FFD: Next-Gen is now current gen. Do you care?

With all three consoles from all tree major players now available at retail, it’s time to stop calling it “next-gen.” Next gen is here, right now – so it’s the current gen, I guess. and that’s exciting. Maybe.

It’s not, however, shaping up to the be revolutionary or even particularly evolutionary. Games aren’t running as well as they should, nor do they look all that good. Of course, much of that is down to them being launch games, and it should all get better. Games that really should be running at 1080p at 60 frames per second just aren’t.

Of course, this new generation of consoles isn’t just about the graphics; it’s all about social features, sharing your game play, your moments and memories. It’s all about changing the way we play games and how we experience things. It’s all about watching TV and chatting to your mates instead of actually playing games. It’s about shouting at your TV. It’s all about fiddling with a second screen instead of paying attention to what’s happening on the first. It’s all about updates, and mandatory installs. It’s all about playing your fancy schmancy games streamed to a tiny screen instead of your big screen TV.

The biggest real change to games should come about in physics and AI, with the new processors able to elicit more lifelike, deeper and richer responses – but that has yet to be seen.

And as we make way for new engines, even those from the master race should start seeing better games, built with better technology-  But right now, even “next gen” aren’t working as they should on the mighty PC.

The new generation is here. Are you impressed or disillusioned?

Unsatisfied. I expected more. I expected to be wowed, instead, I feel like the jump is from one phone to the next, not a 8 year jump feel.

The way I am not wowed. The only thing I’ve seen that makes me feel wow so far is the way the xBone controller feels when it rumbles or whatever it is called now. It is hard to describe, and going back to normal rumble sucks. Other than that, I feel that media wise everything has gone backwards, and graphics wise still not as good as my pc now. Not wowed yet.

Next Gen is out way too early. Been saying that since they announced these things. Could of gone with the current gen for at least another 2 – 3 years. I know it’s going to be a a year or two before I get and XB1 or PS4.

Wii U is enough for now =p

Historically console hardware was 2-4 years ahead of PC.
If the current xbone and ps4 had launched, as is, in 2010 it would have been amazing stuff. Now?

Consoles also usually peak (graphically) 3-4 years into existence. So by next year we would have been blown off our seats by what the consoles are doing. As it stands now we are looking at 2016-2017 to be blown away and I fear the ‘pc’ gap would be so massive then it will be extremely hard to impress people on console.

It would be the same as the last few amazing console games on PS3 and 360: the games look amazing, considering the hardware, not HOLY SHIT TAKE MY MONEY!

I walked into a musica in 2001, saw a PS2 for 2k and went, shit that is cheaper than teh GPU I would need, and no GT3! on PC.

            Swapped to console right there!

My then PC ( a 12k PII running at 333mhz) could not compete!

PII in 2001? Your PC was dated for average use not great for comparison.

In 2001 I joined 1GHz club (AMD Athlone) with a GeForce2, it was about R4k for everyhting in the box.

It blew the pants of anything a PS2 could muster up but then again PC and console gaming differed a lot with cross platform games being poor ports either way.

Build in 1998 for just over 12k… amazing how cheap PC’s have become since then! My gaming rig as barely 10k in 2011!

Late 90’s was the time to jump over to AMD, they made a big push into the market while Intel was still trying to ride their secret rip off the customer dealings with MS wave.

The PII 333Mhz was over R3k for MB and processor versus the AMD K6.3 366MHz was less than R1k for the combo.

Also people got majorly ripped off by the PC shops; I always bought my components direct from distributors for less than 50% than in the shops. As more direct dealers became available the classic PC shop prices also started dropping.

Actually, was it not Only the 360/PS3 gen that was considered “ahead” of PC at launch? (okay, and the PSone in 1994) I cant remember the PS2 or Xbox being lauded as Ahead of the curve when compared to PC…

On paper yes but in reality not so much.

