For years, people have been asking if PC gaming is dying. There’s a valid, but misguided reasons for the question. Complete PC sales are down. Component sales are down – though Pascal and Polaris helped pick things up a bit. Brand new game sales on PC are general down too – lower than the numbers you’d find on the consoles.
I don’t, however, think PC gaming is dying, or anything even close to it. I do, however, think it’s perhaps becoming less appealing. Many of its advantages are being whittled away for whatever reasons. While it’s true that there are many more PC gamers, it seems that most of them are playing just a handful of games; Counter Strike: Go, Dota 2, League of Legends, Warframe and World of Warcraft. While PC gaming is earning more money overall than consoles, it’s largely confined to that handful of games. The PC is also a much more active home for indie gaming.
It makes a little sense then, that so many PC ports of new “AAA” games aren’t given the focus and attention they deserve. Just about every new blockbuster AAA game that hits PC is crippled or broken in some way. Then there’s the pricing argument. Where PC gaming was once cheaper overall, pricing is very quickly catching up – and brand new games on PC cost just about as much as they do on console. New games are regularly selling for in excess of R1000. Steam sales aren’t nearly as appealing as they used to be, and consoles now offer sales that also give away games at great pricing.
Consoles now – thanks to the release of the PS 4 Pro – are capable of higher end visuals too, with some games (like The Last of Us and Skyrim: Special Edition) even rendering natively at 4K, though most use clever upscaling techniques to keep things running smoothly (but still looking great). Consoles now support mods, so one of the PC’s best features is also diminishing.
On the flipside, consoles are becoming more and more like PC’s – which may or may not be a good thing, depending on how you like to play your games. Of course there’s the question of control; PC gamers will always favour using office equipment for their movement and aiming. But you know what? They don’t have Bloodborne or Uncharted 4.
While we could debate about the merits of each over the other for all eternity, the real question is – with pricing parity, poor ports and great console exclusives, is PC gaming losing its appeal?

Ports are shit and hurt my feelings, but theyr less shit than they used to be at the start of this current gen and last gen.

This is something that I have been thinking about a lot recently. For reasons I cant game on PC at the moment, so were forced to get a console. Went with XBOX since the gameshare is easier, the libraries for 1st party is shared (should I return to PC) and well thats were more of my mates are.
The fact that consoles now have shorter gens (looking at ps pro, one s (to a degree) and the looming Scorpio) and that mod support etc is coming makes it more bearable. I really miss my Arma and Dayz game sessions, but hopefully with more powerful hardware those games will also hit consoles at some point.
Having consoles be more “PC” is making them more and more appealing to me. With gameshare it is also far cheaper now to play the latest and greatest than PC.

I wouldn’t call what they have on the consoles “mods”, more like custom tweaks. It is like pasting a few vinyls on your Chevy Spark and calling it a street racer.
As person who have a huge potential PS4 library and can buy a PS4 for third of the price of PC I’m still saving for a PC.
All the console exclusives are third person shooter/fighters none with really good story experiences and racing games.
PC is more future proof platform (probably why sales are dropping) and early access and great indie games;on console your only option is R1200+ copy and paste AAA games and indie arcade shooters.

Although to be fair I’d love one of each console for those exclusives and to play in bed, but you know. I have a large library on my PC and I still enjoy that. Plus I also use my PC to do other stuff like work and create and stuff. You can’t do 3D modelling on a PS4.
So there are use cases, each has its advantages. And if we could afford it, I’d hazard a guess that many who cry patriotism and vitriol would feel the same – one of each.

Console is ‘plug & play’ or rather ‘put it in and install and play’.
PC you need drivers, proper operating system, proper hardware, sometimes even a constant internet connection.
I think PC gaming is much more enduring than console, but with prices going up for hardware and software, console gaming is oftentimes more accessible.
Also, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Bloodborne etc.
Finally, Farming Simulator 2017 is available on PS4, so console gamers have everything they need.

I think the underlying problem with gaming is that we are still divided underneath. We just wall ourselves in and deny the segregation exists, creating a warm bubble for us to exist in. Nobody willing to tackle the real issue of division, that like a snake sits and waits in the dark, ready to rear its venomous head and strike. Each side inevitably brings up the topic of their “enemy” platforms dying, hoping to find comfort in others who feel the same, misguided as they may be.

