FFD: Which great games had the worst sequels?

In the current AAA gaming climate, sequels are something you just have to get used to; they’re considered safe bets. Sometimes though, they’re too safe – barely changing anything from the previous game. Either that or they’ve been handed of to lesser studios and end up being terrible.

You’re probably already thinking “Call of Duty,” but put that out of mind right now. They’re hardly real sequels, and really just more shootiness set in the same universe.

Of course, there’s Dragon Age II, which wasn’t a bad game per se, but just smacked of being a lazy cash grab with recycled environments. Gears of War Judgement and God of War: Ascension both told stories nobody asked for, and Lost Planet 3 was an exercise in stupidity.

Dead Space 3 ditched the scares in favour of all-out-action and the less said about Duke Nukem Forever and Resident Evil 6 the better. Going back some; Deus Ex Invisible War was nonsense for console kid and Star Control 3 made me cry.

So you tell us; what games that you loved had the worst sequels or prequels?

i liked duke nukem forever, i even bought the dlc. i kinda dont know why duke fans didnt like it really, it stayed true to the original games and had the ssame formula, bosses, bad guys and sense of humor. i got the game for 8$ which was well worth it. it took me back to the old days having the flu and my dad watching me play the game laughing at the trip wires killing the enemys

they couldnt though they had started to far back, yah the graphics werent great but the gameplay was still fun. it took them to many years to scrap what they already did to use a newer game engine. plus most of the ps3 games had shit graphics for the first few years because there wasnt really that many game engines out. i use to get pissed off to at every game that wasnt graphical as it should be but once i started playing alot of flop games i found out that after i got passed the point of being mad at there graphics the gameplay is actually pretty fun. thats just my opinion though, i kinda like the fact it looked like the old games. if it had a overhaul update it would of felt like a completely different title.

Fnished it in a day, and could completely ignore your creature. Creature was what made B&W1 so special and unique. Why make that one feature obsolete in the sequel? Why not improve on what made the original so special, instead of turning it into a generic and forgettable RTS.

B&W 1 was so heavily focused on your creature – I felt like it was all about the creature. 2 expanded on cities, armies, ways to win, buildings, resources, environment, god powers, all that. They had to allow you to focus on other things, and making the creature a bit more ‘aware’ (self training) gave you the breathing room for that.

It made it stupid proof. I swear you could let that game play itself. It was basic. It was a generic RTS, without any skill required. And they threw in this creature that just got in the way more than did anything.

Remember those parts of B&W1 where you HAD to use your creature to do stuff if you wanted to beat a level? It had a use. You could train your creature any way you wanted. in 2, its just there.

          • eXpZA

            November 8, 2013 at 11:08

2 definitely had a bias towards winning. Armies would amass on your doorstep and then just… wait… and wait… and maaaaybe they’d attack. I’ll give you credit in saying it’s stupid proof, you could just build an amazing city and before you knew it, everyone just flocked to yours.

Instead of designing the game to have a feasible multiplayer option, they designed the game to have a ‘feasible’ singleplayer option 😛 Instead of building and slowly growing a massive metropolis like you could in all the previous games, you resort to building a little town in a region :'( Then there is the added problem of the broken AI. Also they lied about the always online part being indispensable. I’m sad now 😛

Ok now it just sounds horrible. I think you need to get CitiesXL2011. I prefered that to Simcity 4 anyway. You could actually build proper roads! Had to choose what type of road and when I say choose I dont mean, dirt/street/road/highway. I mean there was something like 12 different types of raods. You can choose how many lanes in each direction etc!

Why must i always have to shut my mouth up for one game series. I WISH saints row was better I wish that I could enjoy it more, but after playing Gta 4 and Gta 5 it just feels like a cheap knockoff.

They are not the same dude. Saints Row does not take itself serious, which is wherein lies its appeal to a huge market. It is an open world REACTION to the seriousness that GTA has always strived for. If you want to compare something, why are you not comparing Red Dead Redemption to GTA? That is a serious game. How can you compare a president in Saint’s Row who can fly around with super powers to the characters in GTA? That’s chalk and cheese. If you are going for a pick up and play open world Saint’s would be my choice, if I want a serious game, GTA. Can’t point at another’s taste and tell them they are wrong. THAT is wrong in itself.

I’ve not even managed to finish a single character (And i’ve made 30 or so over the years) on Nightmare in D2. It’s dull, and uninspiring because you get THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE every time. D3 has more random stuff, and you can’t fuck up and need to reroll a character because of a skill, or incorrect stat distribution. And there was only 1 viable build late game. And only 1 viable item set. Great fun? No. Diablo 3 lets you play the way you want to play. And every playthrough has provided a different experience, even on the same character.

And how can you even compare using time? D3 is a year old, how do you compare a 1 year old game with a 10 year old game, by time alone? That’s just stupid.

          • Wyzak

            November 8, 2013 at 11:14

D3 was way too easy on my normal playthrough, then it was almost fun on nightmare, hell was great fun, inferno was a brick wall. After that I couldn’t stand the idea of having to play 30 odd hours on a new character just to get to the fun hell difficulty again. This has since been improved.

D2 was way more random than D3, the maps were truly random the item drops were truly random etc. In D3 you play the same regurgitated map over and over again with minor changes. As soon as you hit a story line section everything is identical again.

In D2 I couldn’t wait for the next cutscene and every movie was epic. In D3 the story was an epic failure.

That is what we loved about D2. The item and skill grind. There was simply nothing to play for in D3. That Diablo 3 is more fun on consoles is a moot point. Any average action platformer on the console would be infinite times more fun than D3 on PC. Which is essentially what D3 is.

