FFD: Let’s Plays are stupid and pointless, aren’t they?

FFDinosaurs

I’m starting to feel like a relic; a fossil. A large number of gamers these days consume their video game media through the eyes of other people via Let’s Play videos and other bits of YouTube tomfoolery. I grew up reading the likes of EGM, Computer and Video Games Magazine and Nintendo Power, so I’ll always revere the written word. Try as I might though, I’m completely unable to embrace this new media stuff. I just don’t understand the phenomenon of Let’s Plays, and I likely never will.

I just don’t see the point of watching some foppish young lad scream and make noises  at a videogame. I understand that with games being so expensive, it’s nice to see what game looks like before buying it – but there are people, countless people, who’ll sit and watch somebody else play through an entire game, from start to finish. I don’t quite get South Park either, but they tackled the Let’s Play thing pretty well.

Tell us: Do you watch Let’s Plays religiously? Why? Help me, somebody who has nearly no hope of understanding why, try to understand why the phenomenon of watching people play games is becoming bigger than actually playing games themselves?

I would prefer a let’s play video without the stupid American boy accents. Just show me the game. From experience, trailers are like photoshopped models. I like to see what the game actually looks like, and how it plays, mostly when trying out a new franchise or genres. I love GTA for instance, in those cases, it is just, shut up and take my money.

Yes, they’re stupid & pointless. I guess they’re for people with far too much time on their hands. I have an hour, I’d rather play my game than watch someone else play it & listen to inane drivel. I have enough voices in my head already.

The only time the words “let’s play” leave my mouth are when I’m talking to my dog.

Depends on the Let’s Plays, and who’s doing them. The mad people at RoosterTeeth make it funny (most of the time)… but some games just can’t be Let’s Played no matter who’s playing them.

Dumbest thing ever, unless I’m looking for more info on a specific game or there’s no demo. But I couldn’t care less. Then again, I’m so out of tune with the world. I hate dubstep, Kims a self promoting bitch and most shows on TV is mindless garbage. Scripted reality TV is meant the low IQ portion of the civilization.
How much you want for this? Gimme $2000. Best I can do is $500. How about $1500. I still have to resell it, $700 final offer. Deal. FFS every single fucking episode.

I can get why some watch it. Its like following a blog of someone who shares your interest. I don’t follow any, but I find them useful to help gauge how fun a game is before buying. Some reactions you just can’t fake. Its like watching a reviewer play the game before writing review.

The Arma 3 ones I occasionally watch are very good and entertaining. While the game is not my thing I can appreciate the effort these guys put in and rather have them entertain me. But erm they are not let’s play’s are they? 😛

The only time I have actively watched something like this was League of Legends or DOTA (I can’t remember never mind tell the difference) and that’s because I don’t play PC games. It was fun but that was maybe 20 mins and never done again.

Would walk through’s count as the same as Let’s Plays? I like watching walk through’s of games that the person actually talks about the game and give insightful commentary on the game and the development of the game that lead to what he is playing. Dark Souls 2 for instance, theres a walk through play from a guy named EpicNameBro that actually worked with the development team and lore and tells you the developments ideas to why the did what is infront of you.

I have a buddy in the UK that doesn’t have the time (extra money too I’m sure) to buy and play console games, but there’s still some franchises he likes and wants to know whats happening in the story (like Assassin’s Creed that releases every 5 mins), so he would put Let’s Plays on on his second screen while working all day for background noise as well as to sorta see/hear the progressions of the games he was following.

For me personally, they have started becoming handy when I need to see some real meaty gameplay of something before I possibly buy it, in this new world where you can’t trust a “gameplay” trailer for shit, and traditional trailers show little of the actual gaming experience either. So in that way, I think they are very useful.

As for people who watch it as actual entertainment, because of what the player brings to the experience? Heck, I dunno. Maybe we really are just the older generation that doesn’t understand now. Get off m’ lawn.

