Final Fantasy 7’s remake won’t be the same

FF7remake

Final Fantasy 7 is finally being remade after years of begging by fans. I’m deliriously happy about it – not because I have extreme nostalgic ties to the game, or that I really, really, really want to replay the RPG. Mostly, I’m happy because fans who’ve been begging for it will finally shut the hell up. Oh, except for the purists. Because this remake won’t be exactly the same game they’ve played a hundred times already.

Speaking to Famitsu and to Dengeki Online (via Kotaku) producer Tetsuya Nomura said that the game won’t be a 1:1 simple remake.

“I can’t get go into details,” Nomura said, “but this is not a simple remake. Let’s say for argument’s sake that we only pretty up the graphics for current gen hardware, I don’t think that would surpass the original version.”

It’s not going to be a mere cosmetic upgrade – so it’ll be getting improved battle systems, audio, graphics, evolved and mayhaps more modern gameplay systems.

“The original version is a game that came out in 1997, and if you look at it today, you can feel how dated the graphics and the game system are,” Nomura told Famitsu. “However, that’s also part of Final Fantasy VII.”

“We haven’t shown any gameplay yet, but since we’re updating them quite a bit, please look forward to that,” Nomura told Dengeki Online.

There may even be some story changes, with some arcs being fleshed out.

“So,” Nomura told Famitsu, “if you are going to do a full remake, you have to take a different approach and make something that suits the times.”

This is dangerous territory, if you ask me. While fans have been clamouring for a remake for forever, they’re such a rabid bunch that if anything looks or feels out of place they will set the world on fire. Me? I’d much rather have a proper remake of the superior, but not quite as well loved Final Fantasy VI. That game got a remake of sorts for mobile platforms, but is frankly terrible.

Oh, and because fans of videogames on the internet are never happy about anything, there’s actually a petition for Square to remake Final Fantasy VI instead.  Yes, really.

“It is unfair that Final Fantasy VII has a remastering but Final Fantasy VI did not have a good remake,” the petition sates, “so by this petition you are asked to Square Enix to create a remake of Final Fantasy 6 if you could have 3D graphics as other fantasy end of this generation and some extra bonus.”

Here’s that trailer again.

Frankly speaking, good. FF 7’s overall story and script was by NO means amazing. The characters and the sub-plots within the overall story is what always stood out for me. The moment to moment action and tales made the game memorable, but I say, let them change what they think should be changed. It could do with a ton tweaks. I mean, they can’t make Cloud any worse of a character than he already is.

Some of the dialogue did feel forced or way too literally translated. So I don’t mind these changes either.

I think small changes are needed. if you want it unchanged play the original (for the purest)

I think it’s a good idea. Not sure I would pay R900 for the thing though.

If they change the battle system to be more in line with the recent battle systems they have used such as in FF13, so help me! I want to control all my damn characters again! It would do Square good to go back to its turn-based roots. That’s half the reason fans have wanted this game remade for so long. To go back to a time of traditional Square Enix RPG exploring and battling but having it look mind blowing amazing with the graphics of today. World Map, Limit Breaks, epic materia combos and Knights of The Round summon in HD people!!!

The story of FF7 is actually fantastic. It touches on every single human emotion and experience. No single plot twist affected me as much as the one in this game. I’m cool with them expanding the story of characters and incorporating plots that have come up in the many sequels and prequels. If they deviate too much from the original I will be one of those pissed off fans. Fans have wanted a Final Fantasy VII 1.1 experience, not a 2.0 experience.

(P.S. FF8 is the superior PSX FF and deserves to be remade just as much)