See there’s is just one thing you can upgrade on a console, it’s the HDD, which I did. Plus it’s not cluttered with things like DRM clients, anti virus software, Punkbuster or Windows 10(which at the moment seems to be on an update killing spree)

And yes, all the different clients do suck, but at this stage it’s become a bit like exclusives to me, and as with not being able to get PS4 exclusives I’ve just accepted that EA games aren’t something that I’ll bother with.

Not a fuck, I love my PC because it’s the bestest. I don’t want a console AND a PC, I want one machine that does everything – and that’s a multi-purpose PC, and I’m very happy with my choice because it suits me perfectly.
Buggy ports? What’s new, it’s been happening for the last decade. I’m more surprised when a game ISN’T buggy on day one.
Pricing? There are plenty of great options. Yes, options. Options are nice. I like having them.
And when it comes to console exclusives, guess what… if I really felt like I was missing out on not being able to play them… I’d buy a console so I could… and I haven’t.
If all you want is to play AAA games on day one – get a console & be happy, it’s better for you. But that’s not what I want.

As a PC gamer I can concur.
The most gaming I’ve had this year was from Warframe. Followed by Diablo3.
Games coming out on PC just don’t feel good anymore. These crippling issues that so often occur just make me want to buy games less and less.
I’m actually reaching a point where I’m about to give up gaming all together.
I can’t afford a console to replace my rig. I can’t afford new games. Even if I could I’d have to wait weeks or even months for the game on PC to be patched correctly after a horrendous port or for proper graphic driver optimizations to be released.
PC games aren’t dying because people aren’t interested in PC gaming. It’s dying because devs and publishers aren’t interested in delivering the same quality of game they do on console. This is causing people to start hating PC gaming.

Initial impressions do make it look like a tiny garden, but its a garden that was once a concrete slab.
I can now play forza on PC (if I ever bother to upgrade to win10) where I couldnt do that befor.
Its a start, and its something.
Time will tell if the garden turns into a field / nature reserve.

I think the appeal of console gaming is the fact that every few years a new addition arrives adding promise and excitement, while staying up to date with the latest gaming PC costs money and requires half a brain to make sure you don’t waste that money.
For single-player games, yes I think PC has lost its edge on console since every game release is broken, and takes a few patches to fix. Not saying this doesn’t happen on console, but it’s far more prevalent in PC.
The great thing keeping PC alive are competitive games (and the others you mentioned in the article) and I think it’s a comfortable place for PC, for now.

Depends what kind of SP game you’re looking for – I’m a mostly-SP gamer, and I’ve found far more enjoyable indie titles on PC over the last few years when compared to the AAA ones, which nearly always come across as dull & generic story-wise.

I think for me I like having the choice of not needing to log in every day for a game. I easily spend hundreds of hours on a single addictive game, but WoW gets to the point where you have your weekly checklist. “Farm mats for potions, do some crafting, make some profit, raid 3 nights a week, weekly dungeons, dailies.” And towards the end “PvP suckaaaaaaz, wait fuck mages.”

PC part costs locally skyrocketed last year, tech doesnt depreciate here, new stuff just gets more and more expensive. graphics cards costs as much as consoles.
Since the game prices have increased, youre still paying R1000+ for a new AAA game.

Not really. Like I said earlier in a separate comment. I just upgraded my 3 year old pc for under R5k. For consoles to upgrade their three year old devices you need to buy a new system for way more. And, I’ve transferred all my games over from each upgrade of my pc. I just bought my wife a new pc this week and she doesn’t need to buy a single new game if she doesn’t feel like she wants to, because ALL of her Steam games will work on the new system. That, in my book, is way cheaper.

Not really. They’re about the same as console over time. Buy high mid-range stuff on PC and it’ll last many years. For instance, my PC cost R10k 4 years ago. I just replaced the graphics card, and only the card. R5k. That’ll last me another 4 years. R15k over 8 years, roughly R2k a year. R6k for a new console, 3 years replaced. The math works out.
And yes, I can play any new game on ultra 1080p at this point. Also, R409 for Shadow Warrior 2, 499 Deus Ex, 799 is rare and rather high (and that’s the Bethesda price point too). 1k is literally only EA being ripoffs.

I agree with most of the things you stated, but it’s not completely truth consoles support mods. 2/3 games from Bethesda support mods (and not fully on Sony’s side, that imposes for now that mods can only use in-game assets) while on PC almost every popular game features mods. Where’s the mods, for example, for GTA V, on consoles? That’s what I mean.
