For this weeks debate we look at different genres within a genre.
Racing games have always been accessible to people, mostly because everyone can relate to cars as they are a part of every day life. The topic today is not so much if you prefer Gran Turismo or Burnout, so much as it is the question of which type of racer you prefer.
Arcade racers are fast as hell and a lot of fun, but sometimes they feel like they could be spaceships for all you care. Sim racers like GT are neat, precise and give the real feeling of getting behind the wheel of a real sportscar – but can feel dull and boring when compared to the fender bending action seen in games like Burnout.
So which is ultimately more fun and rewarding? Arcade racers or Sim racers?

Without a doubt Burnout, Gran Turismo (and Forza) take themselves to seriously while Burnout is pure unadulterated fun.
If I wanted to race a car I would book into Kyalami and go for a spin, it’s far more exciting than playing it on TV

You could also go climb in your car and then wreck it into traffic until it starts rolling, then aim for busses.
This one is really tough for me personally though, I am a sim racing fan at heart, but don’t deny that arcade racers can be tons of fun, especially games like Burnout.
I think in the end, the truth is that if I could only have one, it would probably be the sim racer. I’m just a gear head that way.

It’s not like I can really go trash my car without consequences though. I just don’t get the excitement from virtual racing where as the real thing is a whole lot of fun.

To really enjoy sim racers, you need to be someone who appreciates the grace of the movements, the flow of the driving lines and that great feeling you get when you get it just right.
It’s weird I know, but it’s just one of those things.

So which side of the fence is Dirt 2 on? Cause I like the mix of realism and arcade that it provides.

March 26, 2010 at 12:32
Another vote arcade racers. They have the fun factor that I can’t seem to find in the driving simulators. Fiddling with ride heights and camber height(??) versus the satisfaction of ruining your rival with a rocket up the tailpipe? It’s a no-brainer for me.
Fred
March 26, 2010 at 12:38
Arcade racers are more fun , sims can become boring and all the tweaking for perfection is just a pain .
So a mix between the two is the best fit . Like Dirt2 and Grid.
Geoff
March 26, 2010 at 12:59
Burnout! I’m only good at crashing in to things. Sim racers are a test of my patience.

Gavin Mannion
March 26, 2010 at 13:23
Let me get this straight, you want us to apologise for you plagiarising his article?
Even after we insisted on posting the link back to his site to try and hopefully justify your cut and paste?
Also seriously… GT5 (Five… one after 4) not fresh anymore..

March 26, 2010 at 13:50
i need to educate you young padaewon to the playstation family ways of life,
gran turismo and final fantasy dont need numbers, there as fresh as the first one that was released, these games were born from the labour of true love from pioneers so whether its gt 10, or ff13, it will always be fresh in the hurts and minds of its fans, just like mario, and zelda,gt 5 is truly ageless. they dont compare to other games!
you guys a are lucky to be in the presence of a true ps fanboy from the ps1 era all you wannabe gamers should be humble and respect your gaming superiors
Gavin Mannion
March 26, 2010 at 14:46
Final Fantasy was originally developed for the NES before being released on multiple platforms (none of them being the PS1) and I hate to break it to you but by the 13th installment many people felt it was no longer fresh 🙂
GT5 may one day be as awesome as Duke Nukem Forever but until that day comes we can’t truly judge it.

dude ff only really became mainstream after ff7, thats where ff got its wings, so i dont give a uchicha’s rats ass about ff1 that no one cared about untill they heard about ff7! i only played ff 6,1,2 after i heard and played ff7.
The reason ff is regarded as a playstation home is that is where, it was first showcased in 3d glory and where it become popular on a massive scale it was on the ps systems not nintendo, ps cd format allowed ff to show mind boggling cutscenes, everything we love about ff games today it was not the cartridge based simple ton games of nintendo!
lans
March 26, 2010 at 14:56
this is why you will never understand loyal ps fans you are just an equal opportunity gamer, you care nothing for the great pioneering days of videogames
Gavin Mannion
March 26, 2010 at 15:00
“you care nothing for the great pioneering days of videogames”
But yet just previously
“so i dont give a uchicha’s rats ass about ff1 that no one cared about untill they heard about ff7”
so you fully support Pioneers once they become mainstream 😆

