Final Fantasy VII will be three games

Final Fantasy XV might be getting most of the spotlight this month, but there’s also the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Remake that can’t be ignored. And it’s not going to be, with the teaser for the content promising some new information on a game we haven’t seen for months. A game which might actually end up being three.

The digital version of Game Informer’s April issue is out already and most of it has been pillaged for information and dumped on the internet. Aside from a whole host of Final Fantasy XV story information, the issue also detailed the plans Square Enix has for the Final Fantasy VII Remake. Previously we heard that the publisher was planning to break up the game in an episodic form, and that’s still true. But instead of a handful of small episodes, the VII Remake will be three massive games.

Akin to the strategy used for Final Fantasy XIII, The VII Remake will probably be a trilogy of big games that last around 40 hours each. That sounds like far more than the original, which is why new content isn’t off the table. This was previously hinted at too, but Kitase, Nomura, and Nojima (having worked on the original) feel that they’re able to make changes that will resonate nicely with fans. That’s playing with some internet fire, but it could certainly work out.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is meant to have a much shorter development cycle than XV, and is expected to debut sometime this year. Well, at least the first part.

You can trust them to split games more than Peter Jackson did with the Hobbit. DLC is a dirty word, Chopping games up is something new.

Don’t know, I’ve been really happy with the way they’re handling FF XV, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to FF7R…for now.

So basically their are staying true to their original game but they are charging “tripple” for the game. Also note that no one said each episode will cost AAA prices.

Well, it was still one game split on multiple discs lol We will see what they’re gonna do. It’s way to early now, but the fact that they’re looking at XIII as a model is a good thing for me. 3 full and whole games sounds awesome.

Yeah agree, too early to start flinging poo about paying 3 times for a thing

To be fair: The game probably also cost/costs way, way more than triple the amount of the original game to produce. Game development of AAA titles has just gotten really, really expensive these days, which is a problem, since consumers just aren’t willing to pay more money for games than they used to, while at the same time expecting the games to be of a way higher quality and fidelity. That is the sole reason publishers have to resort to DLC and episodic releases in the first place. They also need to sell way more games than in the past to even make a game lucrative.

There were 3 discs on the PSX version of the game.
Disc 1: Midgar -> Forgotten Capital
Disc 2: Forgotten Capital pt. 2 -> Shinra Building
      Disc 3: Northern Crater

It’s worth noting that Disc 3 didn’t actually contain much new gameplay besides the final boss.

I’m so worried about the combat in this game. Playing the XV demo solidly convinced me I wont be buying the game. If I wanted to play Darksiders with worse combat I would.

At least the new Star Ocean look cool

Cloud said it best in the gameplay trailer: “Not interested”

Breaking up experience, fluidity & immersion for FFVII is unacceptable. Waiting for the full disc release.

Everyone should actually see the interview Kitase did with Game Informer for themselves before judging. He stated that “one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game”, and that game was 70+ Hours in it’s entirety which would be well worth the $60 price per part.
