Listen, no one likes DRM. Having not so invisible digital walls that either slow games own or worse, prevent you from playing games you’ve spent good money on is just a blight on modern gaming. If you’re feeling truly cynical, you could probably lump Uplay into the same bracket – with Ubisoft’s own digital distribution service and platform acting as a really intrusive system for game that you don’t even buy through it. But finally Ubisoft are listening to some of the extremely justified criticism.
Uplay currently has a massive update in public testing, which soon make it out for everyone still struggling with the digital platform. Some fancy UI upgrades and rather useful download toolbars aside, the update is set to fix one of the most glaring problems with Uplay – the way the service worms its way into the launching of games bought on other platforms. For instance, in the past if you launched a Ubisoft game via Steam it would automatically boot up Uplay, force you to sit and stare at it for a bit while it figured out what was happening, and then eventually launch your game.
It was slow, horrible and frankly intrusive. But it’s now changing. When launching a game outside of Uplay now, it will instead very nearly skip launching the Uplay client itself in the middle of proceedings. Uplay will instead launch in the background, linking you to cloud saves and achievements while you’re staring at publisher and studio logos. It’s more streamlined, and quite frankly something that should been implemented ages ago.
The update also brings some small changes to the way you install games from physical media, the news feed you never look at and achievements you probably never earn. Honestly, it’s just the less intrusive nature of Uplay that has me jumping for joy. The less I need to really use of it, the better.

Will games auto update when you launch uplay? Or does it still only realize that there’s an update when you launch the game?

Is it still a requirement to install uPlay on my PC in order to play Ubisoft games?
Yes?
Then it’s still the same level of intrusive it was before I read this article.
