FFD: What games have been given a free pass?

In last week’s FFD, somebody brought up a classic game; Altered Beast. Amongst older gamers, Altered Beast is infamous. It’s highly regarded as an arcade classic and it’s something most of us spent way too many 20c pieces on because we could turn into goddamned werewolves and flying dragons and that is awesome.  Pity the game is actually pretty terrible. I played it relatively recently, and it’s a short, broken, janky mess – yet it’s still almost universally adored. Altered Beast has been given a free pass.

What other games, old and new do you think have similarly been granted exemption from harsh critique? Three instantly come to mind, and interestingly, they were all published by Rockstar. GTA IV was universally lauded, heaped with praise. I still can’t figure it out. The game had bad controls, bad shooting, and bad melee combat. That was capped off with bland and clichéd writing and a pointless story.

Another Rockstar published game that got praise for reasons I can’t fathom is L.A Noire. Yes, it had a decent story and some of the most incredible facial capture we’ve seen in games, but it was one of the most boring games to actually play. Move around until your controller buzzes, turn some item around in your hands, interrogate somebody, repeat.

The last Rockstar one? Max Payne 3. It had sublime shooting, but a hackneyed story, unnerving visual aberrations and just wasn’t in the spirit of Max Payne at all. It was 8 hours of shooting gallery. punctuated with stuff I couldn’t care about.

Another one that was critic proof, and this is controversial stuff, is Skyrim. Though I loved the experience, it’s deemed by many to be overrated. It was critically praised despite being a broken mess upon release, and for many, had all the soul of a ginger kid. Same goes for Uncharted 3. I really feel that game was given a free pass by critics after the excellent Uncharted 2. The first half was pretty good, but by the end of it it was a repetitive and mindless corridor shooter.

That’s enough whinging from me though; what games do you think were given a free pass by the press and gamers themselves? Agree with my examples, or do you think I’m a deluded idiot who should be set on fire and has no place writing about games?

Hey, Skyrim was still a decent game upon release. I bought my copy on release day, got home that night and only emerged two days later. I got arrested. My fiancé called the cops when she saw a stranger wandering around the house…

GTAIV “…bad controls, bad shooting, and bad melee combat.”
Really? I didn’t experience that, but then again I played it with a mouse and keyboard 😉
Actually, even with, the melee combat was atrocious, but I thought the rest was fine.

    Dark Souls 2

Seriously, this is nowhere near as great as the original but that is not even the main issue. The blatant graphical downgrade was sleazy and a dick move. I’m a HUUUUGE Souls fan, but c’mon….These okes LIE to your face, and then it’s just cool afterwards. Like eh, You don’t play Souls for the graphics. Bull crap BRAH….I never ever ever got why gamers are just fine with this false advertising…

Ni No Kuni also got a free pass. The graphics and story was AMAZING…but seriously now, the combat system was pretty dull and the pacing was extremely slow..

But it was crap Im mean cmon, nice graphics, but the rest was kinda dull, very much aimed at prepubescent kids.
          And

I dont get the hate for DS2, yes it was as good as the first, but I enjoyed it, wasnt blown away, but enjoyed.
Ok the graphic lie was a douche move, but I looked past that from the beginning, didnt want it to ruin it for me.
My main issue is the bosses unfortunately. They werent nearly as inventive or wow as DS1, it kinds felt like they just threw way too many in and in random places, just “because we are known for boss fights”, rather than place them based on logic or story. Speaking of story I really did hope for something a little more forthcoming compared to DS1, really use the lore instead of hide it.
Wait the more I talk the more I find things wrong with it, Ill stop now. 🙁

LOL not much hate, I love it. Good game, gameplay is so much better. But the story, bosses, music, lore, world was all pretty weak imo….I felt no connection to the world or anything in the game like I did for DS1. But it was good

Yeah when I think back, I was immersed in DS1, really took in the world, for DS2 I was waiting to get immersed, but never quite got there, it was more of the challenge to finish it than the desire.