[EDIT: Those dudes who just scream and shout into their mics to try and be dramatic for the duration of the video are complete knobjockey’s though]

I never watch “Let’s PLay” videos.

I do not have 15minutes to watch a video of someone play a game nor do I enjoy the way it spoils the game for me when I do play it.

When watching a video like that, when you get to the parts of the game you’ve already watched, it becomes a bore. You literally are going to sit there going “Oh I know how to do this, I know what happens, I’ve seen this”

Why would you spoil a game for yourself like that?

Yes, I’ve watched one or 2 Let’s play videos before. Like Zoe’s Knock Knock (I think that’s what it was called?) video. But that was just to see her reactions as it’s a game I most likely will never play. That being said, if I do, the experience will be dulled because I’ve already seen it in action. Not through a trailer or short 2 minute gameplay video but actual lengthy gameplay. THe game experiance will be somewhat less exciting because of this.

Written reviews, in my opinion, are a far better medium for reading and deciding whether you want to play a game or not. It doesn’t spoil the game (usually. Unless the writer is a troll and gives away plot points) and you haven’t already seen how the game plays. You’ve only read about it. That leaves the mystery and excitement of playing a game first time round open for a person still.

It’s also why I never watch those “15 minutes of” or whatever length they make them. Because it’s going to wreck my experience of the game.

    Just my 2c worth

Yeah I know that. I’m just saying it could be if it was perhaps made more known to the general public.

So all these video drives of “Video games are bad for kids” why not teach parents how to identify the bad games? Positive and pro-active thinking could help change the stigma around gaming and not just gaming but a whole bunch of other things.

His DayZ vids are fun to watch and lets plays on something like DayZ does not remove the enjoyment out of playing it yourself as the game is based on experience and that changes every time you log in.

Reviewers cannot convince me anymore to buy games anymore. Maybe LG or AngryJoe but others are just so corrupt, so the next best thing is “Lets play videos”

Summary: ‘Lets play’ videos let me judge a game in a user-biased, entertaining setting rather than taking EGM’s or Squaresofts word for it.

As for people who sit around and watch ‘lets plays’ of games they intended on purchasing or already own, I dont get it.

I watched something called a let’s play in 2008 to help me get through a Nintendo game. Thus, it can be used as a strategy guide. So therefore, author is a moron…makes sense!

i hate how these bastards spoil games by putting screenshots of the final levels of the game when they are almost completing the game. It’ll be something like “Last of Us Part 17 and ENDING!!” then it shows a major event that happens from the game. I come across this whenever i’m browsing videos.

Sounds like a bunch of crusty old dudes who can’t think and put themselves in others’ shoes. You don’t like let’s plays? That’s perfectly fine. People have different tastes. People tend to forget that video games are works of art. Nothing wrong with watching a work of art being played by someone else. Even more so if the commentary is entertaining. I do however agree with the excessive screaming. That I can’t really stand.

Why do people watch other people play sports on TV when they could be outside playing them themselves. See how idiotic you sound?

I both play games and like watching others play games. Blasphemy!

I generally spend more time viewing play-throughs or speed-runs on YouTube than playing games. It’s not that I don’t have the time to play games—because I do; it’s merely that I don’t have the energy or stoicism to play games these days. It seems ironic that the only way I can enjoy a game is if I’m not the one playing it, but I feel that games have become too gruelling of late. Getting 100% in a game used to be doable, but people demanded more for their money—more DLC, more gameplay, more endings. To me, it’s just noise, but it’s almost always mandatory if you’re going to 100% a game. So I just let someone else bear that burden. I have to say, though; it is funny seeing people who play games being pompous toward those who just view gameplay videos on YouTube. It’s all consumption at the end of the day.

Honestly, I kind of think of it as like how some sports fans watch their games. In that case, you would also judge them of why are they watching people kick around a ball when they can do it as well. Personally I haven’t watched any let’s plays for a long while since I am bored of them atm, but I can understand why some people love let’s plays like how sports fans love watching the game.

