Firmware 2.40 issues

40 second read
30

The Internet is exploding at the moment with people complaining about how slow PSN has become, the fact that they can’t get the new firmware version and some of the people who have the version are now complaining that it is making their PS3’s crash…

My personal recommendation… unplug the network cable and try again in a few hours when the network is no longer completely congested.

We always want it first but really it’s not worth getting worked up about.

[UPDATE] Scratch that… Ver 2.40 is no longer available. It seems the issues were WAY bigger than was being reported and this path has in fact caused huge problems all over.

So close yet so far….

Phew, mine survived that initial “fingers crossed for first boot-up” phase. Hope they sort it out soon. With 2.4 being pulled, I wonder if your PS will want to revert back to the previous firmware if you connect it now. Hmmm

Updated mine yesterday. Seems ok. But have not played any games on it… (blame battlefield!)

Ouch! What about the people already stuck with 2.40? Can the downgrade?

The MAJORITY of people who have upgrade are not having problems and the biggest problem is XMB not loading after the install. This can be fixed with a HDD reformat. So in other words, if you have installed it and did not encounter anything yet, you are safe.

To put your mind at ease the amount of Ps3 users that have confirmed that firmware 2.40 is working out ways the problematic ones.

This is a quote from Jeff Rubenstein on the PS Blog “We have received no reports of hardware issues following a successful install.”

Basically, all of the issues were DURING installation, so dont fret if you already have it installed

Mine installed fine last night. I mucked about, watched a movie, browsed the store and downloaded the MGS W-Book (fantastic) and buggered around this morning – All is fine.

My biggest concern is memory management, with 256mb for system the ps3 will take a knock with the xmb running….I think the 360 will now kill any game available…cross platform

Why dont they give the option to have 2 firmwares for people-people who want xmb and other that couldn’t care less?.The Xmb is not worth it if the system takes a performance drop affecting gameplay. 😥

Bleh, don’t know if that’ll happen. If it works, it works… the problems seem to lie with installation and initial boot up after the update. If you got past that stage, there doesn’t seem to be any problems.

As i understand it the in game xmb does not additional memory. It cashes to the HDD, hence the reason in game xmb feels slightly slower than “out of game” xmb.

i upgraded, no problems has not affected my gameplay at all, very cool upgrade. Im sure the problem will be fixed soon. As for xbox killing cross platform games IGN seems to think the opposite. Once the problem is corrected im sure all will be good

Well the XMB works in old unpatched games and they cant just “create” new memory for it to run on.

Pretty much proves it doesnt use extra memory

Check out the poll on PS3ZA website, not a single problem so far (only 30 votes so far though).

Also, if you check out the 80-page bitching thread on the officail Sony site, you’ll find that 95% of that are morons just arguing about other crap. Not more than 2 pages of problems really.

Interesting point. Makes sense at first glance. Hopefully we will see a rerun of the past head to heads. Or maybe even some solid benchmarking. But with such an obvious risk, hopefully some software design guys thought of it long before us. The 360 doesn’t seem to have a problem in this regard.

I think since Sony took the update off the server we an say for sure that there is a problem…

We are just not sure how wide spread it is

I’m not saying there’s nothing wrong with 2.4. Who knows, it might be buggy. But for every user that had a problem, there are 10000 users with no problems. For every 100 that has a problem, 50 goes and make a big ruckus on the internet.

Consoles break down every day due to hundreds of different reasons. Cars break down, water pipes bursts etc. With 13 million consoles out there, you’re bound to get a fair amount of failures every seconds of the day. 1000s breaks down every day. And yesterday, hey presto, 1000s broke down again, some of them while installing 2.4. I suppose it’s understandable that blame was put squarely on 2.4. Remember GTA4? What it had some network issues where the game hung while loading it up? Surprisingly, while installing GTA4, there were people who’s BD drive failed due to what ever reason. The headings on the blogs read : “GTA just bricked my BD drive!! Lolz omg”

Again, I’m not saying 2.4 have no bugs and it may be the cause for all this. But we don’t know yet. And I can understand from a precautionary point of view why Sony took it off. If there comes a “fixed” 2.41, don’t be surprised to read how firmware 2.41 also “bricked” 1000s of consoles…

Personally, I think Sony should stop with all these rapid firmware updates and limit them to 1 or 2 a year. It’ll make life much easier for them

What you are saying makes sense, but why does sony only take down 2.40 and not the other firmware updates? I think they would identify if some minor amount of users made a ruckus about nothing. It seems like Sony identified something seriously wrong with this firmware update.

Well like I said, maybe there is something wrong with the retched patch. It seems like this firmware does fundamentally change certain aspects of how the XMB operates. So technically, it might well be the patch that reshuffled the PS3 software the most as opposed to other firmwares. Maybe there is something wrong with it or maybe Sony’s just trying to be careful with this one, just to have another look at it.

I don’t know. What I do know is that once again things are blown out of proportion because a 100 people spammed the PS3 forums to death. If this FW caused 1000000 PS3 to blow up in a puff of smoke I’d take it seriously.

I don’t know about the 360 but every damn time something major happens to the PS3 like GTA, MGS4, DTS-HD FW, Ingame XMB FW there is almost always noise made about how it bricked someone’s system. It happened in the past and it will happen again.

I’ve yet to experience any problems, I’ve friends who’ve yet to experience any problem and problems reported at ps3za are minimal as well.

Got my Firmware minutes after release and it rocks… No problems except my console does so much more than it did two days… So far nobody on the SA forum has had the update even come close to doing anything negative to their consoles….. 🙂