Yeah, now I think they went completely in the direction of what people think DS is about. They think it’s about dying and the difficulty, and while it is to a degree about that. DS really shone in it’s world and immersion…It’s like they completely ignored that

        July 4, 2014 at 11:39

Yeah the big issue for me was the lack of immersion. Being able to warp from the get go never left you with the dread of being stuck in a place, like Blighttown or the Tomb of Giants for example.

I remember that feeling of getting to the lower bonfire in Blighttown in the swamp, you got Chaos Witch in front of you, Blighttown behind you, totally helpless sensation, thats what was missing, that feeling of oh fuck, what now.

I’m sorry I let you down.

In the beginning I was all, WOAH! This is rad! And then I realised that hunting was pointles, and was like, oh that’s a pity. Missed survival opportunity there. And then I realised that there were only 2 or 3 TINY and easy tombs in the whole game and was like, oh that’s a pity. Still the gameplay is quite fun.

And then her friends just got so super annoying and unreasonable. I mean she’s off running all over the island doing ridiculous things and they’re just holed up together being bitchy about getting stuck on the island. And I wasn’t allowed to shoot them in the face.

And after about half the game I got tired of OMG LARA IS HAVING A HARD TIME! SO MUCH PAIN! We get it. It’s a reboot, grittier etc.

For me, if I just want a game to end so I can move on it’s a not a good game. Most of my friends enjoyed it though so maybe I’m wrong.

They did have to catch a new target market with the very expensive re-boot. I also think they tried to copy the success of Nathan Drake and turn it more into an Action game than a platform puzzle game.

I miss those hard puzzles of the first Tomb Raider.

This one is probably going to cause divided opinions: Guild Wars 2. The only thing there is to do, once you hit lvl 80, is make more lvl 80’s. It’s just so dull, and boring. And the LW content is done in a few hours, and is mostly for those AP. It’s just. There’s so much that it lacks, hardcore content is restricted to 2 encounters, one of which is now pugged and I can pick up any random group 3 or 4 times a day and do that. The dungeons are laughable. The end-game doesn’t exist. It’s basically an over rated show and tell.

I agree. Was a little skeptical after what happened with Wolfenstein(after RTCW was really good), but New Order is, so far, a good return to form for FPS. I do, however, wonder if this is the Bethesda influence(good coherence, actual story, movie like cutscenes).

ps. I used to love the old story driven CoD’s, but the new ones are a crap-on-rails – I wonder how many times I “broke” the last CoD I played just by trying to do the opposite of what they tell me to…

One a side note – I enjoyed Fall 3, but I’m a Fallout fan(starting with Fall 2, then Fall 1), I do however miss the old style of Fallout. Maybe Wasteland 2 will usher in a new era of “isometric” RPG’s.

Agree so much with Skyrim being overrated, I enjoyed my time with it – but the fun came more from exploring the fantastic environment than actual story or gameplay. LA Noire was similar in that it had a fantastic story, but my god so boring to play.

Oh, and Final Fantasy 8 – dull as dishwater story & gameplay is tedious & repetitive before long. Fallout 3 was also pretty soulless.

Thief 4. Appart from the game being really dull, my autosave got corrupted when I got to chapter 6. The game didn’t cater for manual saves, and it didn’t even have a chapter select once you have compleated a chapter. There was no way I would sit through that boring experience again to get to chapter 6 again. I thought the critics were way too kind on that game.

The next Final Fantasy game will be just as over rated.
The name has far exceeded what used to be good story telling in a simple fun universe with no voice acting or 3d cameras.

I enjoyed it, but it feels like it was missing something, i think the combat was kinda boring and simple, but I really got invested in the characters, so I think they did a decent job with that and the story.
They just need to make you really need and want the powers for combat and tactics, not make it optional if you give enough of a fuck to get them.

Bioshock: Infinite seems like it was given a free pass for the first few months and then rage went over 9000. I actually enjoyed it.

Borderlands for me was given a huge free pass. It became mundane after an hour or so of gameplay.

That would easily pass for KOTOR 2.5 for now…

Here’s a videogame character that has never really recovered from the events of the first game, and who would? It makes sense that he would sink even further into depression.
