FFXIV TV spot shows running and fighting

I give up on Square Enix.  They might create awesome games that I love, and sometimes hate, but they have no idea who their target audience actually is.  Why do people love the Final Fantasy franchise, why would they love the MMO?  I can tell you now, it’s not for the fighting.

I thoroughly enjoyed the FFXIV: A Realm Reborn beta.  It’s relaunching soon, and I’m excited to get back in there and run around.  Really, I am.  The game officially launches at the end of the month, and they have started advertising it on TV in Japan.  Now, maybe the Japanese audience is different, but I doubt this video will convince them to play, unless they recognize the music.

Here is the TV spot:

Yup, it really is primarily running, either on your own or upon a Chocobo, or fighting.  Lots and lots of fighting.  What about the awesome world they built?  Or the beautiful cut scenes?  There is so much more to the game than running and fighting, it makes me sad that Square Enix thinks that they can pick up more players this way.

It’s not a bad advert, I think it is sufficient for a Tv Spot, but you don’t really get a feel for the game’s many other features, plus the Theme Song rocks

The origin of the name comes from “Earth” following the theme of environmentalism and gaia throughout the game.

I hope you’ve prepped your mancave with the necessary supplies. I have stocked up on most of the essentials, I may not have to leave my house at all until beta ends!

I would love to play the beta this weekend but with a 7.7GB download on a 1mb line that at max download is 0.7mb/s and a house mate that downloads series unannounced… it’s just not going to happen for me… 🙁

Take my life, I dont need it that much anyway, real life interaction with people is so overrated.

This trailer fosters the spirit of adventure. It’s a great theme for an MMO to advertise.

If that’s a groan of discomfort, you should have seen the live-action UK advert they did. That was a bit cringe-inducing.

I used to be a huge Squaresoft fan, and even a huge Enix fan, surely the two together should have led to INCREDIBLE GAMES! I mean what the fruit-sucking cactaur is this?

I’m still a fan, but man have they made some bad decisions. All The Bravest was a disaster. FFXIV 1.0 was also a disaster. The Last Remnant was mediocre. At the same time they have still released some brilliant games, and have a lot of promising titles on the horizon. The KH series, FFXI and FFXII were hugely successful, and FFXII remains one of my favourite FF’s to this day (after trudging through it initially).

FFXIII took a lot of effort to love, like a red-headed stepchild, but at the end of the day, the combat system had its merits, and the story was better than the average JRPG on the market. The lore itself was the most polished aspect, but they failed to convey the lore properly within the context of the game’s unfolding story. If FFXIII hadn’t been an FF title, it would have gained better fan reception than it had.

A lot of the SE hate is misguided. Sure, FFXIII was a disappointment to most, and FFXII was “different” – but they don’t deserve all this criticism. Square Enix’s focus on shoddy mobile ports and spinoffs (that cost R150) are what deserve our ire. But who can blame publishers for moving to the mobile market when that’s where the money is?

If anyone’s playing this, I’m on Ragnarok [Legacy] if you want to group up, or join a casual Free Company. Character rename pending.
