Final Fantasy XIII PC port is abysmal

Lightning sigh

Final Fantasy XIII was, subjectively, of course, one of the worst Final Fantasy titles to be released. However, if you pushed through and played it to the end of the trilogy, it somehow came together and became… okay. Some might even say good. PC gamers are finally getting their chance to play it, and Square Enix has somehow managed to make the game even worse.

To start with, it should be clear that this four-year-old game was not optimized for PCs – it requires 60 GB of space to install. Yes, 60 GB – that’s bigger than any of the characters’ personalities, combined. But it goes even more downhill from there.

The customization options for the PC port are extremely wanting. Here’s the screen cap (thanks Gamespot):

FFXIII options

Screen resolution is locked to 720p and some on the Steam Forum are citing framerate issues – the game often struggles to maintain even 25 fps. Without any graphical settings to tweak performance, the game really struggles to give the same experience that it did on console.

Oh, and hitting ESC completely quits the game without any warnings or pop-ups. Yup, ESC and you’re back to staring at Steam.

Notable PC port fixer, Peter ‘Durante’ Thoman is attempting to improve the game. As the guy who made the terrifyingly bad Dark Souls PC port something playable, I’m sure he can bring the lightning to FFXIII. As great as it is that he is working to fix these awful ports, his hard work wouldn’t be necessary if Square Enix actually just did what they were supposed to.

Are you sighing more than Lightning now? Was this a port you were anticipating, or was this an iteration in the franchise that was below PC master race standards?

Good point. The westernisation of these JRPGs SUCK.

As for the end THEME TUNE by that RnB chick.

I remember the developers being asked in an english press meeting if the Japanese Audio would be included. They laughed there asses off. They did not understand why we would want that.

Meanwhile their damage control stated that there was no room on the disk.

While Lost odyssey went and included 5 languages in the game.

What was that chiks name who did the theme tune again?

Eyes on Me will always be the best.

No clue. The english voice acting kills.
But my 360 version has nothing else so I am stuck with it.

The only perfect voice is Serah in Lightning returns. Me gusta…

Serah Farron voice was the best. Infamous: First Light Being her latest.

Laura Bailey (Serah) and Troy Baker (Snow)

NEED TO MAKE LITTLE VOICE ACTING BABIES.

They are always together in the best AAA games.

Off topic – playing the last of us on ps3, great game, great graphics, however honestly ff13 beats it hands down on the graphics. I expected more since the hype was so explosive about Tlou being the best looking game on ps3….

Durante did some amazing work already. People running at 15k res using GeFoSaTo. Run it at 4k and downscale to 1080.

Very disappointing. I was willing to give the game the benefit of the doubt and play it. But nothing puts me off more than a bad port. Sigh…

After playing the snoozy grind-fest that is FF8 I have no interest in this. I can finally say I’ve played one, and I don’t want to play another.

The 60gb isn’t really all that bad, it’s the entire trilogy isn’t it? If they gave you the option to take out the cut scenes it would probably be around 3gb to dl 😉

Its only XIII not the trilogy. But includes multilanguage voice acting which is pretty intense along with 1080P cutscenes.

I can’t remember a single SE PC port that was even ok. One or two were playable but their PC ports have always been a “Made in China” copy of the original game.