Here’s how you gotta see it to understand why people like it. It’s similar to improvised standup comedy. Most people watch these videos for entertainment mostly and not really for gaming awareness from what I can tell. A good example is Markiplier. He had a massive surge in popularity due to the 5 nights at Freddie’s series bc it was the comedic Jumpscares reactions to a horror game that made people laugh and therefore entertain. The problem I see with this practice are the massive amounts of other people who partake in this practice and don’t have a single entertaining bone in their body which essentially turns the lets play into a pointless vid of some random dude playing a videogame which is what the practice is seen as by many people. Or an attractive female will sit there playing a videogame when she obviously knows nothing about videogames (this doesn’t apply to all females only the deserving among them) yet still be able to siphon views bc fuck it she’s hot. I can understand why people like it, but in the end yeah it does feel a little overblown. Overtime some of these “lets players” can tend to lose there comedic flare over time that attracted their viewers in the first place. Some even have the nerve to open a patreon account to basically get funding to play videogames on a camera…. -_-‘. Yeah sounds pretty stupid in that point of view. There are some thought that rise above the pretenders and actually do see the positive in what they provide in there own way and see it as a driving force to keep going. Think of it what you will. Hope this helps

“Let’s Play” videos are very pointless. The only reasons people make those videos are to make money and/or because they want to show the world what complete imbeciles they can make of themselves while playing video games.

Let’s plays the majority of the time, are just some high functioning autists and their online friends being loud and obnoxious while saying the most cringiest shit that they actually think is funny, over a period of 1 or 2 hours.
It’s fucking baffling how these annoying adolescent social retards can make tons of money without any sort of talent whatsoever. They don’t even need a sense of humor. It’s honestly just geared towards young teens and preadolescent kids, and of course the neckbeards and sperglords who actually would have the time as young adults to watch 2 hour videos on youtube of absolutely nothing but cringey fuckery, and still have to time for their terrible fandoms such as My Little Pony, Naruto or some other weeaboo bullshit.
I’m just mad because I literally just watched a let’s play which had millions of views with dislikes only in the hundreds, where these grown fucking men just said things like “poooooop, poop in my butt hahahaha” for like 5 fucking minutes.
Is this real life? I fucking hope not. Because if it is, humanity as a whole has already begun to deteriorate. It’s only a matter of time before we live in a world where the humor of a retarded 6 year old could generate you millions of dollars and fame in the process. Oh wait, we’re already there.

I usually watch them sped up 2.5x to 4x speed and watch much more than I game (I used to hate watching others play). I like them since it makes me feel like I am playing with someone else and it’s a lot smoother. You don’t need to install/reinstall, buy, download, setup, have a perfect computer or anything. You just pick an interesting lets play with entertaining commentary and good quality and you’re set. There are sometimes also the youtube comments that can further add to the lets play and you can always stop the video and google something that popped up that was interesting. It depends on my mood though and if I am going to be playing with friends or not. Some games are more fun to play yourself than others.

I agree. They would be more useful if they just showed key elements of the game mechanics because that’s all I’m really interested in looking at. I use game play videos as a means to determine if I want to buy a game. Showing all the relevant parts in order to make that an informed decision is all I’m after.

    Lets plays are good-
Well you see, in my opinion the lets play communities are filled with a lot of different people. It’s true that some lets plays are boring, but I think it’s more of the lets player that we should worry about. I mean, yes the game is an extreme factor but the person is the entire point of a lets play. You don’t watch a let’s play for the game (At least most fans of lets plays don’t) but rather you think of what the person says. You listen to their thoughts and opinions of the game, while they add some enjoyable things for us the views to think about. Thank you for reading 🙂

Same reason anyone watches sports. Its the same thing, dont say its not because if you watch either youre still watching SOMEONE ELSE have fun. I personally don’t like sports, but i love lets plays. You dont see me yellin “Sports is stupid and pointless, right?”
