FFD: What’re the scariest games or characters?

It’s very nearly Halloween, which here in South Africa is a mostly meaningless event – but it is a great excuse to dress like an idiot, be scared of things and do terrible, terrible things to pumpkins. Basically, it gives you a licence to be Darryn. In the spirit of All Hallow’s Eve, let’s discuss games and characters that frighten the bejeesus out of you.

I’ve been playing a bit of Outlast, and it’s really quite a damned chilling experience – mostly because you;re in an Asylum with nothing but a video-camera and a few hundred goddamned psychopaths. It creepy, but it’s not entirely scary.

One of the first games to give me the heebie-jeebies was the very first Resident Evil. It was soon after I got my first PlayStation, I was lying on my bed and i started playing. And not too long in to the game, just when turning a corner, a mutant dog jumped through a window and I screamed like a girl.

There’s also, of course, Clive Barker’s Undying, and all of its occult dealings – but the last game that really made me switch the thing off and say “Nope. Not today!” wasn;t a horror game itself – but a mission within the really damned excellent Vampire The Masquerades: Bloodlines. If you’ve played the game, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Tell us though; what games or game characters just creep you the hell out?

No. One thing Jericho had was a great atmosphere. The whole time I played that thing was with the idea this will not end good…

Couldnt agree more. The character designs and the atmosphere is just disturbing to say the least. Couldnt really get into the game though. For some reason Fear 2 was quite scary (The first half) a few years back.

Anyone remember the first time you ran into a Skaarj in Unreal? That was a good build up. You spent a few minutes running around with nothing to see except sounds, shadows & movement out the corner of your eye. Then you head down a passage that turns into a dead end, and when you’re half way back the lights start clicking out one by one…

Dude. In Dead Space 3 there are these Nut Cracker Soldiers. I had a few weeks of kak sleeping so got some sleeping pills from the doc. Apparently a side affect experienced by those with immune systems of Gods sometimes hallucinate when taking them… I did. I woke up and saw a 6ft nut cracker soldier standing in the corner of my room clear as day. Thing was eye balling me. THAT beats clowns… 0-O

The Suffering had me scared shitless back in 2004/5
had to get a friend round to watch me play, so i could finish it.
there was nothing subtle about that game, it was just blatant horror/thriller, none of the psychological bullshit.

nothing else has really come close.
penumbra, dead space, amnesia, nothing else really got me on edge.
really surprised at the lack of Penumbra and Amnesia choices.

Well back in the day Alma (F.E.A.R) made most people sheet their pants, so I would say back then she was the scariest!

But today we dont really get scary characters in video games any more….its sad to be honest…

I would love to see a new F.E.A.R game on the next gen consoles!! Hoping that they will stick to the style that F.E.A.R 1 was made!

I’ll freely admit that I’m 100% whuss when it comes to Horror games.

I couldn’t play Doom 3 or Aliens vs Predator because they were so damn dark with lots of nasty shadows and always something jumping at your face, always with the jumping!

FYI, seriously, I got scared from that animated movie called Beowulf, the monster there gave me frikken nightmares for weeks.

So no, not the best person to ask about horror stuff.

Undying scared the bejesus out of me the first couple of missions, but as soon as you get the big weapons nothing is scary anymore.

Vampire the Masquerade, THAT mission was creepy but not really that scary. You’re a friggan vampire, things are supposed to be afraid of you.

The only other one that I can think of was Call of Cthulu Dark corners of the earth. The part where you had no weapons and had to get away was nerve wrecking.
