dont believe its the risk they taking but just making something they really want and the rest that do fail with the 1000000000000 of horrible indie games out there are the ones trying as clone/copy/cheap/fast as possible to put out something to get quick $$$

Well, I think its fairly clear that Indie games are booming, and will continue to improve and get better.

The real debate for me is which ones do you buy? Very few get reviewed, so unlike a AAA title, there’s not a huge pool of resources with which to make a buying decision. This often leads to delayed purchases – often a year or more – when the game has been tried by enough people that word of mouth recommendations end up being your decision maker. Some people (like Zoe) are early adopters, and will try anything that looks half decent. Fortunately we have a Zoe to help us in this, but we are but one community. What of the other major gaming news sites, internationally? What of the people who get their fix from magazines?

I think, while the Indie scene is booming and doing incredibly well, having better media coverage of the Indie scene is still something that’s required.

PS. Yes, I know that wasn’t the question, but the FFD is rhetorical in this case, so have something else to talk about.

What are considered Indie these days anyway? I sometimes get the impression that people picture it as a small sub 20 man company with a limit budget producing a game. But what about say Epic Games and Crytek? Strictly they are not controlled by publishers, although they use them. But they are a giants in the industry.
So are indies a team without having external shareholders?
    With or without a publisher?
    Small or large?
Had a successful kickstarter or not?

To me an indie studio is a small studio with little to no funding. You are 100% correct about the definition of an indie though. Once a studio has a proper reputation I also think it stops being indie.

But then again that is just my weird view on this stuff

THIS is serious flame bait. NO the answer is no, AAA games are not in trouble. number 1: the massive sales figures of next gen consoles tell us this. NO ONE bought a playstation 4 to play dont starve or Outlast im telling you. Number 2: to say that some of the best games on the new consoles are indie games like dont starve and outlast is seriously skewing the debate because the consoles are brand new. People want flashy, fleshed out video games, although there are many that are more like 5 to 8 hour dud rockets there are still tons of really good high production value games. This is not to say that indies aren’t packing a punch, i just know that myself and the majority of gamers are there for the big games, generally speaking. This dabate regarding the demise of gaming as we know it has been going on since the 8 bit error and will continue for decades while we all debate this in between playing our favourite AAA games. I have to agree with Umar, indie games are a supplement. It amazes me that this forum is normally abuzz with arguments about which high powered console is most high powered and the next day the consensus is that indie games are better than AAA? Go home lazy gamer comments section, you are drunk.
