FFD: What 2015 gaming trends are great, and which need to die?

It’s now more than half-way through the year, E3 is done and dusted and some trends are starting to take visible shape. For starters, there’s the obvious stuff; a huge focus on VR from just about every corner of the gaming globe.

Something else we’re seeing is the explosion of the MOBA – and I don’t mean a proliferation of MOBAs themselves, though that’s a long trend that’s still continuing. Instead, we’re seeing a great many features of MOBA games being introduced in to other genres, as with Battleborn and Overwatch (games which are interchangeable in my head) that borrow elements traditionally associated with DOTA and its ilk.

Another trend that’s continuing is one of remakes and remasters. This year we’ve already seen remasters of Saint’s Row, Borderlands, Devil May Cry, Dead or Alive, Dark Souls 2 – along with stuff hardly anyone cares about, like Worms World Party.

Wide open spaces seem to continue as far as trends go, with just about every big game – if not wholly open world – certainly adopting an open-world flavour. Uncharted 4 is an example of that, while Horizon, The Division, The Witcher 3, Arkham Knight and Assassin’s Creed give us great big open worlds to explore.

One trend that I’m glad for is that forced multiplayer is finally going away, it seems. Developers and publishers are finally starting to realise that it’s not necessary to tack a superfluous multiplayer mode on to every single game, and that there’s a market for games that let people play alone – as Fallout, Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3 and Skyrim have proven.

Another trend I’ve noticed? Player creation. Games like LittleBigPlanet paved the way, certainly – as did Minecraft, but there seems to be a big focus on letting players be the creators. Mario Maker is a great example of that, as is Media Molecule’s Dreams, and the announcement of Fallout mods coming to consoles.

Those are some of the better trends, in amongst the awful ones like huge day one patches, shoddy ports and egregious, superfluous DLC.

Tell us though: Which gaming trends are making you happy, and which need to die in a fire?

Nothing makes me happy any more. I’m cynical and jaded, perhaps. But so far this year, I can’t seem to get excited about anything in the gaming industry. Doom looks fantastic, No Man’s Sky looks like an adventure, but neither of those are following trends. The first is Doom. Nuff said. The 2nd looks like a potential time sucking adventure. But it’s unique.

So. Basically. Trends can eff off. All of them. Including VR. And remakes. Remasters. DLC. Season Passes. Broken games. Open world (seriously, I’d prefer a solid, linear story to 150 hours of wandering about aimlessly).

Also. That sounds way to hipster. I’m out.

Jeez dude, that’s not good. Take it from Oom Grumpy Banana – one should never be TOO cynical. A little bit is fine, in fact it helps you to remain a realist, but the other side of the spectrum isn’t healthy.

Good trends? Gamers are getting more power. Double edged sword though but it’s good that consumers are getting more power and having their voices heard.

Besides the obvious shitty PC ports and disgusting DLC and day 1 patches…Am I the only annoyed by teaser trailers for actual trailers to games that have countdowns to another trailer that leads to an ACCOLADE trailer that gives details to some Twitter campaign and yadda yadda…Also, on trailers….Please…PLEASE…be honest with your trailers.

Saints Row needs a reboot. Though, after GTA V, they’re gonna have to pull a T-Rex out of their hat. As far as trends go: Superflous DLC needs to go, and be built into the game for players to unlock.

“bog focus” tee hee. There’s only one thing I focus on creating on the bog. 😉

My least favourite trend – DLC milking. It’s the game, then it’s pre-order DLC, then it’s the season pass, then it’s additional DLC, throw in some MTs too while you’re at it.

I also need to whine about heavily curated review play testing – Evolve, winner of over 60 awards, and yes, Batman AGAIN – practically every early review is stellar, yet missing the fact the PC version is broken.

My favourite new trend – REFUNDS

    Fucking shit PC/Console ports.

    *EDIT – And Pre-Orders.

    1. Remaster console exclusives and not games that are less than 10 years old.
    2. Make DLC worth our while don’t nickle and dime us
    3. TEST your games before releasing it, don’t patch it later and make sure the servers can handle it.
    4. Stop preorder bonuses. People did that to secure physical copies. We have digital games so there’s no need. Collectors editions are fine though.
    5. Enough with yearly releases. Give your games time to breathe. Create a hunger for the sequel and it will sell well. It will also allow for more development time.
    6. PR people need to be FIRED. Let the devs talk to us. They speak our language. Enough with “value”,”online experience”,”meaty chucky content” or “more rewarding gameplay”

    These are bad ones:

Moral Panic – didn’t work in the 90s, it’s not going to work now. Let’s stop being so damn shocked at everything.

