Final Fantasy IX is coming to PC and Mobile soon, and with some modern features too

When it comes to choosing my favourite Final Fantasy title, there really is no contest. VII was the first I ever played, and as a result, holds a really special place in my heart. Choosing my second favourite title however, is a bit of a dilemma for me. The entire franchise is filled with many gems, and trying to decide which one of them deserves runner up in my personal hall of fame is nothing short of impossible.  There’s no doubt about it though, IX is certainly a hot contender!

Sadly, it’s one of the Final Fantasy games that has been overlooked by many. Why? Simply because it released at a weird time. Final Fantasy IX launched on the PlayStation 1 in the various regions back in 2000. There was nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that it was released after the launch of the PlayStation 2.

Though it still sold rather well (a cool 5 million copies), it’s never been held in quite as high esteem as its predecessors, VII and VIII. This, I firmly believe, is because many overlooked IX in favour of their shiny new PlayStation 2 consoles. That, and many weren’t a fan of the “look” the game held.

I can’t blame people entirely, because the graphical jump from VII to VIII was impressive. Blocky characters became almost lifelike. The jump from that to something far more cartoony in IX just didn’t sit well with many.

It really is a darn shame, because Final Fantasy IX truly is a fantastic title, one of the best in my opinion, and one that I strongly feel should be experienced by many. The only reason people couldn’t go back to play it was because it was a PlayStation 1 exclusive, and has been for the past 15 years. Thankfully, that’s all going to change, as Final Fantasy IX will be coming to both Steam and Mobile platforms (via VG247):

Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe have kidnapped Princess Garnet, the heir of Alexandria. To their surprise, however, the princess herself yearned to escape the castle.

Through a series of unusual circumstances, she and her personal guard, Steiner, fall in with Zidane and set out on an incredible journey. Meeting unforgettable characters like Vivi and Quina along the way, they learn about themselves, the secrets of the Crystal, and a malevolent force that threatens to destroy their world.

Final Fantasy IX will ship with the following new features:

  • Achievements
  • Seven game boosters including high speed and no encounter modes.
  • Autosave
  • High-definition movies and character models.

As much as I rave about the game, I can’t deny that some of its random encounters are stupidly annoying. Thankfully, they can now be avoided entirely now if desired, or at least sped up.

Other than that criticism, it really is a title well worth experiencing. As a matter of fact, I played it just last year, and I really think it’s still something everybody should play! Unfortunately, there is no release date just yet, other than “early 2016”.

I had this theory that the first FF a person plays is usually their favorite FF.

Sometimes it is. The nostalgia and romance factor with your entry into a franchise.

Aries dying was what hooked me on FF7. Never played a RPG where a lead character dies like that.

lol It was very Indie in its day. It never immersed me like Star Strek did. Overrated and Im amazed the new generation are jumping all over it even tho they were born 20 years after the first movie lol

            Hype train.

I can confirm my head is hard enough to crack a windscreen quite badly. Without a scratch to me. Although it took a while to wash the glass out of my hair.

It was more of a modern take on the original 8-bit sprites with big heads. His vision was to bring back the hi-fantasy of the first 6 games. Kind of like a Disk World.
