Xbox One and the NFL (that’s American football, for those who don’t know) have a close relationship. I suppose it makes sense, then, that Xbox would launch their first TV spot during kickoff weekend in the States, and highlight the TV watching that Xbox One provides.

Here is the ad:

For those who can’t or won’t watch, it essentially shows a bunch of excited people watching American Football. They Skype another excited bunch of people also watching football, and compare fantasy football results. There is a lot of smiling and people looking happy while watching their sports game.

I’ve got to say that I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, it just proves that whole idea of the Xbox One being an entertainment system, not a gaming console. However, just because it can provide enhanced entertainment doesn’t mean that the gaming side of things is bad. We’re just coming off a bunch of good press for Xbox One games, particularly TitanFall – maybe now they feel comfortable to reach back for the rest of their intended audience.

As far as the TV features go, I’ve got to say that they look pretty cool. We may not be able to appreciate them in South Africa, but if they had something similar for Rugby, I’m sure people would use it. How nice would it be to watch your games with your Super Bru alongside it? No, it’s not necessary, but it could add value to the hardcore sports fans.

In the end, I’m sure this will bring in a lot of flaming for Microsoft – gamers don’t like to share their TV, so emphasizing the TV side of Xbox One might not be the best thing for them. That said, plenty of people use their consoles to play movies, watch TV and generally get their entertainment in one place. You don’t have to use these features, just like you don’t have to watch Netflix on your console now; there are still going to be plenty of people who see this as a fantastic added element. Now, if only they would offer this kind of coverage for eSports, they might gain more gamer respect.

Can you connect 2 TVs to the Bone? Having your entertainment stuff next to your game wouldn’t be so bad really.

The whole point of the Kinect is that you can switch with voice commands from NFL to Skype to *snickers* your Kinect sports game. Add another TV and I don’t think it will know what to do.

So the first TV-ad for X1 is about TV, NFL and Skype…………..nice. I’ve accepted that X1 is a multimedia all in one device, but for the first Ad to have not shown ANYTHING about games…….just leaves a sour taste in my mouth

This makes me sad. It’s like the car ads of today. They show you all the Bluetooth features, smiling delinquents driving them, fireworks going off in the background, rooftop football scenes with cars ‘kicking’ the balls, and fail to mention you can drive the fucking thing. Nice one Xbone, Advert1: FAIL.

I think they’re assuming USA gamers will already get the Bone & that they don’t need to advertise it to them, so are pushing the entertainment thing for non-gamers.

I am very much a hard core sports nut!!! Give me rugby, cricket, tennis, golf and most importantly give me Liverpool and I am in my happy place!!!
But would I check my superbru through my BONE, no.. no I won’t… That is why I have a iPad mini and a laptop, they are good at doing those sorts of things…. And my PS3 and Xbox 360 is there for games, I don’t use them for anything else!!! I have other electronics that can surf the web just by typing a bit and then clicking with a mouse… don’t need to scream at anything…

The idea here is convergence of devices. Why take your eyes off the screen when you can have live updates popping up on screen with additional updates from your buddies. It’s a neat feature but not a deal breaker but neither does it warrant the flaming that Zoe assumes will ensue.

You are cwazy! Games consoles only supposed to do games! If you want all that NFL BS you must go get yourself a tablet from APPLE. Tablets don’t do games, and consoles don’t do SNS and Web Browsing. WTF!!!! Just go get a PS4 as advised by Angry Anti-MS Zoe.

I’m always multitasking on my PC (multiple screens) so I’m pretty excited about the X1 being able to do things simultaneously. Any negativity towards this console being able to more than just play games is ridiculous.

Yes you are multitasking on your PC, because that is what the thing was made for!! It is more ridiculous to go and pay $100 more for a thing to replace the things you already have!! I don’t have a next gen gaming console, but I have a laptop and a iPad mini so why would I need the BONE???? The PS4 is going to play games, the laptop will surf the web and the Mini will be an extra… And don’t forget the iPhone 5… Why would I replace them with the BONE?

Because you might just get fatigued having to remember to charge all that crap all the time. Seriously though, I hate having multiple devices all doing different things, all needing to be charged constantly and love the idea of “convergance” of several devices. Anyway, with your constant referral to the BONE I actually wonder why you even bother reading up on the console, it’s clear that you have no interest in what it has to offer and are commenting from an acutely negative point of view.

I bought a 360 first in this gen, but later when the PS3 become cheaper I bought one of those as well…. I will probably own my own BONE as soon as a slim comes out… I have more than enough money to buy both, but you are right MS has made me very negative towards the BONE!! I am a gamer, I don’t need anything more… And with them wanting to limit that really hurt me, and I don’t know how long it will take to get over that!!! But you guys seem to like the more from less rather than more from more. I am not judging I’m glad they didn’t piss everyone off, but yeah they really pissed me off!!

You guys won’t see half of the cool things that the BONE has to offer…. We are not the target audience for the BONE…. They are going hard for more Americans to buy it, the rest of us are way behind… When is it coming here? We don’t even know! That is how inconsequential we are to them…

THIS LOOKS AWESOME! Fantasy football is huge is the States! So, FIFA integration next for European countries! Pretty sure it won’t be a big issue to convert to suit Ruggabush! Just edit scoring, logos etc. and surely the whole DSTV integration will include Supersport?