Games developed for the specific platforms looked way better on taht platform. For instance nothing on consoles came close the Half-life 1 & 2 or Diablo and Buldar’s Gate and console never really matched RTS games. Same for Forza and GT on the consoles versus racing games on the PC.

When games were developed for both platforms like Oblivion was there wasn’t much of a difference.

          • El Capitan del Blade

            November 22, 2013 at 12:07

To quote yahtzee: “The lack of a mouse will forever cripple RTS on console”

I will concede that Racing games have always looked better (And played Better) on Consoles.

            Except carmageddon, Carmageddon kicked ass.

True, I mean, could you imagine Morrowind on a PS2, would’ve made the thing explode :P.

Wrong, This is a serious misconception based on comparing consoles to average PC’s not built with gaming in mind, but rather based on average use standards.

I am sure that the future titles for the 360 will be good. Don’t think it would make financial sense to just drop all the 360 owners with the launch on the new console.

The catch is, normally when next gen comes out, devs get sloppy with last gen games.. Also games slowly start getting less and less, as more exciting games are on next gen.

            November 22, 2013 at 14:03

Well they have this level system where the more products you have with them the higher your qualifying level becomes. For example i have 2 loans, registered e-bucks with i think about 4500 e-bucks (if you maintain a certain amount your percentage increases) as well as a savings pocket i have with them with another savings account with them. I have ADSL through them as well now which pushed up my percentage. Also i shop just using my Cheque card at Pick n pay and pay fuel with my card as well. The more you use your cheque card at certain shops and so fort the more you earn. Not just e-bucks but also it boosts your discount potential on future products. Like you can get up to 100% off your ADSL account through them which is quite cool. Also if you maintain a certain amount of savings as well as save more then that helps increase your level system as well.

Haha 🙂 Let’s comment something a little more proper – I personally don’t own a console, but a lot of my friends do and I really do enjoy various aspects of consoles and I think the new consoles have a lot going for them…I do however feel extremely underwhelmed at the new consoles! The point for me, however, as a software developer who makes a living out of a PC, is that as a complete package, consoles will always be lagging behind PC’s in performance and gaming(social lounge gaming excluded – consoles win) – it’s a matter of a couple of laws, notwithstanding Moore’s law…

            Thanks.
Yeah the “PC FTW” needed a mind reader to understand what I was trying to say 😉
Had a good gaming session with a friend last night on his PS3 (MW2) and I appreciate what they are trying to do…what really bugged me last night though, was the responsiveness of the control vs. that of a keyboard and mouse…but I assume that’ll get better with the next gen.

And it’s really a thing of knowing it and getting used to it. Though I just got a new mouse and the difference that made to responsiveness is incredible.

True – was the same when I first played with a mouse – felt weird:-) I guess my brain, and sentiments, are just too wired to my mouse and keyboard to really want to make a shift, when I don’t feel that I need to. But then that’s one of the SteamOS things I’m looking forward to – the marriage between Console and PC where hopefully we will have the best of both!

Will only be taking the step up March 2014.
Depending on titles out by then will probably pick up both a PS4 and Xboxone.
But will look at it closer to the time.
For now still have a huge backlog of Xbox 360 and PS3 games to get thru by march.

    Slightly disappointed. I was considering getting a PS4, but…

All the stuff that annoys me about modern games they have increased. Achievements, social integration, rewards and other useless immersion breaking gimmicks.
The OS are bloated and the low level advantage consoles had has also dissipated.

While not really the consoles fault games these days are also increasingly dumbed down and streamlined that leaves you with no challenge or real sense of achievement.

Hopefully Steambox can grind into these closed systems and open things up.

PC gaming is still suffering from bad coding regardless of how superior it is. Look at the complaints about COD: Ghost and AC4.