D2 was never as flawed as D3 thanks to the RMAH and always-online requirements. D3 also took away most of the customization options which truly made your character unique and personal.

I like both for different reasons, Bioshock for the atmosphere and creepiness of Rapture, also Andrew Ryan is like the coolest villian ever. And Infinite because I felt in touch with the story, I felt bad for the characters at times and the ending completely blew my mind. I had to run through again just to understand wtf just happened.

    2. Heroes of Might & Magic after #3. Same thing.
    3. The Sims after #0. You know. 😉 #troll

Nah, it lost the charm and humour and came off as trying too hard.

I tried several times, but could not be bothered to finish it. Engage the interest it did not

My breaking point came when I first encountered that stupid fake lizards.

Played the PvP melee quite a lot though.

yeah, the melee combat was ok.

Hmm, play Starcon2 again. BUT I want the one without the patch, where I sell my landers on earth to fully upgrade my mother ship at the start of the game, because it is too painful to have such a slow and ponderous ship at the start.

Star Control 3 for sure, though I still played it through to the finish. Star Control 2 is still probably my all time favourite game overall!

Ultima 8 was a massive screw-up after the glory of 7: shocking combat system, rubbish platforming elements etc.

Quest for Glory 4 had a completely broken combat system, and I never actually finished it.

Wing Commander Privateer 2 did not approach the greatness of the original in any way, although it wasn’t completely awful.

Diablo 3 was a shocker – it took Blizzard years to release a buggy POS that was little more than a reskin of Diablo 2?

Simcity (latest one) – another bludgeoning of a beloved franchise, with less space to build and crummy online “features”.

DotA 2 – A very underwhelming “modernising” of the original, complete with many of its inherent flaws. I can’t fathom how this game averaged a rating of 90 on MetaCritic. It’s great for a little nostalgia trip, but League of Legends blows it away IMO.

Need for Speed 2, only do need to be mechanic to understand most features, you have a garage with hundred licensed cars to choose from, but with no means generate the money to upgrade the cars in the story.

There was no cash in Need for Speed 2. You selected your car of choice and track and drove. Are you thinking of Need for Speed Underground perhaps?

but Modern Warfare 3 killed the fast FPS genre.

Do what I do and tell people you bought it for the multiplayer! Also, I like Ghosts so far. But the story feels super rushed! Their creative team must suck so hard. Because there’s so much they couldv’e done to make it an awesome story!

Well anyone who plays any Call of Duty for the single player is just silly.
so yeah, i dont even see it as a singleplayer game, and tbh, sofar i think even MW3 has a better multiplayer than Ghosts.

the mechanics change making all SMGs feel like pea shooters and rifles totally useless at close range.
the stupid currency thing to unlock stuff is just stupid.
red dot site does absaloutely nothing.
steady aim is way too accurate, totally removes the need to scope.
not that youd want to scope anyway since they “fixed” the no scope “exploit” (such bullshit)

And i just really dont like the handling changes theyve made, in MW1 and MW2 i could reflex headshot anything on the map, but MW3 and Ghosts, cant shoot for shit. even with the mouse accelleration fix in notepad.

Yeah must agree on the currency (squad points) thing. It feels like I’m buying all my perks and not earning it. SMG’s feel super weak as well! I find assualt rifles my go to weapon so far. And they still didn’t remove the one hit kill from knives! Goddam I hate that!

But have you seen that thing (have no idea what it is called) when the entire map gets destroyed! That is awesome dude! Everything looks different!

I am quite glad they removed quick scoping. Well it’s not entirely gone, just more difficult.
At first I didn’t like the maps, but Im getting used to it. Actually quite like it now.

im struggling with the maps, maybe its just because im struggling to pick up new maps after playing the same ones for years, but i find theres too many blind spots and access points, theres no real way to cover all the corners efficiently, and theres too much large cover and not enough small cover.

Ive always been a fan of one hit knives, i used to run my tac knife and throwing knife all day in the previous games.
i quite like the buff to the perks if you remove your gun, makes for a proper knife class, can literally have ALL the perks.
its the only thing that really excites me about this game, the knife class, its the only thing that makes me want to level, so i can get more perks and set a proper class up with specialist kill streaks

            November 11, 2013 at 10:43

The maps are much larger! And I agree with no real cover! But that makes it more tactical in my opinion. You cant just run and expect someone to be somewhere, you need to slowly sneak and listen for footsteps! I actually didn’t know about the knife class! Will give it a go! Also the marksman class is pretty sick!

ME3. A lot of what I enjoyed in the series was sacrificed or changed. A thing I learned from Bioware is when you’re putting in something new, you’re going to sacrifice something. And that for me was the auto-dialogue that was heavily relied on, that took away player interactivity in conversations. And interactive conversations were the main selling point fot me, and it infuriated me at times when Shepard would say something when I would wish Bioware gave me an option to select dialogue like they did in early games. And I didn’t like much of the limited dialogue that was offered either, some lines were same as the only difference would be if you shouted it or not, and most of it wasn’t that compelling either. The interactive dialogue wasn’t that memorable as too much effort was put into auto-dialogue. I just hope in the future, they give us more interactivity in the dialogue in the future.

I won’t mention the ending cause I think everyone gets the idea. I didn’t enjoy the combat that much even though it was more expanded, it was great to have more choice in weapons to use and abilities especially when not playing as a soldier as I would play a sentinel using a assault rifle. James Vega should have had a better introduction for him being mandatory to have on the ship, instead it played out more like “This is James, get used to him”.
