SUPPLIES!

While everyone seems to be hung up on games like Titanfall, Watch Dogs and Destiny being disappointments – lets turn it around and look at the flipside. Games that ended up being rather pleasant surprises.

One more recent game that instantly comes to mind is Driver: San Francisco. I have little interest in games about cars, I hated the last batch of Driver games and the story seemed to be a tad on the ridiculous side. A guy who’s in a coma and can jump around in to other people’s bodies? What sort of Quantum Leap hokum is this? And yet, it was a rather bloody enjoyable game – one of the last generation’s most underappreciated gems.

Another game that ended up being quite a pleasant surprise for me was Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. at the time I bought it at a little retail PC games shop, I knew nothing about it. I had actually gone out that day to find somebody who was selling Half-Life 2, and I really wanted to get a look at Valve’s new Source engine. They had no stock – but did have VTM: Bloodlines in, and I bought it on a whim purely to gander at Source.

I ended up losing my life to that game for ages, and it still stands as one of my favourite RPG experiences ever. I ended up forgetting about Half-Life 2 and only played it months later.

Tell us: What games have you picked up with little to no pre-loaded information, and ended up loving?

Thinking waaaaayyyy back, Parasite Eve 2. It blew my fragile little mind. Resident Evil 4 had that same impact. I had no idea they had made such a profound change to what I’d come to love about the series, nor did I know I would come to love those changes so much. I killed the PS2 replaying that game.

I also noticed that the scream of that women from the camper van is the same scream that SONY used in the Spiderman movie when the green goblin fakes it in the burning building. Same sound stock library.

That scream in Parasite Eve embedded itself into my brain. Resident Evil is dead to me now that The Last of Us kicked my all time favourite RE4 under the rug.

That scream haunted me for a little while. And yes, The Last of Us turned out to be more than I had expected. It’s currently at #1 for me. There was one specific part where I snuck around, picking off guys one by one. I had the surround sound on full blast, but things were ridiculously quiet. I took out everyone but the one guy who was waiting outside of the building. So I took out my rifle, took aim and pulled the trigger. I’m still cleaning the walls. It sounded like someone literally fired a bfg inside my living room. Everything in that game is fantastic.

Not trying to start a PC vs Consoles debate here, but this is exactly what I love about consoles. I can buy anything that catches me eye without any significant risk, because if it sucks I can instantly sell the thing and recover most of the costs.

Yep it sucks. And it really is a good thing about consoles, the 2nd hand market.
That said I was surprised with Sims3 in the humble bundle and one or two steam special games you buy to demo basically and just grows your library without ever going back to playing them.
Wish there was a legal way to avoid disappointment and find pleasant surprises. 😉

Also what was pretty cool is that the game came on two discs. You could “lend” one to a friend so that you could Lan against each other.

First was better than the second in every way. First was buggy as hell, but I cared enough to finish the game and explore the world. The second wasn’t great for me, I was expecting more.

It was Buggy, I remember before I got the expansion, there was a quest I couldn’t finish (getting water from an oasis) I didn’t have Internet at the time, so getting a patch wasn’t an option… but man… Great Diablo clone.

            September 19, 2014 at 11:57

Haha I remember that quest. It was with the horse, if I’m not mistaken. I managed to do it I think. Damn that game was huge though.

But then an awesome game happened to me. So much so that I will declare the Mass Effect series as the best damn thing to have happened to video games ever!

HR felt a bit too typical to its time for me. The first DX was ground breaking. But HR was great. The boss fights just ruined the game for me since I stealthed all the way through.

Its still in beta, but there’s a sandbox game by the name of “Planet Explorers” which looked ok when I bought it early access and when I started playing it I thought it was rubbish. But boy was I wrong… The solo adventure is not even complete, but it is one of the most deeply gratifying titles I have played in a long time. I mean you can -design- and build your own helicopters or other flying machines.

    It is a real game.

Terraria was one of the biggest surprises for me. I scoffed at anything sanbox related, because they have a tendancy to get boring and dull after an hour or so of game time. Well, 200 hours in, with plans for what I want to build and create on new worlds, I can honestly say it surprised the shit out of me.