Borked Games at Launch – You’re at the premiere of a highly anticipated movie, about halfway through… the movie stops, lights go on and the cinema apologises. Thanks, but your apology has done NOTHING to fix my experience with that movie. Games, just stop this… it’s bull.

Console Wars – Shut the hell up already. You bought a console, doesn’t mean you have to continually be antagonistic about it to validate your purchase; you’re only doing the work of SONY or XBOX FOR them by continually making other gamers either defend themselves or feel like kak – it’s free advertising. Competition is good for companies, for gamers it only makes us dumber.

Indie Darlings – Yay, I love indie games. They’re great. Please stop making people who don’t like indie games feeling dumb and/or that they’re not contributing to the “maturing” of “gaming culture”. It’s absolute bullocks. I don’t HAVE to like your game because it’s an indie.

    These are good ones:

Consumer Respect: It’s nice to see devs who respect their intended markets do well in sales. I mean, it should be the default but it’s nice to see this trend recognised! STEAM REFUNDS!!!!!!!

The Score: It’s also nice to see scores meaning less, and experiences meaning more. This doesn’t mean you can’t rate a game with a fancy number but it’s nice we’re talking about more than graphics sometimes. We shouldn’t stop talking about graphics, gameplay, mechanics etc, but it’s nice to widen the conversation.

        Actually it’s more like:
        “My freezer actually works.”
“Oh, really? Well my fridge compartment doesn’t freeze everything in there.”
“Oh yeah? Well you suck because KIC is all for the vegetables man. What do you got? Meat? Pffffffff.”

I think by eating a vegan you can make the biggest pro-meat statement there will ever be.

To prep your vegan, first tenderise it a little to let all the juices flow.

Yes on the indie comment. With the inclusion of people hating on indie simply because they “only buy ‘AAA’ titles”.
That’s just as much bullocks 🙂

Second, stupid, useless cosmetic DLC that gets charged at exorbitant prices…
Third, Forced multiplayer grinds my tits…

Things that should be promoted even more:

Those Damned VR headsets!! I would love the kak out of having a set like the Rift….
    Free stuff! -Thanks CDPR
Community modding tools!! Oh dear Loard how beautiful some games look once the community put their hands to it….

Ag nee fork….Really? What’s the point of then buying the game? I only start playing around with XP mods after I’d finished a game, simply to stuff around with, and that only gets done in the SP department, I would be super, no, Extremely cheesed off if that would apply to a multiplayer scenario… I mean why? why would anyone do it?

Nope. Charging $20 for one map and forcing that purchase on to people needs to stop. Optional DLC can stay. Because it’s easy to not buy it, you’re missing nothing.

As much as I love PayDay 2 and how worthwhile most of their DLCs have been. There was one DLC for weapons and mods, which was very cheap. BUT the weapons are still locked behind achievements. So you buy the DLC and then you can’t use the items because they still need to be unlocked. If I have to work that hard to unlock something, it better be free.

I think they are actually underestimating the IQ of gamers… maybe its still the stereotype of a fat dude with pizza all over his face…

What needs to die is this co-op multiplayer online bs. Rather just have a propper MMO or a co-op (not online) or of course the best is just a SP game.
Also Ubisoft needs to die, Loathe them!

There’s more of a move to the so-called free-to-play model. Free game (*cough* demo) with microtransactions. That’s bad, but understandable.
But worse is full priced games with microtransactions (and non-story DLC, or day1 story DLC). That trend needs to stop. Go with the Witcher model instead.

A good trend is Microsoft starting to care about gamers and not just money. Unfortunately, Sony is trending in the opposite direction.

There’s another trend where everyone and their grandma are releasing new consoles, often aimed at being a PC in console form. Stop that. The console market is already saturated.

I’m crazy into Cities: Skyline and also as usual Kerbal Space Program. Must be the unity engine. The modding community on both those is just awesome and insane. The genius creations some have come up with is truly innovative.

Things like always online and always on multiplayer don’t affect me. I don’t have uncapped internet at home so I don’t bother with those type of games. I’m definitely SP 4 life yoh! Day one patches however are a REAL pain. Having to buy extra cap just to start the game I’ve already bought? Not cool. I really miss the days of just buying a game, installing, and playing.

I enjoyed Arkam City so having heard of the new Arkham and how popo it is ( currently before a no doubt massive patch ) because they didn’t care to port / test it on pc format really irks me. First two were a great experience. What happened?

TL;DR = Player created content is cool, forcing online kuk is not.
