The first year or so of a new console generation almost always completely fails to be impressive. Sure, things look a little shinier, run a little smoother and integrate more features but there’s almost nothing that blows minds, or melts eyeballs. Is that the same in this eighth generation of consoles?
Have you seen anything this generation so far that knocked your socks off? According to most people with eyeballs, inFamous Second Son on the PlayStation 4 and Ryse on the Xbox one are the best looking games for the new systems.
I’ve played both, and while at least one of them is a pretty good game, and they’re easy enough on the eyes, neither screams “NEXT GEN” to me. Sure Infamous looks great, but it’s really just more infamous with a shinier skin, and a terribly lifeless city.
Watch Dogs has a much more living, breathing city (as long as you can actually log in to play it) but hardly looks any better than last gen’s GTA V.
I’m a grumpy old sod though, and nothing impresses me. What about you? Has anything this generation knocked your socks off yet?

I disagree. Go put in a copy of Gears of War 1, GTA IV, or Uncharted 1. They don’t look as good as you remember. They were early titles, much like these are now. It’ll get better.

Yeah Resistance 1 is an eye-sore now. Still a fantastic game though, but butt-ugly with shades of PS2 graphics. I recently replayed Killzone 2, and wow.. that game has aged incredibly well – same with Killzone 3. I’m yet to revisit Uncharted, actually keen to see how it stands up to the fiend that is time…

Well, then we’ll just get into Graphics vs. Aesthetics Argument. Because The last Gears of War, aesthetically looked Horrible when compared to say: Jet Set Radio on the dreamcast.

No shadows in front of car headlights, cut and paste window reflections is SOOOO NEXT GEN.
Im talking to you WATCH DOGS.
Otherwise Infamous and Tomb Raider HD HAVE BLOWN MY EYEBALLS OUT OF MY SOCKETS!!!! 🙂
NOW HURRY UP The Last of US, UFC, Uncharted 4, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age

While, I haven’t had the chance to play as many games as I would have liked (or at least bought as many as I would have liked), PS+ has kept my library growing. Just reading through the comments it seems that those with PS4s or boners are saying “HELL YES”, whereas those who have yet to upgrade, don’t see the point in it yet. Infamous, Tomb raider and Trine was actually awesome. Compared to PS3 huge difference. Next generation is not just about the graphics also so much faster and easier to play. I am going to sit on the fence slightly – as a PS4 owner, I think the hardware is brilliant, interface is way better than PS3, PSN is integrated brilliantly, the selection of PS+ games has been good in my opinion.
However, the games…hmmm no, not as impressive. Sure they look shinier and more going on – no question about that. However, nothing overly new from last gen really. Not yet perhaps anyway.

Absolutely agree. I don’t like it, I think it’s laziness, because publishers are banking too much on games of the past, with no incentive or desire to innovate. Once in a while is fine, but we’ve reached a point where almost every last-gen AAA title is getting an overpriced HD current-gen version.

Although, if you’re a publisher and you want to make quick money, you’re going to put resources into something that’s known to make cash. A new IP is a gamble, but the problem with HD remakes is that it pushes gamers towards franchise fatique.

I’ve played some good games, that can’t be denied. There has been very little however that has really seemed “Next-Gen” to me. Even from a visual standpoint. Titanfall was fun for a spell but the screen tearing and frame rate drops on a dated game engine really left a bad impression as time went on.
Watch Dogs has become a lot of fun, and Chicago looks really good at night. It runs smooth, but I’m in complete agreement that it doesn’t feel like much of a step up from Grand Theft Auto V graphically.
Battlefield 4 is the only title that feels like something I couldn’t have experienced on my 360. The superior framerate in comparison had much to do with that.
Other than that, this generation has been nothing but HD remakes of stuff I’ve already played, and nearly everything that interested me being shifted to 2015 and beyond.

PS4 is the first console I’ve bought – I’ve always had Sony consoles. I’m obviously impressed but I don’t think I’d recommend it to anyone who already owns a console. There’s nothing that screams you have to get one (Second Son is gorgeous blandness). I got it because I really wanted Watch Dogs, I didn’t have a console anymore, and I write game criticism.
I think what genuinely impresses me and I think most people is the future: from future games like Destiny, The Division, Arkham Knight, Shadow of Mordor, to tech ideas like whatever Project Morpheus will eventually get called. I’ve always been a sucker for Sony studios, like Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and now I’m really excited for The Order: 1886 next year.
I’m really impressed with Quantum Break on Xbox One – and it’s Remedy, so it’ll be amazing. Sam “Max Payne-Face” Lake!

The only thing next gen currently is PC. 1080p60, games finally going full-on x86-64 required, going 6GB RAM or more required, Watch Dogs actually launching with an Ultra texture option (no matter how poorly optimized) that requires you to have 3+GB of video RAM…
So the next gen thing I see right now is a jump in required specs, which if you’ve been following PC gaming you’ll know is HUGE since they hadn’t done much of any kind of jump for years. It had been a joke amongst PC gamers that you didn’t really need to upgrade since Sandy Bridge and higher end nVidia 5xx (or maaaaaaybe 6xx) series / AMD 7xxx series. There just wasn’t any case where you needed it.
Now you at least need video cards with more than 3GB to be gaming comfortably at 1440p/1600p with AA and I suspect with DX12 we’ll see a real reason to have CPU’s with more than 4 cores, though I imagine we’ll STILL be favoring Intel’s superior thread performance over AMD’s pseudo-core approach in their Bulldozer and beyond CPU’s.
So the next gen is the PC gamer hardware upgrades to come. We’ve had a good, long run, though.
As far as games go, I suspect we’ll have to wait for The Division or whatever that action MMO is going to be for something like that. Or more likely The Witcher 3.
Basically, wait for a game that does not have even a vague attempt to port to 360/PS3.
