Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s combat will feature “dramatic changes”

FINAL FANTASY POUT

Final Fantasy games from the retro and PlayStation One eras had a pretty much standard setup for combat. The ol’ Active Time Battle system had players charging up their turns and then selecting from a wide variety of attacks, summons and limit breaks. And that’s a system which still works today.

So hard luck if you’ve been hoping that the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Remake would keep that old-school gameplay intact, as it’ll be ditching that system for something else entirely, as game director Tetsuya Nomura spoke about “dramatic changes” to Official PlayStation Magazine:

And of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable.

So what’s Nomura thinking of basing the Final Fantasy 7 Remake combat on? If you said Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, you wouldn’t be too far off.

The cult classic 2005 CGI film that Nomura also directed, had a more fantastical tone when it came to battles, including one epic battle between Cloud and Sephiroth that almost destroyed Midgar. It also had a rather ace guitar solo, yes it did.

And according to Nomura, that film will serve as a visual and technical inspiration for the remake. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake team won’t make use of the same technology from that flick however, as Nomura explained that he and his team “don’t intend on utilising the 3D models of Advent Children as is because, well, it’s a different technology, and it’s actually been almost ten years since Advent Children was first released.”

Look, if the Final Fantasy 7 Remake has more of a Zero Crisis or Dissidia feel, then I’m 100% behind that. Just for the love of Materia, don’t give it the Final Fantasy XIII battle system. Not even Final Fantasy 7 fans deserve to be treated like that.

  1. They should give it the FFXIII battle system, and Spirit’s Within was way better than Advent Children.

I hope Lightning cameos in it too. She’d (or he, I can’t really tell) at least make Cloud interesting.

If anything, it could be like something close to FFX-2’s combat with FF13 animations and movements.

As long as it stays turn based I will be happy, any of this current active button massing crap and I will load up my 1997 Ps1 disk with hooves for hands and enjoy that much much more.

Exactly. Turn-based was awesome. No rush to fight. You could take your time and strategically make moves. I think they should create an option to use turn-based fighting on or off and use whatever new dramatic fighting mechanic they want.

I dont mind the dramatic battles, but please oh please dont let us fly around and fight…. and please let the camera angles be done right so that we can actually see whats going on during the fight cause sometimes these directors make fight scenes so rediculously crazy that you cant follow the fight properly with all its camera shake etc etc

My excitement for this remake has just dropped significantly. It’s like this company does everything it can to mess up the perfect RPG formula it had.

The reason fans were clamoring for a remake is because it’s one of the more iconic FF games with its story and world but also because it would take us back to a time in gaming that for many of us was perfect. The main reason for it being so perfect is the battle systems and the fact that they actually required skill, patience and every character in the party meant something in battle and had a different function and playing with each one made you care that much more about them.

To hear that they are planning to change it dramatically i.e. probably make it more in line with current RPGs is terrible mostly because Square trying anything new in its FF games has for the most part fallen flat. So I don’t have any faith in what they are concocting. My excitement was based on the fact that the game would play how I remember it.

You had one job Square! One damn job!

(I am secretly hoping what they do have planned blows us all away and makes the game even better)
