Firefall from Red 5 Studios free for everyone

Maybe you’ve heard of this game, maybe you haven’t. It’s an MMO shooter from Red 5 Studio, which is headed by Mark Kern. You know Mark! Mark is the former team lead for World of Warcraft, so it’s safe to say he knows his way around an MMO.

Firefall is set to explode the internet in late 2011, but the interesting news is that it’s free to play and free to download. Yes, free to download – meaning that you’ll be able to play the game for free forever from day one. Naturally, the turnover from the game will be generated through micro-transactions from items for players’ characters. Of course, seasoned MMO players are probably hearing alarm bells at this point: micro-transactions for items can potentially break the balance of gameplay, with the more cash spent on a particular character resulting in that character becoming more powerful. Kern is aware of this and has said that this won’t be the case at all. How? We’ll have to wait and see for now.

Free to download? Check. Free to play? Check. Poor people won’t get their asses handed to them by other players with too much money to spend on beefing their characters? Check! Sounds almost too good to be true.
