Final Fantasy XIV patch gives you a house

Ffxiv house

I really enjoyed my brief time playing Final Fantasy XIV – it’s one of those games I really need the time to get back into. However, it’s already getting its first major patch, one that will let you get land and a home.

Okay, let’s be clear, as an individual, you will not be able to get a house. However, as a free company, you can. There are plans to allow for individual housing in future patches, but at this point it is purely for free companies. In the official patch announcement, Square Enix explains:

In order to acquire a house, players must first raise the rank of their free company and obtain a Land Acquisition entitlement.

Residential districts are being established in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania and Ul’dah. However acquiring a house is a multi-phase experience. Land must be purchased by auction, followed by a house permit that can be purchased from a vendor NPC. The house can then be built, and fully customized with unique exteriors, outdoor furnishings and interior decoration. It’s sort of like the Sims, I suppose, as you can place all kinds of lamps, plants, wall mountings and other decorative items to suit your company’s aesthetic.

In essence, the goal of this patch is to give free companies a base of operations to call their home. Future planned additions to the housing system are:

  • A crafting workshop where players can build vehicles such as airships.
  • An orchestrion to change the music played inside houses.
  • A chocobo stable to raise chocobos.
  • Mannequins that can be dressed with player gear.
  • A bulletin board that can be place inside the house.

Okay, I must be out of touch with MMORPGs. I really like the planned chocobo stables, that sounds cool. I’m not sure that houses need a change of music, though, or mannequins wearing my gear. That just seems a bit strange, and useless. But hey, I suppose it takes all types to play these games, and to keep everyone satisfied you’re going to need some varied (and weird) features.

Are you still playing FFXIV? Are you excited to get a house to call your own, or are you too busy wandering off, exploring Eorzea?

I had a cool house mod in Oblivion with tons of mannequins for displaying all the armour sets & weapons I collected. It was quite fun walking through it & seeing all of them. Almost like a museum.

Great, you you get to walk around staring at hot Playboy bunnies, but can’t do anything about it!

No, you get to stare at an empty mansion until you buy the playmate DLC. And there is this contraption apparently that lets you do something about it. Ask Darryn, he’ll probably know more about it.

To be fair. I dressed up all my dolls in Skyrim. Because armour in Skyrim looked SICK. I also hung up my favorite awesome weapons, etc. Never underestimate how much we love making our houses look pretty in games. Because, come on, who has a missus that is going to let them put a mannequin with a full suit of armour in the living room? 😛

*Edit: I just read all the other Skyrim and Oblivion references to this experience. Clearly I’m not alone in this desire to put artefacts of war in my house. 🙂

One of those small additions that World of Warcraft could have adopted years ago. I never understood why Blizzard fought tooth and nail against player housing. It just adds something personal to what is already a very impersonal genre – sure you can customise your avatar but if you have no roots in that world other than how many fetch quests you suffered through then Houston we have a problem.

I like that Final Fantasy has done this, kudos Squeeeeenix – now just find your mojo and make good RPGs again.
