Games are awesome; we all think that – which is why we’re here. There can, however, be bits – conscious design choices –  of otherwise great games that annoy you enough to put your right off.

One such thing that drives me right around the bend is unskippable cut-scenes – particularly when they’re right after a checkpoint, in a difficult game , and you’re forced to watch the same waffle over, and over again. The same with games that have hours-long, forced tutorials, treating you like an idiot for the first section of a game.

Another one that gets my goat up? When you’re playing a game, kicking the snot out of some bad guy, but in the very next cutscene it’s the bad guy doing the ass-kicking. Of course, there’ always QTE’s which are seldom done right, and goddamned slow and boring underwater levels that nearly ruin games.

Another one that grinds my gears? When a change in camera perspective changes the direction of control, so mid-jump or mid-climb I have to switch directions. Or when NPC’s walk at a snail’s pace to tell me their life stories, forcing me to amble along with them. Just shut the hell up already.

Now, before I have an aneurysm, I’m going to shut the hell up already and ask you what design elements in games make you want to pull your hair out.

NFS: Most Wanted so glad is was free on PSN and I didn’t waste any cash on it.

Another big piss-off element is game just blatantly ignoring reality, again NFS putting NOS in a Tesla Roadster WTF?!?!!?

I found that GRID 2 took that same approach… I could get a Focus ST faster through a corner sideways than through the actual driving line. Used handbrake in that game more than the actual brake, coz regardless of the car, it was just faster that way

GRID 2 is the most disappointing game of 2013 for me. Don’t get me started. I love Codemasters, but GRID 2 is by far their worst game to date.

I hate it when the 1 difficulty is too easy, but the next one is almost too hard. Or the solution to make the game harder is to make your troops weaker or the enemies stronger instead of them actually being better.

A narrow range in character models for the NPC’s. I hate a populated game with hundreds of identical look people. Like Far Cry 3 – good game, but only a handful of differeny NPC’s. It’s even worse when they all wear the same clothes.

QTE’s that don’t explain themselves well – Tomb Raider

Checkpoint saves only. We’ve been able to save games anywhere since MS-FREAKING-DOS – why stop now?

Non-skippable cut scenes. But even worse than that, non-skippable sequences when starting a game. I’VE SEEN YOUR LOGOS 1,000,000 TIMES – ENOUGH ALREADY, I don’t need to see it every time I start the damn game.

Stupid quests that only exist to make you revisit a map that you’ve already cleared for the sake of padding and do absolutely nothing to advance anything.

Games that only give you the really cool toys 5 minutes before the end of the game so that you can only use them once.

Level caps. If I’ve spent hours doing all the side quests earning extra XP then hit a level cap because balance. Well then why have the damn side quests if I’d hit the level cap without doing any.

There’s more but I’m tired now.

Not making it clear that it’s an enemy re-spawning section. You end up killing dozens of enemies, wasting your ammo and health only to realize that you need to do something else for them to stop re-spawning.

Playing a game in Iron Man mode and moving your supposedly elite unit to flank the enemy with a 90+% chance to hit, with a shotgun, and missing!
Only for another enemy to get a long range, instant kill shot on your unit. Your high rank, but apparently blind soldier.

Day one DLC, Non-skippable cut scenes, check point saves only. The last one really upsets me. There were a few games that I had to stay and play way past the time I needed to go to bed so I can get to a checkpoint and not lose my progress. Dead Space 3 comes to mind.

Bad balance in games. A sniper shot to the chest does almost nothing but a knife to the toe is instant death.
Invisible walls, huge gaps in the story that leaves you with more questions than answers, bad programming where you have to land on the exact pixel or you fall through, BAD PROGRAMMING, Day one patches, escort missions, etc etc etc.

Yet somehow I still play and enjoy most of the games I buy, I’m complicated like that.

Every single game has an annoying thing – lately for me it’s become a bit of a game within a game for me to see how quickly I can find that “one thing” that turns an otherwise great game into a not so great one… It seem particularly prevalent with reboots, things like the last Lara Croft seemed more about how precisely you could mash buttons or jump to exactly the right place than actually trying to solve the puzzles, I remember solving some of the puzzles pretty quickly but lacked the hand eye coordination (for various reasons, some of which were self inflicted by alcohol) to get it exactly right even after multiple retries, and I just couldn’t proceed… the sense of accomplishment when you finally got it right was completely overshadowed by the sense of relief that “thank f(*& that’s over”… Getting stuck in objects (Walls, furniture, boxes, etc) just before your next save point is another one that for some reason I seem to come across often…

WTF take one step forward and they suddenly react. Really one step back you couldn’t here a fricken sniper rifle shooting blanks and now you suddenly can see and hear me.

Mine is one where you shoot a guy multiple times in the neck and he doesn’t even flinch.

Worst in Splinter Cell Blacklist where if an enemy is carrying out certain animations such as reloading or peeking out of cover, they are 90% immune to direct fire.

Being forced to connect to oversea servers just to play a single player game. Playing Diablo 3 with 2 or more seconds of lag while playing in single player mode. Being forced to only play Diablo 3 at 5am just to get the 2 seconds of lag because when ever i wanted to play Diablo 3 single player experience, it was unplayable except for at 5am where i still got 2 seconds of lag from a single player game.

And let me not start on Sim City 5!!!!!

The future of gaming = lag? fuck that. Support DRM-free only.
