Some genres are matches made in heaven when paired with certain pop culture franchises. And that’s a sensation that I’m getting with the upcoming Berserk video game. Developed by Omega Force, the studio behind numerous Dynasty Warriors games and spin-offs, the idea of controlling Guts as he swings a massive lump of iron against thousands and thousands of enemies is rather appealing. Especially when I remember the last game I played that was based on that anime. Hrrrnnnnngghhhhh.
I’ve got a special love for these “Musou” games, as they’re absolutely mindless distractions that require very little thinking to get the hang of. It’s partly why I enjoyed Omega Force’s other licensed game, Fist of the North Star even though it was savaged by critics on release. Like I said, I just like these kinds of games for no decent reason whatsoever.
ANYWAY! Here’s the latest trailer for Berserk, which might be slightly not safe for work. There’s some slight tentacle action present, pornographic descriptions about Guts’ sword and enough blood to cover the Christmas carnage when all the Vaalies trek south for the year:
So how does the game work? With a combination of smashes, story and having various other characters to play as, according to the bits I copied and pasted below from the press release:
Kill-Smash Action
The one-against-one thousand Warriors series and the uniquely gruesome battle series Berserk unite. Wield a grand sword bigger than yourself and slice the enemy in two, kill and crush with “Kill-Crush Action” overflowing with power. Experience the overwhelming destructive power of breaking a siege with a single swing.
A Grand and Deep Story
The game starts from the “Golden Age Arc” popular among original fans, up until the end of the “Millennium Falcon Arc” where the protagonist Guts, on his journey for revenge, acquires his invaluable comrades. You’ll be able to relive the grand world of Berserk. Additionally, intense scenes reproduced via the anime movie and 3D models are included, and interactions between the members of the Band of the Hawk not included in the movie are being incorporated. This extensive story is being developed using an immense volume of graphics.
Various Characters
In addition to the story’s protagonist Guts, popular characters from the original work will also appear. These characters, who posses a variety of special skills, will showcase a number of unique actions in battle. Additionally, the major characters will feature the same voice actors as from the anime movie and July 2016-due television anime.
Sounds like mindless Japanese mayhem. Just the way I like it.
