Flamebait Friday Debate: Do we really need more HD remakes?

There may be a lot of great games coming out near the end of the year, but there also quite a few remakes peppering the release schedule as well. Capcom has a HD re-release of the original Devil May Cry trilogy coming out soon, while Konami once again wants players to shout out SSSNNNNAAAAKKKKEEE at the top of their lungs every time they die in the HD remastered version of Metal Gear Solid.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg so far. We’ve still got Final Fantasy X and Halo Anniversary coming up, and its only a matter of time before we see the 3DS and Vita being swarmed with similar ports of beloved games.

But do we really need these games making a return in our lives? We’ve played them already, beaten them and put them away to gather dust, yet the publishers want to trot them out every year, like a freshly animated zombie that’s had some quick plastic surgery.

As much fun as certain games were several years ago, they don’t always hold up so well in today’s market, and that might just sully some of our favourite memories of them. So do we actually need HD remakes to relive our glory days, or are the publishers just cashing in on our childhood nostalgia with these re-releases?