And they main reason those issues exist, is because most games, even FPSes, are being developed For console first with PC ports. Look at GTA4…. And Saints Row 2 form back in 2008. I mean, there are graphical and performance stutters. still. It shows how the market has Shifted, in the 90s Console and PC were too Totally different Platforms with little to know crossover, and both platforms were regarded equally. By the time the Xbox360 and PS3 rolled around, Console gaming was dwarfing PC gaming. and a Shift in development style occured. because money.

I think they should have waited another year and announce it next year and release following year. I also think that they could have done a lot more with next gen consoles where specs are concerned. They should have known that the next jump in next gen should have been full 1080p running at a constant 60fps. Thats what there aim should have been. If you look at the cost of building a pc to get a constant 60fps on graphic heavy games, then an option to buy a console that is capable of pushing that with every game without even thinking of upgrades would have been perfect. That would have separated PC gaming from Console gaming. To this day not everyone is capable of running a game at full graphics, 1080p at 60fps. I know 30fps is good enough, but the jump should have been 60fps, 1080p and no less.

I agree they should of waited, but perhaps the gap between now last gen and pc games has grown too much and they want to keep up the times… sure high end pcs are already faster and more powerful, but what they are able to achieve with consoles is always impressive.

I also agree with what you saying. Its just that PC gamers are always praising updated hardware etc etc so they will always be top of the crop and i dont deny that either. I play on PC and console, but there are lots more console games that appeal to me than PC. The difference between PC and console in my opp is the games basically. If the console manufacturers were able to keep every game full HD with 60fps. That would have also stood out from PC. In the end PC will always be more powerful with updated tech, but if Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft did the 1080p + 60fps. It would differentiate the console even more from PC.

That doesn’t really matter I think. Cross platform games aren’t really optimised much for PCs, you can get higher res & stuff but otherwise not much difference really, and there aren’t any major PC exclusive releases to compare with yet.

Not really. You just tune down the graphics. It depends on the game though, a slow SP game 60 is fine. But for a racing game or a MP fps you just tune down everything to low. I hit a 120-160 with almost everything on low in BF4 MP with 32 players.

Which is why I wish console game also at least gave you a few pre set options so you can tune the graphics/performance to your taste.

I get what you saying, but because PC gamers like to brag about the fact they have constant hardware upgrades and consoles stay with the same hardware for years and there PC’s max out graphics at 30 – 60fps on full hd tells me they the ones dishing out all there cash on upgrades and they the ones expecting nothing less but the best in graphic performance. Like you i tune my graphics on my pc so i can run games on a better fps, but what i basically am saying is that people want the best. They want a really worthwhile upgrade. PC gamers get that almost every few months whereas consoles gamers every few years. So if they can maintain a full hd resolution with a combined 60fps. That would make things a lot better for this new gen that started.

            November 22, 2013 at 11:45

I agree with that. But I think 60fps should be the lowest for any game even the Sims 4. Sure you can have your handful amazing moments where it drops to say 40. But for me 30fps really makes a good game a lot less playable.

          • CypherGate

            November 22, 2013 at 12:02

I agree with you on that. You see also many people haven’t played games in 120fps (me included) but i would imagine it being a lot smoother than 60fps. yeah if the lowest drop is like 40fps then thats ok, but i just think that they should try there best to maintain a locked 60fps. I mean… almost 10 years has past with regards to the PS3 and 360 and they still cant do that now?

Then again people have been ‘happy’ with 30fps and 720p for 8 years… so maybe to those people the bump up is enough of a lure to spend 6-8k on ‘next’ gen?

I have just discovered 1440p and am now wondering why I ever bothered with ‘just’ 1080p.

I do prefer PC to console, but there are few games that just feel better on a console and I was considering getting one, (PS4, as i have a Xbox 360 – which basically is for street fighter and rockband) but the fact my AGING pc which did cost a bit to build, but bought it with the mind of it lasting 4 to 5 years, has more power than the now-current console makes me really wonder what the point is…

Maybe if game devs stop wanting games to be social networks and actually games, things might get better……..I hope.
