FIFA 14 face scanning technology is mind blowing

All the regulars by now know I’m a little bit of a Liverpool fanatic so when this video of the Liverpool squad being head scanned into FIFA 14 arrived I knew I had to get it up onto the site.

But then I started watching it and was blown away by the amount of effort that goes into each and every head scan that exists in FIFA 14.

The players are put into a capture booth where 18 HD cameras surround them and the pictures are then taken. The images are then processed by the machine to 3D model the face after which they are touched up to ensure the colours are as good as possible and then the wireframe enables emotions to be added.

It really is quite something and even more surprising is that they don’t get the players to come to their studio but rather this is a mobile solution that they can simply unpack and setup where ever they go. Something which is a necessity when it comes to high paid sports stars who can’t just take a few days off to come play in Vancouver.

Even the none sporting fans out there have to be impressed with this tech.

As a big footie fan, that is really cool! Except for the Liverpool part…. xD
In all seriousness, I got a feeling we can expect something pretty impressive from Fifa 14.

It’s because of the Liverpool part that you can expect something impressive 😉

I really do hope so. The last Fifa I have is 11. Time for an upgrade me thinks.

Saw this yesterday on the Liverpool site. Too bad they’ve dropped the much better PES but this is awesome technology.

What I’d like to know is how many teams do they really scan in? Like do they go around the world scanning every team into the game, or do they only do it for the big teams? And will the new 13/14 season kits be present for this game?

The new kits are always available on the new Fifa game, that is probably why the game is only out close to end of September. The transfer window only shuts 31 August, so they take the extra time to make sure that when they release they have all the transfers at the right clubs and with the right kits!!
They scanned Liverpool because they have a new 3 year agreement with EA, when visiting their site after a game there is actually EA stats on passes and shots on goal and more in the same manner as it is in the Fifa games which is pretty awesome…
So not all teams will be done like this, but I think the big clubs will be done like this!! EA is also doing the game stats for the Barclays channel, the one we get on Supersport 3!!

Alright, cool. At least now I can sleep with that in mind. I wonder though, how long until every single club in the world gets this kind of treatment. Because, I know I’m not the only one who looks in disgust when not every player looks like their real-life counterpart. Kudos for answering !

I’m sure EA would love to do this for every club but obviously for financial reasons it just isn’t possible.. but as time goes on more and more players will be scanned and then even if they move I’m sure their scan will go with them.

And as the technology becomes cheaper it may become a lot more common in all leagues

That’s what I was thinking about. Hopefully in the near future every league will have like an in-studio scanning booth for every club in the world. I guess until then we’ll just have to enjoy what we have.
