This week, I read a very interesting article on Gamespot about religion’s place in video games. They mention games like DarkSiders and Dante’s Inferno taking Christian themes and using them in video games and indeed I have seen even more religious themes in games like Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
What really interested me is that they mentioned games like Catherine, where the player/character must find ways to deal with their sins or wrongdoings in ways that we aren’t usually presented with. What about games that aren’t just religiously themed, but actually help people practice religious principles, say… a game that deals with karma and reincarnation, repentance or something else along those lines.
So, does religion have a place in video gaming? Today it’s a hell of an interesting topic, but it’s one that needs to be approached maturely and carefully to be worth discussing, so please play nice.
