Don’t get me wrong, I’m exceptionally excited for the Final Fantasy VII remake (yes, even though it will be a multi-part series), but I’ve been dying, dying I tell you, for Square Enix to give Final Fantasy VI that sort of attention for a long time now. That title came out over twenty years ago (way back in 1994) on the SNES, and even today, remains one of my favourite games from the entire franchise.
Unfortunately, with Square pouring all their resources into the VII remake, it’s unlikely that my beloved title before it will see any sort of rebirth, at least not for another decade or two. The best I can hope for in the meantime, is a port of sorts, which just so happens to be a thing. Next week, on December the 16th, Final Fantasy VI will be launching on Steam (via PC Gamer):
The War of Magi left little but ashes and misery in its wake. Even magic itself had vanished from the world. Now, a thousand years later, humankind has remade the world through the power of iron, gunpowder, steam engines, and other machines and technologies.
But there is one who possesses the lost power of magic–a young girl name Terra whom the evil Empire has kept enslaved in an effort to harness her power as weapon. This leads to a fateful meeting between Terra and a young man named Locke. Their harrowing escape from the Empire’s clutches sets in motion a series of events that touches countless lives and leads to one inevitable conclusion.
Forget Sephiroth, Ultimecia, Kuja, and any other Final Fantasy antagonist you may think is the vilest villain in existence. None of them come close, not even one bit, to Kefka, who is by far the biggest bastard in the Final Fantasy line-up (in my opinion).
The same can be said for the heroes – Terra, Locke, Saban, Celes, Cyan, and many more – are incredibly memorable. Heck, Final Fantasy VI even has a playable Moogle, and that to me, is a win all on its own.
There is no pricing yet, but based on the cost of previous Final Fantasy titles (on Steam), you can expect to pay about R169 for the game when it launches next week. Seriously, whether you are a veteran, or new to the franchise, I can’t recommend VI enough. It is definitely a tale well worth playing!

So it might mean that the list of titles on the Steam Database that was leaked yesterday might hold some truth to it. Final Fantasy VI was amongst the titles mentioned. Along with FFX Remaster and HL3.