stop acting like a politician im criticizing your point of you, you can’t expect me to play every good game in existence i was not born rich.
games that i supported from the get go
resident evil
ridge racer
gt 1
crash bandicoot
toshinden
sonic
tekken 1
wipeout
soul calibur
mario the first ones
gta the first ones
grandia etc
baldurs gate
actually i could make a super wall of text but you ridiculing ff 13,gt5 and not understanding why people would still think its fresh worries me. these are genre defining games! and just because your insecure and dont have a gaming girlfriend does not give you the right to act aloof and like an arse, saying ff13 is not fresh, just because you think you’re smart because they’ve been 13 of them. No other RPG has done what ff has done, and love it or hate,it ff13 has revoulutionized the JRPG market, just because ff13 is from japan you guys review it to “Western standards” and give it low reviews and say its tired and old does not mean its write not everyone wants jap games to like bioware’s games and be like fallout, im sick of people expecting ff13 to be a WRPG, the very concept of ff13 is to push boundaries and start from scratch with every installment and you DARE CALL FF13 OLD. MAYBE THE NAME IS FAMILIAR BUT THE GAME IS NOT EFFING OLD! IF U ACTUALLY BOTHERED TO FINISH THE GAME YOU WOULD KNOW HOW AWESOME THE GAME GETS AND OPEN UPS! So show some respect and stop being a spoilt gamer, who wants everything his way!
Gavin Mannion
March 26, 2010 at 15:25
lans, what is fresh about FF13? What has it brought to the gaming table?
Remember I didn’t review the title or decide on a score, if you feel we missed something please do let us know what it is…
Oh and I guess you prefer GT5 over Burnout since you haven’t actually answered the question?

Bayonetta was very Japanese – and dammit I loved that game. Same goes for any Resident Evil game.
I’ve been playing Japanese games since the 80’s. Hell, AkumajÅ Special: Boku Dracula-kun is still obe of my favourite platformers. Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger are my favourite RPGs – and neither are western.
I did no such thing as call FFXIII old. What I called it was boring. Sure, it opened up later – but no ARE PEE GEE should have you wind through linear corridors for 20 hours before it stops holding your hand. A good game and my god, a beautiful one – but not great. Get over your fanboyism, and get to grips with reality.
I actually expect FFXIII vs and Agito to be better games than the main game. I damn well hope so, anyway.
Also, Battle Arena Toshinden is shit. Always has been. Sure, it was a major step for 3d fighters – but it really, really wasn’t good.
lans
March 26, 2010 at 15:49
toshinden was the shit the game was hilarious, that game made me love tekken, toshinden was slow as sin, but the special moves were soooooooooo cool! and the AI was cheap as chips always trying to knock you out of the arena.
i dont know about FFv13,it seems so far away that i dont care i wish square enix could make one game at a time

@Ians – Gt is ageless , infact when one considers yourself a motor retard with cars , and decide to pick up gt4 and go into the garage you find out what crank shafts are what an overtrain is etc etc .
@Gavin Mannion – Acrade racing is fun , Grid was the best for me so far , burnout pardise city for me was lame , car crashes were worse than takedown , kept getting lost etc etc
To the point then – Acrade racing goes hand in hand with beer chips and biltong.
@Nick de Bruyne – while sims go hand in hand with classy redwine , a ferrai bed and a GT4 racing seat!!!
so it all depends , u beer man , or wine?

March 26, 2010 at 16:03
You have no faith, and are not loyal to gt5 or the ps3, your sketicism of a game you claim to love shows, your evil intent…i will not buy this forza you speak off.
It is this faith that enabled gt 4 to sell 2.5 million copies of the game in its first week!
this is a battle you can not win, no matter how much smarter you think you are. you are not a chosen one, not destined or deserved of gt5’s presence your fate is sealed with forza,do not pretend to be acting in the best interests of gt. You pretend that you are impartial, but from my point of you i see you basking in the glory of forza 3 mediocrity, and criticizing fans adorations of gt5, you fail to see the megaton that gt5 is and will be.

I prefer PGR. It shows the perfect balance between sim and arcade. It’s the one reason i bought an xbox. Oh and it can give GT5P a run in the graphics comparisons.
I got an elite license on Burnout and as much as I got that far, I still prefer Forza. There’s nothing better that getting the back to step-out and then regaining control with some fancy steering work.
